While we’re banning books… Finland is teaching children in school how to recognize fake news and propaganda as part of critical thinking and civic responsibility. Some of this will seem very familiar. Be. Like. Finland.

This is such an important skill for the next generation. Teaching critical thinking and media literacy should be a priority everywhere—it's a powerful tool against misinformation. However, here in the US, it is up to us now. We need to teach this to our kids.

True event in our home, my 10 yrs old and I am discussing this thing, and I say; "look her boy, this is what wikipedia says" The kid looks at his father with dead-pan face and says: "Dad, wikipedia is not an accredited source". I had to find some proper links for him. Proud dad.

For all you who critically comment on this post, how many elementary school children with an assignment will go through the links on a wikipedia page to verify what's written in it. I can tell you. None. So schools learn the kids to use accredited sources, and yes some may be in the wiki page. 😒

This belief about Wikipedia is outdated though. Sources are provided, edits are harder to make, it’s well annotated. It’s more suspect for niche articles that aren’t monitored as closely, but for big topics it’s been shown to be more reliable than trusted encyclopedias.

I get it. I'm glad you have taught your own child some critical thinking skills. I guess I was responding to the usual tiatribe about Wikipedia instead of this very specific instance. Apologies for the tone

But throughout the Wiki blurb are something we call "footnotes" linking to the bottom of Wikipedia are "sources", or pointers, to get the research going. It's actually a good way to begin.

Absolutely, but as I've pointed out a few times, the veracity of the wiki page synopsis is colored by the writer(s) opinions. Therefore the school learn them to check the sources and not automatically accept the wiki page.

When my children were doing critical thinking/news deciphering assignments, Wiki was mentioned as a tool, but never a citation, and it was encouraged to ignore the "blurbs" and separate out the facts, using the citations. I thought it was a great thought-provoking exercise.

Here's a headline for them Fake? Or really fake? (Doesn't accept responsibility for being found guilty in a court of law). Or...blah blah blah blah. Catch your latest propaganda in your local gym or airport. 🚬😎

Dang, it figures the racist trolls would stop by if we dare discuss education. Bigotry, Racism, Misogyny are mind worms. It's a disease here, spread by right-wing media and neocons like Elon. Question everything that doesn't align with your deepest beliefs. MAGA failed the test, they're infected.

We do the same thing in Norway. Countries who are teaching their kids to recognize propaganda aren't run by billionaires spreading propaganda. In the US, they don't even want the kids to learn about slavery. It's the exact opposite of educated countries. Can the US start a GoFundMe for education?

Not only does the GOP fight any additional funding for education, they want to abolish the department of education, they are banning books, they are fighting to remove any education of slavery from K-12 education. We need to change or remove them first.

SAFEGUARDING THE TRUTH The curriculum of students in Finland includes media literacy lessons, aimed at safeguarding a precious resource: THE TRUTH. Soon to be used all over Northen Europe. Even in a few US states? So required with the election of Trump in mind. www.cbsnews.com/video/in-fin...

cbsnews.comIn Finland, classes in recognizing fake news, disinformationBeing able to identify hoaxes, avoid scams, and debunk propaganda is a civic skill required in today's information society. That's why the curriculum of students in Finland includes media literacy les...

A quick & dirty Google search for “information literacy curriculum “ yields a wide variety of results. Also search on the Amer Library Assn website & if you can, state school librarian associations. Here in PA it’s PSLA. I’ve been retired for awhile so I’m a bit unsure of current references.

Oui Michel. Ce que j’enseigne toujours en partie, car en France, pas de discipline dédiée… donc on travaille désinformation, bulles de filtre et algorithmes dès qu’on peut les insérer comme éducation aux médias dans les programmes officiels… et c’est un combat permanent.

My kids' elementary school and junior high have both had classes about disinformation and how to find quality sources. (Blue dot/red state) While a bit of the teaching is dated (how could it not be in today's world?!?) the principles are sound and it's helping them recognize some bad actors.

They taught many tho ha when I was a kid that is not in the modern curriculum. We learned about ethics, debated social ethic situations, role played people different from ourselves, and learned about other countries in the world. They left a lot out, though. But this essential in the modern age.

It's easier to control citizens who were never taught critical thinking skills. This type of thing would literally NEVER happen in this country without a complete reordering and reformation of the country. USA is the most propagandized country in the world, this is literally antithetical to the USA

It’s an important skil. Along with the goal of the lessons the kids also get to begin to read people. It’s an important life skill. I started working on it in college. Babe and the kid hate it that I always know when they’re lying.

