I am not surprised. I think humans are complexโ€”immensely creative yet also incredibly crass when presented w/ opportunities to exploit systems. I won't try to deny it in myselfโ€”I've created and exploited digital systems for my benefit my whole career. It's why I'm a skeptic: AI's a mirror to desire.

Jerome Moore@robotnose.bsky.social

Thank you. I was envisioning some kind of paint-by-numbers horror and am glad to hear that isn't the case. Still, surprised actual artists would make flyers that way.

My fav thing is people saying "wordpress is insecure because of AI hacking, I'm going to use a static site builder" while also running claude directly on their daily driver without even a virtual sandbox and connecting everything though MCP. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Is there a middle ground for weapons that end the competition for good, and then after that the roboscorpions saunter off to the ocean and mend corals?

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

It genuinely does suck and is *bad* that it feels like thereโ€™s almost nowhere to go for people who 1. Want to work on robotics (like drones) and 2. Donโ€™t want to build weapons.

Benjamin Boorowski ๐Ÿ‘ป reposted

Related: Iโ€™m still looking for leads and help on jobs, fellowships, and freelance contracts on drones, GIS, aid, disaster, OSINT, tech ethics, and journalism. I simply will not work for evil people and/or weapons manufacturers, which is also why I havenโ€™t had paying work since Trump 2.0 began.

Drone tech has so many incredible applications for so many industries and if you want to make any sort of living you have to work for an illiterate Nazi pervert dweeb who collects erotic anime figurines.

one thing i noticed at the art crawl this year is a number of fine artists using LLMs in their work. i spoke with one painter who said their neighbor had used mj to "recreate his style." I asked "how does that sit with you?" and he kind of waved over his face and said, "yeah, it's not... this/me"

That being said, I remain unsurprised that even creative people use extractive corporate technology w/o much of a second thought to the meaning behind these tokens. But I'm finding it harder to blame them considering the obfuscation of tokenization. What is *in* a token exactly? What is consumed?

Mostly I think everyone just desires to see more and do more of what they want to do. And this desire for Progress will probably destroy us. I am genuinely at a loss, but I think the best action going forwards is to make art, music, and be offline and in person.

But he also had a lot of very fuzzy understanding of how LLMs work and we talked a bit on that (no, they aren't autonomously deciding to hack the world, etc.). It's making me aware that it's irresponsible to try to yell at people for using AI. It's happening, and w/the most expressive and creative.

But it's interesting to me how unfazed these artists are by it. To artists it IS simply a tool. To programmers and computer graphics producers, it's more of the entire production line. If you are fully tokenized, you are absolutely comprised and should probably start making art in earnest today.

I bought 2 paintings. Went to pick them up later and we talked more about generative art (of which I created a lot of in the early 2000s: processing!) and reactive music. He shared a bit of the story behind the work, getting excited to share some of his history. I felt enriched by this connection.

one of the best things our area does is the sunshine coast art crawl. visit studios, talk about/buy art, get to know all the cool people making things with their hands/hearts. @mariepoulin.com and i decided we're going to start creating a new body of art/music next year so we can join ca. 2028.

ed's really doing fantastic sense-making work in this space. i have honestly been desperate for this type of mindful technology pursuit and it feels born from an acknowledgement of our connection to the "natural" world and each other. thoughtful and inspiring stuff.

New video up! Kind of a follow-on from the last one, because a YouTube comment made me feel bad for the author and I think a lot of people are buying into the mindset that it conveyed. Things wander from there. Cool jackets are mentioned. Next one is a cybersecurity talk. youtu.be/a7gxS7w5gi0

of all the categories of takes, "people used to make skilled art with meaning and no one does this any more" is among the worst. i've been guilty of this take as well; to me it's a sign of rising depression and despondency. it points to a need for desperate environmental change.

Working this wknd, on my "Coding with Notion" workshop. Lot of folks still struggling w/getting started, even w/coding agents. Ran this as a 2-hour off-the-cuff version for the Ambassadors + now I'm making it cohesive for our students. Still out here teaching basics in a post-INT age, I don't care.

I think more and more people are choosing not to consume alcohol after becoming comfortable with the knowledge that alcohol is toxic in any amount and the cause of a great deal of death, widespread disease, and generational abuse.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But whatโ€™s something that youโ€™ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

There's definitely also a sea-change happening in volunteer firefighting in Canada as more departments are moving to paid on call models. I think this will lead to better cared for populations as volunteers will be better trained and better resourced.

The distinction between Cassandra warning about the Trojan horse and Cassandra running a successful Trojan horse distribution business is that the latter probably has some explaining to do.

