Aftermath is almost entirely supported by paid reader subscriptions. If just 2,000 of the 132,000 following this account signed up (for just $5.80 per month on an annual plan), or 2,000 of the 27,500 'free' newsletter recipients, the website would change fundamentally! aftermath.site/landing/

Don’t know why it took me so long when I keep telling everyone to support independent games journalism but — subscribed! And please please support independent games journalism, it’s more important than ever.

maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me

Do we really need to explain to people that it is really, REALLY important to read to young children? Like, you, personally, need to read to your child - your voice, your face, your hand gestures, your lap, your arms, your closeness. What kind of parent doesn't know this in their bones?

I can't stop thinking how wrong the tech bros have understood creativity and creators. Or even just having hobbies. #erliart

When a game studio ships a solid game, it creates TWO valuable products: 1. A solid game. 2. The team that spent years learning how to work together make a game. Because Western studios keep disbanding #2 while development cycles get longer; we will inevitably see less of #1.

Saying it for maybe the 50th time: Do not accuse someone of using AI unless you have ABSOLUTELY AIRTIGHT proof, because if not, you're just adding to the paranoia and causing stress for hard-working artists. And yes, going onto social media and going 'Hrrm, I've no proof, but...' is an accusation.

We recently got accused of using AI for music in our game and, while it's disheartening, it encouraged me to make a thread about making music for games, what it takes, and why it can be heartbreaking to be accused or even suspected of something we detest. 🧵Long thread follows:

You can tell there's a big games industry event on because my entire timeline became like 80% more bitter and depressed. This is on top of the 200% increase of bitterness and depression caused by Dolly Parton passing away.

It also doesn't matter if you work on a game that's critically panned or only sells okay. I assure you, there's someone for whom that is their *favorite* game. An example: I worked on Iron Man 2, the game. It's okay. It was made under deathmarch crunch conditions and the team was harmed.

It's STEAM SUMMER SALE time! Which means I've updated my Steam Curator page with everything I've enjoyed recently. I'll also be picking out the best deals in this thread - bookmark this post! "Game dev is one of those jobs you only do when you really want to. It's not going to make your parents proud, you're unlikely to get rich in an industry that lays off people for making superhits, and its a demanding & confrontative job. Why would you let a machine do the thing you're here to do?"

I spent the last few months talking to over 30 game developers about generative AI. It began as a sort of interview survey but became a pretty comprehensive collection of arguments against the technology altogether. www.gamesradar.com/games/why-so...

If you see stuff about game studios shutting down right now and your first reaction is to go post your thoughts about how they deserved to fail for not making more commercial games, basically just fuck off. That's the only corrective action you can take. Fuck. Right. Off.

You know what we don't talk enough about? Queen & Annie Lennox/David Bowie rehearsing 'Under Pressure' in 1992. So much going on! Everyone's clothes, Bowie with a lit cig throughout, where Annie PROPER GOES FOR IT, George Michael singing along in the background. The amazing vocals. Yes, please!

Hello Sunshine has breached the top 300 Steam wishlists and we still have a while to go. Thanks to everyone who's supported us so far! Let's see how high we can get before release day. Also, if you haven't yet wishlisted our little mystery survival game…? 😬

We made a pretty good coming of age story game but most players won’t even give it a chance because it’s got too much color. We’re not all that different in love, relationships, and generational issues. I promise you can relate to these characters. store.steampowered.com/app/1617220/...
