day spent on the most perplexing prod bug where I am convinced it’s not reproducible, handoff to Fable and it also doesn’t find a means of reproducing but it did find 3 other possible unrelated bugs I have no point to make just saying I’m at the “what about a solar flair bit-flipping” stage

i think everyone should keep making confident strong claims about consciousness on social media. i’m sure everyone has read the prior art, thought about it a lot, and are contributing something novel to the debate

Met an actual train driver who uses a piece of software I made for safety management for the transport authority and that was neat

"system breached by rogue AI agent" is the new "man killed after police firearm discharged" fucking headline

Started reading my copy of LoTR for the first time in at least 20y so many feelings opening up the first book and seeing the illustrations again I do hope I enjoy it. Very curious to see how it reads now

the people who first got me excited about programming concepts and made me feel like it was something I could pursue turn out to be racist enablers it turns out they were kind of shallow thinkers generally and I've moved beyond

I'm torn between massive appreciation for the positive impact on me personally, and distain ...now its happened again with a book I'm halfway through and loving. I made the mistake of visiting the lead author's personal blog and damn they're a misogynistic wanker ouch

Not just CS - the vocationilisation of undergrad in Australia ("job-ready!", "industry-backed!") weakens the fundamental value of so many programs

Nyle Rodgers@nylerodgers.bsky.social

I think part of the issue here is that most university undergraduate "CS" programs are really programming/SWE training programs with a sprinkling of actual CS

I should have said: computers are really fast when you dont create munted queries

Thomas@thomasmcinnis.com

Used Claude to find a genuine 100x perf improve on a hot path due to JDBC mangling some SQL. It will end up being hundreds of hours of compute saved over a year. I don’t know dick-all about SQL really but I do know computers are really fast

I don't know who needs to hear this, but you can click and drag the subtitles in a youtube video to anywhere in the player. This is particularly useful for a software tutorial where the latest things being typed are at the bottom of the screen covered up by subtitles.

if apple were serious about making money they would make a usb-c to 3.5 audio cable for AirPods Max in matching colours and I would have no choice to buy it how can I short the stock

Wolf Blitzer just presented the Wall Street Journal an award for uncovering Trump's ties to Epstein and reveals Trump doxxed the journalist's home address in his lawsuit causing her to move. Trump is sitting humiliated on stage as Karoline Leavitt comforts him.

one year later... Today I had Opus 5 create a fairly sophisticated new layer in a graph data service and it worked for 40min uninterrupted and I reviewed it in about the same time reducing some request times by 80% in the end to end perf run. My only feedback was some of its comments were excessive

I set it loose to write tests and went for a coffee. Came back and it had 1. Added a clear state function to the module being tested, and 2. eventually gave up and just hard-coded the result it expected as the return value of the methods being tested At least it gave me a laugh for the day

My wife: “eugh… why don’t boys know what their favourite things are? Like what’s your favourite pasta shape? Mines spaghetti obviously but not the super fine stuff” all because I don’t know what my favourite flower is so now we have debated the merits of five different pasta

A Scottish audio company, famous for their turntables, once invented a CPU architecture.

Their internal software kind of sucked. Somehow along the way, the company became convinced that the problem was that all Von Neumann-style computers were WRONG.

My investor told me he doesn't really see the moat in my plan. I explained that's the point. The glacis protects the base of the wall and obscures the ditch entirely. By the time the assault party reaches the counterscarp with fascines, they will be committed and under crossfire from grapeshot

Best thing about setting up a home gym in Covid is how I can superset and hog all the equipment Worst is how dusty it gets

1: You realize AI can do 90% of the work. You’re thrilled! You only have to focus on the last 10%. 💃 2: You realize that last 10% is the hardest, most grueling part of the job. 😰 3: You realize your entire workday is now spent exclusively on the hardest 10% of every project. 🤯 Uh oh... 🫠

One person getting AI to write quality code when they know how to build what they’re building is doable. Consistently getting AI to do that at scale for a whole bunch of people who don’t know how to build what they want? Totally different problem.

Outstanding post start to finish I started programming after chat-gpt launched and see myself in the critique. Coding with no autocomplete or LSP has been a salve. Now learning set notation: the gap between “I can read this” and “I can describe a system” is enormous. Gotta write from memory.

gabby@fullmoon.id

I wrote a new blog post explaining why I think more people should practice "freecoding" (coding as much as possible from memory) haskellforall.com/2026/05/type...

Dying for a good online course for PL (as in study of… not vocational style programming courses) Self study is fine but I really miss the opportunity to talk to others and have the shared experience from uni

I have only moderate hearing loss and back this completely. Being in a range of loss that I can take them out and use AirPods Max with Headphone Accommodations to listen to music is tantalising for what could be

Hazel Weakly@hazelweakly.me

Hearing aids. They fucking suck. They SUCK. So fucking hard. The engineering details required to pump 65-70db volume boost out of a thing the size of an AirPod is ridiculous, but I’m confident that the Apple of its prime days could figure that out

I asked Claude for reading recommendations based on the new domain I find myself working in and it suggested two books I already own (unread) instead of new books to buy so AI is clearly anti-publishing industry this is bullshit

we desperately need a certain demographic to stop listening to podcasts, go pick up a book, do an online uni course on literature, or history, or anything

Michael Schulman@michaelschulman.bsky.social

When I told him about The New Yorker's very human fact-checking process, he crowed that "a lot of that is going to go away." To which I said, NO, AI means we need MORE fact-checking, because AI has flooded the web with bullshit. It certainly can't be trusted to fact-check itself, or anything. /

another day, another example of where reading the damn documentation cover to cover saved me, and Claude Opus did not (Claude proceeded to create a spike of my hypothesis in 5min which would have taken me a day or two... which also saved me)
