A lesson from literature I realize most people don't get: Every book is a tree. As you read more and more, you learn to recognize the things that different trees have in common. Their lineages. The families they belong to. The odd little evolutionary quirks they've inherited.

as we and the web age together, the gap between site updates grows more naturally, as does the tolerance for entire years of downtime It’s time for me to finally learn the maintenance habit.

Spending a weekend updating kind of abandoned 2016 wordpress sites that are already broken is an entire mood.

PHP is terrible and also briefly made the good web possible and I think you should treat a potential extinction event for the PHP-driven internet the way you would treat an extinction event for your favourite wild animal.

SE Gyges@segyges.bsky.social

if you aren't a huge nerd this is terrifying and very funny php is trash. insecure by design. we have known this forever. it still runs some very high fraction of the entire internet, including all wordpress sites and for some reason tumblr anyway everyone using it may be pwned

If you’re up to help with a documentary about Antarctica, here’s one from a filmmaker and science communicator with a superb track record. And she’ll send you - or someone you nominate - a postcard from McMurdo Station. (Or a cute 3D-printed tardigrade.)

I’m trying to build the habit of not eating after 6PM. Currently working on convincing myself that feeling like I haven’t eaten in a while is *not* the same as actual hunger. (… which, apparently, is the work that will do most of the weight loss, rather than the time restriction itself)

This is also the time of year every coffee shop makes 'scary' lattes by putting charcoal in them. If you take birth control by mouth, that shit will not work when there's charcoal in your stomach.

USWDS was created and maintained by people who genuinely care about making government websites work as well as possible for as many people as possible. It was an amazing thing to watch on its own. But then to see the adoption and contribution by teams all over the world - that was incredible.

Well they finally did it. DOGE got rid of my friend Anne, the only remaining person at the web design system for the entire US government. The replacement appears to be AI-generated code with no dedicated human oversight.

if marooned on a desert island, I’d like to have The Queen's Island Victoria Male Voice Choir, which consisted mostly of shipbuilders alternatively, if the island is nice and comfy and affords pleasant relief from existential dread: Underworld

what is your one desert island band? mine is Mastodon. seen them live four times, going for my fifth later this month

OK, let's do some pop music trivia: The Pet Shop Boys recorded a cover of a song by the New York band My Robot Friend, and released it on someone else's album ("Rudebox" by Robbie Williams) The song is called "We're The Pet Shop Boys"

Drummer Steve Gadd recorded Steely Dan's 'Aja' in a single take, but had no memory of playing it due to intense work and cocaine use. When played the finished track, he famously asked, 'Wow, who is playing drums?' and upon realizing it was him, exclaimed, 'I'm a motherfucker!' (from vinylcast.eu)

This administration takes pride in demanding change from institutions while staunchly refusing to understand what made those institutions valuable in the first place. They’re Chesterton’s Bulldozer.

Possibly the most productive musical accident ever: 90 seconds into Marty Robbins's "Don't Worry" (1961) the guitar solo blew the fuse on the preamp, resulting in an amazingly distorted sound. Robbins demanded to recreate the "fuzz" live, so engineer Glenn Snoddy invented the guitar pedal.

Casino Royale (2006), the twenty-first James Bond film, acts as a kind of reboot of the franchise and breaks a bunch of series traditions. Right after the opening credits, it shows something that's never been seen in a Bond film before: rain.

Another productive music accident: for New Order's "Blue Monday" (1982), Gillian Gilbert had to program the melody into a synthesiser as binary data. She accidentally added a rest at the beginning, which is why the melody is a step out of sync with the drums - a big part of why it works so well.

The "Blue Monday" sleeve is a legendary Peter Saville design, die cut with extra holes to resemble a 5 1/4" floppy disc. (See alt text for more.) The sleeve was so expensive to produce that Factory Records lost money on every copy. Unfortunately, it became the best selling 12" single of all time.

Other musicians who've alternated between music and science careers include Queen's guitarist Brian May (put his astrophysics PhD on hold in 1974, finished it in 2007) and Blur's drummer Dave Rowntree (diploma in computer science in 1984, joined Blur in 1989, cowrote papers about graphics in 2005)

James Williamson graduated Cal Poly in 1982, joined AMD as a chip designer. In 1997, he became Sony's VP of Technology Standards; where he helped create Blu-Ray. In 2009 he took early retirement and returned to the job he had for 10 years before college: lead guitarist for Iggy Pop and the Stooges.

I just realized I hadn’t shared this one yet, but I wrote about how the team I’m on restructured its workflows to lean into the code review bottleneck rather than trying to eliminate it when code generation took over, and what that ended up doing: www.honeycomb.io/blog/embraci...

leaving aside the political economy of open-source software, "send a patch" for weird UI behaviour implies i should go off and do user research and personas and scenarios and storyboards and paper prototypes or whatever else and model out what YOUR PRODUCT should do in this or that situation
