Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

Honestly several things are depressing about ai but the two that stand out are the eagerness of people to outsource thought because cognitive effort is uncomfortable, and the casualness with which people use the shiny, easy thing knowing it's bad for climate change

“i will *never* just let people enjoy things” that’s right

NEW VIDEO!!! We all know AI art sucks but in this video I explain why. It's not just about farming out creativity to a machine but the spread of consumer logic throughout society. I connect AI to mass production, consumption and alienation via Raymond Williams and Walter Benjamin

I have been meaning to write about this for a month or so now but it breaks my heart. AI has infected every hobby. Everything is noise. It's hurting existing communities and trudging through the slop is exhausting.

we’ve got one factory that makes real things and one factory that makes fake things but they both make real carbon dioxide

imo this amounts to deliberate sabotage of an important public resource

Reading about this today has totally pissed me off. It turns out I don't hate AI enough.

There was a redditor who used 'AI' to reverse engineer Beads firmware, and when he finished, then he asked Emilie for "permission" to release it. She open sourced it hours later.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet

I did a panel the other day where we talked about the cost of compute as being a massively limiting factor, but for lots of AI purchasers that cost is still being masked by VC/investor money so the vulnerabilities are high but hidden wch leads to scepticism

New: I pulled the Character ai bankruptcy documents. They show: - They were spending $14 million/month on compute alone at a time their revenue was around ~$1 million/month - Currently losing $9 million a month - They admitted they enshittified & that it didnt work www.404media.co/character-ai...

“AI” boosters calling themselves “AI critics” or claiming to be critical of the technology seems to be such a common thing No doubt they believe it themselves So many people worried about the tech accept these “AI”promotions unexamined and assume anything more critical is unfounded extremism

"It's already here, what do you mean you think you can refuse?" is just another variation of the agency-stealing inevitability narrative. The future is not yet written, and we can shape it, starting with rejecting inevitability and claiming our agency. /fin

ultimately if your reaction to someone saying "I think this is bad, I am ethically unhappy about it, I don't want to touch it" is to go "well it's useful so. it's everywhere. nothing to be done" I just kind of think you're an asshole

Turns out the friction of having to learn photoshop was a crucial firewall protecting society from the terrible taste of small business owners

When I first heard about AI being used for menus and advertisements, my concern was largely that it would be used to idealize the food and make it look better than it actually was. At no point did I imagine that restaurants would willingly put out horrific looking images of their food on purpose

The actual math in this paper is over the heads of non-mathematicians but the core argument is pretty easy to follow: AI theorem-prover formalizations can't actually be trusted to faithfully be the same argument as the natural-language paper they come attached to arxiv.org/abs/2610.081...

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

relatedly: “oh, if i didn’t use ai my project wouldn’t have any illustrations” or “it’s not like i was going to commission an artist anyway.” well then go without. or do what you would have done 5 years ago and copy some clip art from google images

I don't think I've made this point on this platform before it's no coincidence IMO that so much fash faux nostalgia AI slop is indistinguishable from the most gonzo dystopian "what the whole hep world would be doing Saturday night if the Nazis had won the war, this is the sixth Reich" parodies, IE:

So, just to review. In roughly seven months the US has had to abandon all bases in the Middle East, flee from a British base, the petrodollar system that is the foundation for hegemony has collapsed, and we’re facing historical energy and food crises. Great work. www.cnn.com/2026/10/04/p...

The only source of there being any kind of productivity boost in software is from the people who have had their brains fried by the "discovery" you can brute force a bunch of stolen code into compiling. Anyone still in this industry that hasn't been fried sees these people doing overtime for less.

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

These figures are nothing to celebrate, as they show the economy is dependent on a largely debt-driven capital expenditure explosion, meaning that it will inevitably slow. Underneath, AI software and GPU rental sales aren't doing much to grow GDP. www.wheresyoured.at/premium-how-...

Yet more evidence for the towering heap of proof that synthetic users are bullshit. As with all AI products, they do not improve "productivity" for a task but create an excuse not to do the task. In this case, the task is research. AI participants do not help you do research, but to AVOID research.

Ariel Edwards-Levy@aedwardslevy.bsky.social

There is a lot of "oh dear" to go around in the results of this very thorough Pew study on the issues with synthetic samples, but this strikes me as particularly "oh dear" www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...

i know chris knows this but a lot of these tasks are symptoms of structural issues (often exclusive to the us). i get the individual calculus in using ai to address these but imo you’re just papering over societal problems with a technology that is just creating yet more problems

Chris Hayes@chrislhayes.bsky.social

There are so many tasks in managing a household that are annoying and a time suck and not fulfilling or interesting in any way and not really outsource-able in any way that would be great to offload. Please, yes, figure out what I actually owe my dentist and pay it, thank you.

case in point. obv this kind of bureaucratic abuse isn’t specifically intended to drive ai adoption but it’s a nice synergistic effect

James Medlock@jdcmedlock.bsky.social

Yea, Meta is the last company in the world I'd trust with this, but at a time when the GOP is weaponizing administrative burdens to kick poor people off healthcare, having a computer that can help you navigate a hostile bureaucracy could be a big deal for a lot of people.
