The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

International students who stay after graduation (OPT) cause large increases in innovation, entrepreneurship, and productivity in the US. I talked with @insidehighered.com about the US Administration's new tax on those students—>

Good read on the economics of service charges in the UK. Interesting how in some ways the are similar to the US but others very different.

Constantly learning about little subtleties of how the restaurant industry works from Dan O'Regan's newsletter. His latest on why UK service charge is optional, even though we all end up paying it anyway, is a great example

The point is, it's hard to make sense of CoreWeave's financing troubles on the hypothesis that everybody else in the space is doing fine.

Who is running "he thinks you can be bought" advertisements in the US with Elon pictures and donation receipts? Bc Dems should be all over that.

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. Something I really love is the way the movie constantly contrasts Nausicaä's emotional, naive, feminine-coded objections with the Hard Men Making Hard Decisions, and then repeatedly shows us that Nausicaä is the only person who has actually done the research to understand the logic of the world.

We don't expect Warsh to announce a future path for overnight interest rate targets. It would be desirable, though, for him to carefully articulate how he thinks about appropriate interest rate targets. He won't, or can't, do that either.

Michael Derby@michaelsderby.bsky.social

In his only appearance ahead of the next FOMC meeting, Fed boss Warsh says nothing on rate outlook: "I don't prejudge meetings...I don't believe in saying now what I might do at the meetings that we have in the balance of this year."

I'll add his reach also tells you just how sui generis he was. You could see references to him or his ideas in mainstream economics papers or heterodox ones, in theoretical academic work or technical papers from central bankers or market strategists. His ideas (and charm) were infectuous to all.

I spent much of what little free time I had during my PhD in the YSI reading group Perry sponsored. Like everything he did, it was deeply intellectual and inspiring. It tells you everything about him that people from all over the world sought out his class & he provided it free.
