October 26-27th, 2010: A dynamic extratropical cyclone produced a wide array of significant weather events in the central & eastern US. 63 twisters and hundreds of damaging wind reports were spawned by a high risk derecho event & tornado outbreak. In the Upper Midwest, a blizzard occurred.

The number of professional meteorologists who have liked this post speaks volumes.

Parents, please check your kids' Halloween candy this year. I just found the announcement to discontinue the NAM and HREF and replace them with the RRFS in this Snickers bar

The writers are just going through the motions at this point.

Typhoon #Champi is still headed toward Taiwan, though looks likely to scrape by to the north. Here's an updated look at the preliminary track verification stats. JTWC (Joint Typhoon Warning Center) is the official forecast shown in red.

Typhoon #Champi is big, like really big. Tropical storm force winds extend an average of 300 miles out from the center. That is roughly the size of Texas. When Irma hit Florida in 2017, its tropical storm force winds extended about 230 miles from the center, and that was a very large hurricane.

( #NWSTucson): Wednesday through Thursday portions of Southern #Arizona are in Slight Risk for severe weather. Expected hazards are strong to severe winds (50-60+ mph), localized flash flooding, and large hail (1-2"+). #AZwx #wx #wxsky

Clear skies, calm winds, and dry air yield ideal radiative cooling conditions, which are also favorable for the urban heat island. My car thermometer measured 5°F warmer on campus than in the farm fields just south of town.

News: Ohio State coach Ryan Day says QB Julian Sayin is out indefinitely, and they’re putting together a plan in case he doesn’t return at all this season. Massive news that could change the college football season.

The sun has risen on #Champi and its now-cleared out eye. As usual hard to stop looking at the low-level clouds swirling around in the eye

2.5-minute Himawari-9 Infrared Window images showed Super Typhoon #Champi as its pinhole eye passed just south of Guam -- producing a peak wind gust of 72 knots at Guam International Airport (PGUM).

Champaign-Urbana: Our first real taste of fall is coming tomorrow owing to a strong cold front now crossing the Mississippi River. Despite some morning sun, considerable cloud cover and scattered showers will limit afternoon highs to the low 50s as northwest winds gust to 30 mph.

Tomorrow will be the first day of the fall semester when I won't wear shorts, sandals, or short sleeves and that I'll wear a jacket. I have the A/C on as I write this because the dewpoint is 70 ahead of the cold front.

That brings us to the dramatic shift seen in ensemble guidance for #Simon over the past day. In the Google DeepMind ensemble, we saw a nearly 180 degree shift in forecast track direction. ↗️ to ↙️ I suspect it is due to track errors shifting the TC position from N to S of steering saddle point.

"Very low confidence forecast for both track and intensity, and interests in west-central Mexico and Baja California Sur should continue to closely monitor the latest updates. Changes to watches and warnings could be required later today based on the latest forecast trends."

Wasn't planning on this since the sample is tiny, but had two requests, so here are the track and intensity verifications for Hurricane CantPronounce. GDMI big winner for track. Mixed bag for intensity, but the physical hurricane models were positive contributors. (Name credit Marty Merzer.)

From the discussion: Rachel is a post-tropical cyclone, but the threat has not diminished. Watches and warnings remain unchanged for MX and S CA; expected impacts remain the same and the remnants of Rachel will produce heavy rain and gusty winds. See products issued by the WPC and local NWS offices.
