If you just happened to pick this week to start yelling about the importance of academic freedom, I sure hope you did more than watch silently for the past 18 months as the Trump administration assaulted everything from mRNA vaccine research to gender studies to the very idea of having universities.

They didn't stay silent on everything. Quite a few also crawled out from under their professorships of philosophy and of logic to inveigh against trans folk being able to live their lives. But that time in sunshine was a bit much. They had to wait for Cofnas being fired to feel all indignant again.

And what they've suggested to replace it - White Bro studies for some and vocational training to sort out the plumbers from the prisoners in elementary school (exactly the stupid nightmare they made up about the USSR).

Yes. Of course Right Wing propagandists did pick this week to start yelling about it and did remain silent while the T admin assaulted it. Because propagandists are a type of con artist. bsky.app/profile/upin...

The public doesn't understand how these people operate. That's why every book club in the U.S. shd read @mkonnikova.bsky.social 's The Confidence Game, a history of con artists. Also Babiak's Snakes in Suits. And Hoffer's classic The True Believer And @brianklaas.bsky.social 's book

Because if you didn't say a word about DOGE eliminating every federal grant with any element that Grok thought had anything to do with LGBTQ health, climate change, health disparities, and most of all DEI? I don't think you give a shit about academic freedom. I think you're just a racist.

The ball is in your court, Pinker.

A civilian geography professor was fired from West Point for pushing back after department officials barred faculty from teaching that humans contribute to climate change.

When I think of all the amazing scientists that have lost their jobs here in the states because of Trump/Vought/Musk/RFK Jr/the GOP, it makes my blood boil to see the US interfering in a single overseas postdoctoral appointment matter to advance a white supremacist agenda.

Ugh… As soon as I see the Belgian US ambassador in a picture, I know it's no good. looool. He's a total moron and an agent of chaos. Incredibly annoying.

This also makes me wonder what’s happening with Jerry Coyne. Not enough to go peek in on his rancid blog but still. He was once a very good biologist and then he decided that he’d rather complain about “woke” than the 1000x worse threat to science from the right

You seem to be appealing the better angels of his nature I am now confident that there is no such thing, my primary evidence being that Pinker has turned out to be a horrid example of a human being containing no redeeming qualities let alone angels Also, he's still an Epstein list member

On the other hand, some academics actually do stand up for academic principles bsky.app/profile/ptrb...

We have written a statement in support of Ghent Uni's decision to suspend Nathan Cofnas. We resist attempts to frame this as a punishment for "whistleblowing" or censorship of "controversial research". We invite all academics who share our views to sign our letter. forms.gle/qwN8xzEM5C7Q...

Like teaching warfare and omitting the rise of autonomous and swarming systems … Why is this CO2 rising? Frost free days inching earlier in calendars? Hot days become more frequent and happening both earlier and later in the year? Plenty of records, maybe fewer Druids (Whoops still humans) /sarc

There’s really not enough coverage about the fact that they’re still doing it My wife works for an environmental nonprofit. A bunch of their funding survived the first DOGE wave, but as they have made AI crawl through all the back log of PDFs & websites, dozens of programs got cut this year

Same people that have been attacking trans rights, appearing on the Epstein list and demanding Palestinians should be silent about being the victims of a genocide

I am very sure the same people were protecting the rights of students and faculty protesting against universities that invest in companies complicit in genocide in Gaza. I mean they MUST have protected that freedom of speech right? RIGHT?!

I can’t find it right now, but a skeeter went through the first hundred names or so, and found two who had spoken out against the persecution of pro-Palestinian students, and about 20 or so who supported the crackdown.

Likewise, last fall when many academics were fired for saying critical things about Charlie Kirk. One was fired for merely repeating an accurate quotation, from Newsweek, of Charlie Kirk's own words. Where were all the outraged letter-signers then?
