I study how bacteria kill plants. Interested across biological scales: molecular 🧬, cellular🦠, organismal 🧫, ecological 🥀🌍, and evolutionary 🧬.
Optimistic pessimist: The world is dark, so how can we slow the decline?
So -- What are Ralstonia and why are they goopy?
Ralstonia are bacterial pathogens of plants. They colonize and clog the water-transporting xylem vessels, causing rapid-onset wilt disease—they can fatally wilt plants within days.
This timelapse by Jonathan Jacobs shows a sped-up time-course.
It was tradition to put a $20 in the physical copy of your PhD thesis for the rare chance someone pulled it off the stacks and read it.
What's the equivalent of writing a research paper and hoping a human reads it instead of only the AIs?
How can AI support researchers in peer review?
Springer Nature and Google DeepMind are partnering to co-design an AI peer review assistant that helps reviewers navigate manuscripts and focus on where their scientific judgement matters most.

“I believe that NSF has lost any semblance of independence and that any policy statement coming out of NSF is directed by the White House, presumably OSTP, in consultation with OMB,” says former NSF Director Neal Lane.

Bureaucracy can be so cruel. It's really frustrating for researcher contracts to expire and the paperwork to hire them for a subsequent position to take more than 3 months to move through the system.
I feel terrible that I did not start this process months earlier.
Okay this one’s gonna be controversial. In our new preprint, we show that the canonical #Klebsiella pneumoniae 🦠 virulence factors and strain lineage are decoupled from infection severity and patient outcomes. This was a surprise to us

BREAKING: Major shakeup in NSF leadership. Brian Stone, who has been performing the duties of NSF director since April 2025, is retiring on Dec. 31. Rebecca Keiser, who has been acting chief of staff, is also retiring, Oct. 31.
Unclear who will replace Stone, since O'Neill's nom hasn't moved.
Example of using Claude for bench science:
We compiled a dataset of 40,000 individual ratings of wilt symptoms on plants (14 daily observations of a big study).
I uploaded the spreadsheet to Claude and asked "This is the raw data for our host range testing. Let me know what you see"
I know that there are potential mistakes by Claude code. But also, graduate students, postdocs, and professors make mistakes too. Some uses of AI can enhance rigor. I'm hoping reviewers will see us as transparent on the small uses of AI in this paper.
It's allowing me as PI to make the narrative more complete. The original first-author on this study graduated with their M.S. and the 2nd author became a co-first author, but she has her main Ph.D. projects to focus on.
I am interested in folks discussing the ethics of how we are using AI here.

My husband has been working full-time for over a year with AI agents to run modeling software at Google, so I will use his advice to apply rigor to mentored AI-executed analysis. I will share the approach, and definitely document rigorously in paper and on a Zenodo drive with the code Claude creates

Claude flagged 3 data entry typos. Of 40,000.
Not all science can have automated data collection (especially science that also is training scientists to do new things), so human error is present in datasets. REALLY AWESOME to have AI help us find such bugs fast.
Anyone have recommendations for a decent, not too expensive, digital microscope for amateur home use to look at things like diatoms, tardigrades, fungi, etc?

Vance: "Some of America's most elite universities bring in foreigners to undercut wages of American residents. There are 9 universities in particular we believe merit an investigation. Those are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburg, UC Davis, Cal Tech, Arizona State, and MIT."
OSTP can adopt slogans and hold as many summits as they like, but that doesn't undo the facts on the ground.
Under this administration, science, institutions, and early career researchers keep losing, with near- and long-term consequences for innovation, health, economy, and national security.

Some random thoughts:
Good science doesn't always need disruptors. Often, it needs load-bearing walls. You can't pivot away from a failed multi-year experiment or "iterate" your way out of a mentee's PhD. Science needs stable foundations, not churn. Don't break the people building on top of it.
A former mentor of mine used to say "we don't often stand on the shoulders of giants, we're usually standing on the shoulders of our colleagues and the ones who came before us who were, like us, pretty normal sized"... or something to that effect.
If you’re a graduate student and interested in fungi please apply, this a great opportunity to experience research in an industry setting

It's 20 years since I was part of the inaugural class in the Georgia Tech Honor's Program. Georgia Tech is a nerd campus, so the founding director, Dr. Nobles, had a vision for an honors program that wasn't focused on grades, metrics, etc.
“A program more about questions than answers."
We all wondered why we were selected. I think mine was my personal essay was steeped in feminism and about proving myself in male-dominated spaces, focused on a co-ed soccer team I joined in high school. A good match for GA Tech which had a 30% to 70% female-to-male ratio.
Current director Dr. Amy D'Unger: "I have come to understand that honors education is not about being the best. It is about bringing out the best in ourselves and in others.”

Ten years ago Tami, Roy, and I released a movie we made of antibiotic resistance evolving in real time. I thought maybe a couple thousand people tops would see it.
I couldn't have imagined it would be seen millions of times, and be taught from middle school through the graduate level worldwide
Why are tax dollars being diverted to support R&D at private industries? Can't those industries attract their own investment? Isn't that the entire point of those private industries? Are investers so fucking greedy that they no longer want to risk their own money on tech, so they have to spend ours?
The implementation phase begins... whereby investigator-initiated research is considered secondary to the whims and political priorities of OSTP and OMB who want to narrow what constitutes science into a limited set of corporate-focused interests while slashing budgets.
