These are VERY rough estimates, but here's life expectancy after diagnosis of type-I diabetes over the past 150 years. It was Banting and Best's discovery of how to isolate insulin in 1921 — not some fucking cooking class — that gave people including my daughter a new lease on life.

I’m sorry about the ignorant comment that led to you posting it, but what a great graph. 💙 I’ve lived through a lot of those advancements (dxd as a child in 1983.) I hope US science can recover after the current terrible time and we keep making rapid progress. Wishing all the best to your daughter.

Fundamental confusion between Type I and Type II going on here, it’s the latter that’s (to some extent) related to lifestyle (and has been increasing parallel with increasing obesity). Type I absolutely requires insulin and Type I diabetics will die without it.

Not the head of food services? Not teaching home-ec? My type-1, 73 yr old husband learned to cook defensively, but his first doctor told him he’d be lucky to make it to age 40. New insulin formulations and cgms have completely changed the landscape for t-1 patients.

No, it's much worse than that. I just saw the interview and the précis of the report he's defending. He knows perfectly well. He is just happy to throw away his medical credibility to lend support to RFK's "wellness" program. Which, by the way, smells a lot like eugenics to me.

My mother had a brother and sister diagnosed in the late 1930s. One died at 12, the other at 14. When my nephew was diagnosed in the late '90s, Mom fully expected he would die within the year. He's 33 now. It's a recessive gene, and type 1 diabetics can have kids now.

I’m the child of a Type 1 diabetic who was born in 1955. My mom talks about having been discouraged from having kids because she was the 1st gen of T1 diabetics that lived long enough for that option and OBs didn’t know how to safely help them navigate pregnancy.

People are already dying under the Trump Regime, but the deaths aren't being reported in the media. Sorry. Cause of death 'Political Stupidity & Governmental Corruption'. Bankruptcies will also go through the roof. Families on the poverty line will dramatically increase.

Gee, I wonder if there might be other reasons why the US spends more on healthcare than other wealthy countries. Could it possibly be related to the fact that insurance companies need to turn a profit in the US, and not in any comparable country?

Yes, we'll make the children ruined by "industrialization" "healthy" by taking away their "sick care" so they can work in a factory &/or die in a war, as is their duty as citizens! But the farmers who vote for us will be rich because of tariffs that we will bail them out of! But it's great no vaxx!

The American healthcare system thrives when disease is prevented, not just managed. Like RFK's solution for managing Measles, with drugs and therapeutics, rather than preventing it with a vaccine. Rank hypocrisy.

I do have to admit, though, that Type 1 diabetes wasn't a chronic childhood disease in the 19th and early 20th century. That's because most of the victims died within a year or two.

When they said they planned to eliminate chronic diseases in children they meant they would just let them die before the diseases became chronic. 🙄

Steel Magnolias came out in 1989 and a huge plot point was that it was dangerous for Julia Roberts’ character to be pregnant because she was diabetic. Like… we’ve come a long fucking way and it’s maddening that we’re going backwards.

What an inspiring success story! To what extent does that curve represent improvements to technology/praxis vs expanding access to the state of the art? In other words, is the jump in the sixties is due to Medicare? Or gluccose meters?

Medicare wasn't passed until 1965, and by then treatments had advanced enough to include longer term insulins (NPH 1950 and Lente 1955) which spread through the treatment pipeline. So probably a lot more tech/praxis than medicare, altho that didn't hurt. usable blood testing came in the 1980s.

And not only did Banting assign the patent for insulin to the public realm, he also later discovered that the Hudson's Bay Company was inadvertently spreading influenza amongst First Nations communities via one of its transport boats (they threatened to sue him of course; he won in the end).

A few years later, while her parents were getting divorced, her health insurance was in limbo because her dad didn't follow through to put her on his policy. She started just eyeballing because she couldn't afford test strips, and ended up in the hospital multiple times.

This advice would have left my nephew with irreversible tissue damage and condemned him to premature death. I am more qualified to be FDA commissioner (as a lay person who respects established science) than Marty Fucking Makary.

I know this may be hard to believe, but you can be anti-Trump AND grossly ableist. People on the left demonstrate that ALL THE TIME. So maybe if dude wants to be ~sarcastic~ he can do something other than simply repeating ableist bullshit verbatim.

That’s not hard to believe at all lol. I still think they should’ve indicated it was sarcasm, I just think it’s generally more productive to at least give people a chance to see how/where communication may have broken down when there’s a plausible explanation before I assume they’re just awful. And

That would be bad enough, but you don't usually take insulin for Type 2. My guess is this idiot doesn't know the difference, which means we're living in the worst-case scenario: well-informed psychopaths employing well-meaning morons.

Do you really think the idiots who want to treat diabetics with cooking classes instead of insulin actually understand the difference between types of diabetes? Or would care if they did?

One thing I’ve learned in 26 years as a diabetic is that very few people besides diabetics and endocrinologists understand how diabetes works. That includes a shocking number of medical professionals, like the eye doctor who told me to stop eating bread.