Finally got around to watching Fargo and Malvo is something else. All-time baddies, man. BBT is sensantional. Had to give 'er another shot after seeing Noah Hawley was involved. Legion sold me.

internet bird@shoebill.moe

What I love the most about Fargo S1, what puts it at the top for me, is how it wrestles with the truth that we live in a world of powerful evil and subtle good. Lorne Malvo- the devil himself!- is an event horizon of human misery. Only a fool would try to stop him. But you have to try, don't'cha?

i mean, I'm pretty damn covered in tattoos. something like 70 hours worth. i'm telling you i would rather die that suffer the torture of healing from a full body tattoo all at once. ๐Ÿ˜‚

It must be very difficult to express how language would be used in the future and convey any sort of actual conversational meaning in the present, so you sort of are forced into "hello, fellow kids" as a writer or find a clever way to otherwise establish meaning in background definition.

A conversation between two teens in 2045 imagined in 2011's Ready Player One. Full sentences, commas to address each other; just exquisite grammar. I can suspend disbelief only so much in sci-fi.

One of the hardest parts of being a volunteer firefighter is when a page hits I switch identities so quickly and rapidly that I often forget my other responsibilities.I often realize I missed a meeting when I get home. Most folks I work with know the deal, but I still feel like I have to grovel.

I grew up in Cincinnati. I don't have any way of explaining it, but it feels like a very Ohioan style of expression to me. Like very noncommittal phrases that sound like "is that right?" or "didn't have the pleasure" where "pleasure" means the opposite. Midwestern dry.

You know, itโ€™s a real skill to present such civility while oozing such contempt

Explaining Notion's billing model (serious). Honestly: two token model changes and a subscription raise in the last three months is pretty wild. A lot my business customers are very annoyed and the solo customers are wondering why they should buy tokens from Notion at all.

Oh shit. Oh fuck.

I have synthesized a bioweapon which, if released, will kill every human on Earth. I have hooked it up to ChatGPT, to be released if and only if ChatGPT's response to "Generate a random digit" is 4.

that plus I think they are very likely looking at your name, email domain(s), etc. to build psychographic profiles and system prompts around. ultimately, i think the goal is to make it feel like an extension of mind, such that ceasing use would feel like some kind of cognitive disorder.

I suppose LLMs are especially likely to plagiarize authors directly back to them because the words and style in authorsโ€™ prompts canโ€™t help but move the LLM close to their work in vector space.

"I don't understand, Claude works fine for this, why is Notion AI not able to do this..." We have such a gaping hole in AI education. Probably bc AI companies keep telling users "it's automation! put in instructions and never think of this again and it's exactly the same for each run everywhere!"

It's not that LLMs aren't useful. It's not that some agentic AI can be useful. It's mostly that 99.9% of people using these tools do not know the difference between a tool-call and a LLM-driven tool-call. Still blows my mind every time someone is confused when agent "ignores [my] instructions."

Accurate, as with most Ed Takes. Kinda reminds me of my dotfiles repo. Helpful if you need to grab a setting, have a "what's this for?" moment, or see what I might be using, but ain't nobody in its history just "installed" it on a new machine but me.

Ed@ed3d.net

I at this point am like 90% convinced that reusable/shareable skills packages are a bad thing for LLM users. The 10% is that it can show you what's possible; the 90% is that people want to be incurious and just slap something in the only person who can effectively guide your tasks is you

Spoken language seems to be downstream of music. We play every day in this way, so to suggest people don't enjoy making music is to believe that humans don't enjoy or benefit from connection. [McGilchrist's The Master and his Emissary]

Shannon Vallor@shannonvallor.bsky.social

I had to read this several times to be sure, because I am still somehow unable to grasp that a human person, living on a planet full of people making music, spoke the words 'It's not really enjoyable to make music'

unfortunately @bsky.app is now not allowing me to unfollow anyone so i have to block to remove people from my feed in practice. i really don't like blocking as a curation method, but the software has been broken for years for me, so what can you do?

initially it was some users in year's past and nos seems to be all. i cannot curate my follows so i have to block.

This is funny. I follow @vgr.bsky.social. I don't want to unfollow him, but I literally can't. And it's just this account I cannot unfollow. Venkatesh seems to have some BlueSky-fu no one, not even @bsky.app support, seems to know about. Support keeps sending me "you have to click unfollow, Ben".

Agreed. Why I also think modern software's/tech-adjacent success will drift towards deeply human connected support. If support is a chatbot, people will simply move towards DIY because the xp is AI in both cases. Want to make good software? Build community and connection first.

Kai ๐ŸŒŸ@kaidav.is

"people" is too large and squishy, it's gonna be different for each segment - consumers? - hobbyists? - prosumers? - small business? - enterprise? some will make bespoke (hobbyists/prosumers, probably), others will buy because SMB and Enterprise aren't buying software they're buying *support*

I think the fallacy here is that pre-musk twitter was "fun". It stopped being fun around 2010 when promoted tweets started. At the point of targeted ads, platforms become capture farms and you start optimizing expression for engagement. More addiction than fun.

David Roberts@volts.wtf

My point is just that the current equilibrium sucks. Neither X nor Bsky is as varied or fun as pre-Musk Twitter. Libs leaving X made X worse but did not make Bsky great. Elite dipshits are still getting dragged right & Bsky doesn't have the juice to counteract it. What to do about it? I don't know!
