Many years ago I was working for a student housing foundation about to redo the area between some of the buildings. Architect: So, the first year we’ll just cover the area with gravel. Me: ? A: Yeah, then we’ll know where to pave all desire paths, and where to plant grass and bushes.

The Swedish authorities have observed an increase in the number of ethnic russians from the Baltic States who claim to be visiting Sweden to 'go fishing', but who do not have any fishing equipment. Instead, these suspicious dual citizens, carry several mobile phones, cash and drones.

I promised a tight election, and the Swedish voters delivered a tight election!

The drastic decline in Swedish gunviolence continues, with 0 dead and 1 wounded across the country in August. And while individual months can fluctuate, there is no doubt we have seen a large drop. 12 month average is at 2.5 and 1.9 respectively, compared to 12m mean of 9.3 & 5.4 in April 2022.

Swedish elections send a message ALWAYS forgotten by intl news organizations. Obsessive focus on party that "wins" or on clickbait nativist/populist parties ignores the fact that in multi-party systems, govts are often made or broken by smaller parties. Ignoring them means you understand nothing.

Well, I promised a tight Swedish election this morning, and I sure wasn't lying! The final results aren't in yet, but it looks like a re-run of the 2018 elections. It seems as if we Swedes are steadfast in our political beliefs ...

In an election this close, the final results won't be ready until Wednesday, when the ballots from the Swedish embassies around the world are in, for Swedes who voted abroad.

For all interested: Sweden has a proportional election system whith a 4 % threshold. For election/polisci-nerds: 310 seats are distributed from 29 multi member constituencies through a modified Sainte-Laguë method, with 39 equalising seats. The threshold can be bypassed with 12 % in a constituency

For defence-nerds: All parties support continued strong support for Ukraine and stronger Swedish armed forces. The Left party currently accepts Swedish membership in NATO, but wants to leave the alliance in the long term, when better defensive cooperations have been formed with our neighbors.

As a cold and wet arctic country, Sweden has mostly been spared from great wildfires. But after a big wildfire in 2014 and then multiple wildfires in 2018, Sweden was forced to seek assistance from our European partners, both planes and firefighters.

European union, in every sense.

In 2020 Sweden procured firefighting planes, and some of these were now sent to aid the French firefighters. “In 2018 the French helped us. It felt good to be able to return that aid now” said Bobby Rose, head of operations of the Swedish firefighting air squadron in France.

There’s a food company in Estonia called Coastal Sweden? I know that the Swedish minority in Estonia was called coastal Swedes, but is there a genuine connection or is it considered to be just a “cool” brand?

However, as the new republic of Latvia also laid claims on Runö, things became complicated. In this era, the great powers of Europe encouraged referenda to end border disputes. This gave the inhabitants of Runö leverage to negotiate continued special rights with the government of Estonia.

In short: the Swedish speaking inhabitants of Runö were so remote from the Russian authorities (no taxation, no military service) that they themselves were convinced that they had some kind of Swedish royal privilege of autonomy respected by the Russian czar.

When Estonia became independent in the end of WW1, the new Estonian authorities knew nothing and didn't care about any autonomy, and the Swedish government didn't want to interfere when the islanders complained to the king of Sweden.

I am not going to take a position on Fedorov, and I will never express a word about how the Ukrainian people freely choose to express themselves, they are fighting for that very right every day. But external analysts need to do better than following gossip and pursuing personal preferences. --

Well, this article made the decision to sack the Ukrainian minister of defence Federov a little more understandable. But I don’t know if it was the right decision.

I have no insight in the affairs of the Ukrainian armed forces, but it might be that strategy (bomb the shit out of Russian logistics and fuel) isn’t on par with tactical needs, i.e. boots on the ground etc, to liberate occupied areas.

If that’s the case, then I can understand the frustration of the Ukrainian C-in-C. From that point of view, what’s the point of destroying Russian logistics if you can’t follow up with liberating occupied territories?
