It's the start of a new culture, built upon the ruins of the old, "Shaka, when the walls fell" style.

Not having gifs means people write things like “hot dog kills guy gif” and “is you taking notes on a criminal conspiracy gif” so basically Bluesky is Darmok and Jelad at Tanagra now.

A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

Wow, I hate it. I absolutely despise the entitled mentality that, "oh, this isn't behind a paywall, so I must just be able to take it and repurpose it without asking." No! No you can't! You need to ask first before lifting 67,000 of my words for your project!

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social not sure if you're aware of this but apparently someone has set up a substack/podcast network that uses AI to read random blog articles and your series on peasant life is one of them: askwhocastsai.substack.com/p/collection...

Elrond tells the long story of the One Ring, from its forging in the Mountain of Fire, to its betrayal of Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Frodo is startled to learn that Elrond himself marched with Gil-Galad in the Last Alliance against Sauron, more than three thousand years ago.

Yeah, unfortunately, the Red Delicious and McIntosh apples my grandfather grew in the family orchard were pretty mealy and bland by comparison to the terrific new varieties. We still ate a LOT of them. And after just polishing off the pesticide spray using our pant legs...

Looking for medieval depictions of enchantresses/witches or other supernatural women written by female authors. I can think of the fairy queen from Lanval (Marie de France), and there may be someone in De Pizan’s City of Ladies, but I’m not sure who else.

Apples are just astonishingly better than when I was a kid and what you'd get at the grocery store were either mushy red delicious or lemon-sour granny smiths.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Hmm, I wonder if I should worry about #IONOS patching the big #PHP bug that everyone's worrying about today? I have my #WordPress blog up there.

DO KEEP IN MIND: if your site is administrated by a hosting company, it is NOT your responsibility to update the PHP installation on the web server. if your site is administrated by *you* (ie, you use the linux console), however, you need to start getting ready to patch NOW.

Tim Ackermann reposted

the patch is not public yet. it will be live in a bit over an hour (2PM UTC), once you have it you need to follow the instructions to update the installation of PHP on your wordpress server. until you are confident the patch is installed YOU ARE NOT SAFE.

if you are running a PHP application - it does not matter what it is - you are vulnerable. if you are running some embedded firmware that uses PHP to serve its web UI - you are vulnerable. full details and a patch at 2 PM UTC sharp tomorrow, you have been advised to prepare to patch immediately

details leaked. this vulnerability is a full unauthenticated unconditional remote code execution exploit against any service running on a PHP version from 5.4 until latest yeah if anything deserves CVSS 11, this is it. this is CATACLYSMICALLY bad.

Okay, so @kathryntewson has discovered a set of linked, commonly controlled websites that are authoritatively giving false information on the difference between "attorney" and "lawyer," and are almost certainly AI generated. I want to talk about why AI gets this wrong.

I swear to god, where the hell does the "lawyer and attorney are different" thing come from? All three major models are regurgitating the claim, but there aren't any sources that really back it up. Even the ones the AI's cite when pushed don't really stand for that proposition.
