Sewer Shark SegaCD quality FMV but every cutscene is a guy in a helmet with a taped-on callsign like "Nighthawk" yelling at you for failing "to get us those emergency Coke Zeros"

How is this bug going to get along with the spider who lives on my living room ceiling and the dead fly on the fly trap on the window

It hasn’t come out. I haven’t seen it. It crawled in the hinge under the screen and it looks like the only place it coulda gonna is into one of the little vent slots

Back in the day, the most successful writer I knew personally who was my age was a friend at school who would bang out specs, got repped, and optioned work for high five figures while we were in our early twenties.

All this is to say, as I work on game projects surrounded by ads for AI tools, I think constantly about how fragile your craft is when you’re dependent on outside help to get anything done.

This bubble is going to go away, and with it, the money propping the technology up will too. Yeah sure, some stuff will stick around to some degree, but if you think you know what things will and what won’t, no you don’t.

It was a tortoise and hare thing between us for a decade plus, but eventually they had to stop the bender method and I figured out how to pace myself and finish work.

everything is coming up Milhouse today

Tears stream down my face as I check the standard questions: Has/is the AI booster… ✅ over the age of 55 ❓actually done work in the last decade ❌ created something actually good

NEW OPPORTUNITY: Short fiction writer? Love the world of Heaven's Vault? ... then come play in the waters. We're looking to commission 20 short stories set in the Nebula for a new anthology. Paid, obvs. Full details and a link to the form on the blog: www.inklestudios.com/2026/10/24/t...

In Stephen King's On Writing, the jacket flap has this excerpt where he talks about how he used to have this enormous writing desk that took up his whole office, but that when he got older and wiser, he replaced it with a smaller desk so his kids could come hang out...

The big lesson he learned is that art exists to support life, and not the other way around. I think the rot the AI bubble is exposing in the manager class is this but for capital.

My notes for myself in old game projects are like "this freak (referring to an interface) helps idiot shop owner NPCs talk to BP_PlayerSmasher"

Next week is Austin Film Festival! Are you going? Lots of game writers track stuff happening. I’ve got a Halloween costume to pack and everything.

lol now google's AI chat search will get tired of you asking it questions after a few steps and will...deliver you a list of google search results instead.

Gettin a little too expensive to let people use the chatbots for free, Alphabet? You already took away models from the free service, was that not enough?

what exactly DOES happen to materials from a major studio that’s closed? where do physical hard drives, documents, etc go? who maintains all this pointless secrecy? if you know or have stories, get in touch: nathan@aftermath.site, nathangrayson.666 (signal), aftermathdotsite@proton.me (proton mail)

If you're a BioWare fan, a developer influenced by its games, or a media person who was impacted by them and want to talk about what the studio's games have meant to you for a Kotaku story, please reach out in a dm here or at kshepard@kotaku.com

I have no answers but if we care about a viable path forward for small/idiosyncratic/manmade games we have to stop wondering what daddy Valve is going to "do" about it

Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg

since California ballots are now out: prop 40 is the billionaire tax, and you should vote yes to stick it to them but both props 41 and 42 are designed to retroactively cancel the billionaire tax because they’re afraid they can’t beat it at the ballot box yes on 40, no on 41 and 42

This design choice is the reason I’m so down. That cut to live action hits like a sledgehammer. It felt like magic in the demo.

The live-action cutscenes in pixel art survival horror game, Tenebris Somnia, are incredible, but the WAY they're used is also genius! On Consoles & PC: store.steampowered.com/app/2121510/... Vid: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wI6... by indie dev Andrés Borghi & producer @airdorfofficial.bsky.social
