This is interesting, because I'm sure to American viewers it seems charming but I'm not convinced that it does so to the U.S.' (erstwhile) allies. It's kinda got 'we went around to our neighbour's house and pissed on the carpet ... haha that was embarrassing' vibes.

I keep hearing people saying the data shows the cost of living crisis is a myth. A lot of this from the US admittedly where economic growth is stronger. But there is plenty of evidence the economy for most people is bad and has been for a long time now. Here’s some UK data

Obviously I want the utmost damage to Trump in the midterms, for Congress to constrain him & for a Democrat president in a couple years time. But honestly something broke in my relationship w America when Trump won the second time. I can't imagine feeling excited for an American president again.

Makes me wonder what the point of it is. The marginal cost of the oil to Putin is high [esp when fuel panics can become self-fulfilling]. Yet the benefit via US fuel prices is low to non existent.

The odds of there being a President Ossoff at some point feel quite high...

In the simplest and most reductive way, the Uk political class seems to have resolved to pay 4% of gdp a year to investors to avoid raising taxes by 2% if gdp a year. It sounds mental when you put it like that but that’s actually the situation.

Given that our standard of governance seems to be on the up, and France's looks on the way down it'll be interesting to see how the yields of UK gilts compare to those of France's over the medium term. (Ours are currently about 5.4% against France's 4.7%).

going to be amusingly ironic if the one thing that ends up saving UK government finances is international distrust of the French

as a satire on so-called late stage capitalism how could one beat investors pouring a trillion into a company offering to wipe out humankind

iv) You could make a strong case that a proportional tax would in fact be a very large Southern subsidy of the North (in that Southen tax would be funding Northern consumption). v) Higher incomes in London & the South are substantially offset by higher housing costs, and costs-of-living.

vi) I suspect a PPT COULD provide an effective wealth tax but you'd probably need to make it at least partially income tax deductible to stop it becoming essentially a second income tax for some folks.

While you can certainly make the case that a proportional property tax is fair, it feels like there's quite a lot of debate to be had there. Some counter arguments would/could be: i) High house values are an imperfect proxy for wealth (the level of equity is very relevant).

ii) Efforts to control inflation through increasing interest rates are already effectively redistributing income from people with large mortgages to savers/the less indebted. iii) Where mortgages are paid by income, that income will (arguably) have been taxed very progressively.

Just got round to reading this excellent analysis. What strikes me here is that a lot of the solutions being proposed in the UK and elsewhere (social media ban, reduced welfare etc) and the narrative around it all are not only punitive but making this anxiety and depression far worse.

New post: Young people are increasingly unhappy. It's a real phenomenon + nothing to do with "snowflakes". There are lots of standard culprits - social media, school, economy - but none can explain the long-term trend. So what is going on? (£/free trial) samf.substack.com/p/the-agency...

As I understand it, one of the reasons is triple lock is so effective/bad (take your pick) is the way that economic effects can lag (e.g. inflation of 10% this year can cause a wage rise of 10% next year, leading to a pension rise of 10% in both). www.theguardian.com/business/202...

A lot of discussion around on how to beat the far-right Hardly anyone mentions it, but they need to include a plan to win the war in Ukraine

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

Increasingly the shifts in European politics are intertwined with the war in Ukraine. One thing stopping Putin moving towards a ceasefire is the prospect of the far right in power in Europe.

You can actually see the Classic/Spicy divide breaking right down the centre of the Conservative Party, when you ask them about how they feel about Trump. Classic conservatives know he's an economic disaster. Spicy conservatives don't care, as long as he's brutalizing minorities.

I wonder when the public debate will catch up with this chart. (What is this showing is that house prices measure human capital; they are the value of a basically fixed proportion of household income, capitalised at roughly the mortgage rate. It's asset pricing, not supply/demand)

As per yesterday, the case for returning some services to public control is far more political than economic, as they are a huge source of frustration as well as a symbol of failure. Not really much to do with growth. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

b) trying to "take us back to the '70s" quite wearisome, not least because the Thatcher miracle was seen everywhere but in the GDP figures. Quite happy to accept that unions were too powerful and the state didn't need to own a removals company (or a telecoms company) but not that we needed to..

This is not misinformation. That's what I normally cover - something out of context, an opinion quoted as fact, or a deliberate misinterpretation... This is none of those. This is full-on disinformation. Because that is NOT from the Express. It is entirely fake😱 🧵 1/10

Case in point:

Tom Hill@tomhill.bsky.social

I think that part of the issue is that people interpret 'social construct' to mean 'made up nothing' rather than a 'human made taxonomy imposed on natural variation'. For me ADHD is a natural biological quirk that creates frictions (and some benefits) when navigating day to day life.

What if it IS a social construct, a neurological condition rather than a disorder AND the difficulties that it causes are still significant enough to warrant treatment and medication?
