Here’s what’s going on. Baby boomers bought houses for cheap and then spent decades showing up to meetings demanding nothing else could be built in their neighborhoods so that their houses would see exponential increases in value, and now they don’t want that value taxed.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Important to note that because of the fucked up way this country funds affordable housing, lower corporate tax rates lead directly to less new affordable housing in every city and every state.
Corporate profits are soaring. Nearly $5 *trillion* this year. Corporate tax revenue is plummeting. Down $70 billion, or 15%. Trump's cuts "have reduced corporate tax revenue even more sharply than analysts projected." Gift: www.nytimes.com/2026/10/17/b...

D3 350PDX candidate forum is up! Incl a question about IE4A :) youtu.be/uvHGFrxTc_Y?...
@whollingsworth.bsky.social and I were both radicalized on housing by living in Santa Cruz. It truly is a nightmare.
I think a lot about this article from @idothethinking.bsky.social about the human costs of the santa cruz housing shortage. things are less extreme in corvallis but it’s a similar situation darrellowens.substack.com/p/santa-cruz...

Tacit alliance of convenience between socialist politicians and productive capital against their mutual enemy, rentier capital, is starting to bear fruit therealdeal.com/new-york/202...
Just finished watching the D3 city club debate replay and damn @pnwpolicyangel.bsky.social killed it! Also as a housing voter I very much appreciated the synthesis of protect tenants 🤝 zoning reform 🤝 social housing, we can have it all baybeeeeee
There’s an Inner Eastside Zoning Project online info session happening tonight from 6-8PM! Would be great if some pro-homes neighbors joined :) .
YOU 🫵 can defeat NIMBYism by speaking up for more neighbors and making clear that the commenters on notorious racist Brian Owendoff’s unhinged substack don’t represent all Portlanders

We are so close to tier 3! If your partner! Your roommates! Your polycule! Your situationship! Haven’t donated yet, now is the time 🤩 secure.actblue.com/donate/angel...
Love how grounded @pnwpolicyangel.bsky.social stays. Don't even live in her district but I donated to them for sheer love of the game. Y'all do the same. Need them to stay on and keep trying to fight the good fight against these fools in and out of officialdom
Did some door knocking today for @pnwpolicyangel.bsky.social’s reelection campaign! It was fun to be able to talk about how great it was to work with her office to pass the Inner Eastside for All Resolution <3
Looking forward to talking to more neighbors to support @portlandneighborswelcome.org housing champions :)

Just wrapped up a canvass for @mitchgreen.bsky.social in the little slice of mixed-use, mixed-income, mixed-politics heaven between NW 21st & 23rd. Here’s to all the @portlandneighborswelcome.org endorsed candidates supporting the right of neighborhoods to evolve in this direction when they need to

A fun quirk of American urban planning is production of 990 page documents where the observable universe is a narrow strip a hundred feet wide. The yellow areas are unmeasurable and unknowable, we can only infer their existence through the forces they exert elsewhere. berkeleyca.gov/sites/defaul...
We need to stop locking up revenue for specific obligations. It’s just bad governance!
Pretty strong editorial from @oregonianopinion.bsky.social to kick off endorsement season: "Reject this new unfunded, unaccountable grant program that siphons money from public services by voting “no” on Measure 26-267." Here's a (🎁) link

In April, I joined my colleagues @councilorgreen.bsky.social and @councilormorillo.bsky.social and advocates from @portlandneighborswelcome.org to successfully lead the unanimous passage of the Inner Eastside for All resolution. Community outreach is now ramping up and you can weigh in at the link!
📣 Portland's Inner Eastside Issues & Priorities Survey is now live! BPS wants to hear from anyone who lives, works, or spends time in the area. Make sure your voice gets heard!
I highly recommend reading Jamey’s responses to our questionnaire, which are linked on our endorsement webpage: portlandneighborswelcome.org/2026-portlan... If there was a word more than “expert” I would use it here
If there was a word better than "honored" to express how I feel about earning earn Portland Neighbors Welcome's endorsement, I would use it here. They're fighting for a Portland that my kids (and all of us!) can actually afford to live in. I am honored to be in that fight with them.

I highly recommend reading through our full voter guide! There’s a lot of good housing policy floating around council these days. Let’s get some sick ass stuff done next term!
We are proud to endorse Jamey Evenstar @jameyevenstar.bsky.social, Councilor Mitch Green @mitchgreen.bsky.social, and Councilor Olivia Clark for election to Portland City Council District 4. You can see our full endorsements here: portlandneighborswelcome.org/2026-portlan...

taking my mind off of my pure love of dense multifamily housing by watching the 1989 hit the wizard, starring fred savage and jenny lewis on VHS with my wife
Councilor Mitch Green @mitchgreen.bsky.social is a steadfast champion for making Portland an affordable, accessible, livable city for the working class.
@pnwpolicyangel.bsky.social is my current city councilor, and she earned my #1 rank 100x over with her championing of the IE4A resolution. That is among many, many other reasons to vote for her.
Since taking office, Councilor Angelita Morillo @pnwpolicyangel.bsky.social has turned our priorities into law. She championed the resolution to speed up and prioritize implementation of Inner Eastside for All, our top policy priority and shepherded it to a unanimous vote on council.

Portland planning staff have begun public engagement for the Inner Eastside Rezoning Project! If you are interested in hearing from project staff and communicating what you would like the future Inner Eastside to look like, there are some great upcoming engagement opportunities:

When the police were giving me the runaround instead of trying to find and cite the woman who HIT ME WITH HER CAR, the last cop I spoke with angrily told me “this is what you get in Portland.” I know that what he meant was “we do not give a shit about the community, we see you as a piggy bank.”
The Portland Police Association is calling on elected leaders to condemn City Councilor Mitch Green and for Green to resign over tweets he made in 2020 and 2021.
Hilariously flattering letter to the editor. Why yes, our effort is indeed sure to succeed! You’re telling me city and business leaders are in favor of increasing the tax base for free?! You are also correct that renters love it ☺️
Letters to the Editor can be submitted to letters@oregonian.com with full name and place of residence.

Declining birthrates are a thing, sure, but the more prominent issue is that our city centers are sterile retirement communities and in order to raise a family you gotta move out to sprawly single family suburbs out of historic school districts
Declining birth rates mean fewer students. And that means more districts grappling with whether to close or merge schools. buff.ly/P1XQr5s

My friend was trapped in her apartment for an entire day because the building has one elevator and it broke down. It was wild. Anyboushback for accessibility though and developers say they’ll never build again. We have an aging population, we are all going to face mobility issues. It’s absurd.
We need elevator reform so urgently - we do not have enough accessible units for disabled people and seniors, especially in places with the transit, amenities, and infrastructure that help people stay independent and connected to their communities!

Let us build an inclusive, tolerate and welcoming city where everyone can afford to live here and call Portland home.
Also, if you live in a part of the country that is not welcoming to you, because you're LGBTQ+ or because you're an immigrant or because you're being denied reproductive health care or for any other reason related to who you are, please consider coming to Portland.