Absolutely, we used to do that when I was a child, also my children were taught those skills by me and the educational system. Our system has failed the younger generation, how else could a stupid man like manipulate so many people.

Those children are lucky. America isn't teaching shit about our new society. Fox news & the GOP paints it as everything is normal & great, while other news outlets & democrats paint the darkness that's taking over. Dumbass Americans just use a flashlight to see what they want. eyes don't lie

The "privatization" of schools is a Republican and project 2025 move!! Teach this in public schools!! And start going to school board meetings!! And/or run for an office or a board...

The challenge is that news outlets often mix news of journalistic standards with opinion content. Many news consumers don't make the distinction. I recommend reviewing their research methodology, available on their website. I find it rigorous, akin to the quality found in PEW's research reports.

This is the most important skill we can teach to our children. The speed with which disinformation or misinformation spreads online today requires that we have the ability to distill the truth from multiple sources.

Finland has an exemplary education system: teachers are well trained, well paid, well respected. They are trusted as professionals on par with doctors and lawyers. Students and teachers are not subjected to high stakes standardized testing. We should pay attention.

Teaching children to recognize fake news & propaganda and encourage critical thinking…that’s guaranteed to prevent Trump from buying one’s country. 😏

If we do not change this the tin foil crackpots, and the anti vaxxers aka fake researchers are going to take over our great country with silly stupid feeling ideas instead of make decisions based on facts!

Um, I had more than enough current events assignments that taught it in elementary school, specifically how to identify how articles were written to expose the author’s/paper bias. This was in NYC in the 80’s, and it was an instant F if you used an article from the New York Post.

finnish citizens are probably most brainwashed people on the planet. they got no idea where they live in, they don't understand it, they think propaganda only exist in russia, they can not tell difference between paid "news" and proper news article of fine journalism.

they are brainwashed bubble of no hope of returning back to their senses. "west is the best, russia is bad" "its really just this black and white nothing else to think a bout" "for sure the leaders are not same kind of manipulating abusers brainwashing citizen in finland like elsewhere".

I bet this education boils up to: everything the government says is truth good and real and best for you, what evil terrorist dicktator countries say is from demon, lies, wrong and leads to destruction and immorality.

And for that money gets healthcare, free college tuition, quality public education. Their birth rate is higher too. Can’t think of why…oh it’s because QOL is better. You get what you pay for. Big corporations don’t control their healthcare. And everyone gets a great education.

Americans can't be the same as Finns. The US can't implement Finnish public education, and a big reason is that Americans are wedded to low academic standards, grade inflation, and lax discipline based on faulty notions of equity.

& who said there was a problem? countries that invest in themselves will show enlightenment and intelligence in all fields with less people of all ages being left behind America use to do this as late as 1980 Countries that still do so like NZ Sweden Finland Norway are called socialist

It read as negative. That’s all. Finland will have my son forever, I think. Went to Espoo for a post-doc, then did a second in Jyväskylä. Now said he’ll be living in Oulu and working for Nokia. PhD in applied physics. USA’s loss is Finland’s gain!

At the end of the day the best way to fight disinformation and the slide to authoritarianism is to teach critical thinking skills. Research shows that teaching the arts is the most effective method of learning critical thinking skills because creativity is not rote learning

You get good media only when you support it and recognise it. And the world has changed with social media, so it’s more than time to teach children how to handle fake news and misinformation. Finland spent decades in the Russian shadow, so are ahead of the game.

Same in Ireland. The STATE education system is run by the Catholic Church. Non-Catholics are 'allowed' to sit at the back of the class during prayers. This is the Gvts idea of being inclusive. Blind obedience & acceptance is what's taught. Critical reasoning & analysis is not valued. #irishpol

Some of us are working hard to help students with this - not enough of us, of course.

This is, more or less, what I do for community groups. My students receive academic materials, personal conversations and access to archives. I give seminar-style lectures to them. For community groups, I adapt this to widely accessible resources. I’ve done this with unions and citizen groups.

Amazing. Just as America’s new administration is aiming to defund education. I guess they don’t want that pesky critical thinking getting in the way of president Twitter X programming

Why is the US so far behind in higher education? Because Corporate America & the elites want to "dumb down" the masses so as to keep the wealth in the hands of the oligarchs. DAVOS man. Masters of the universe. Noam Chomsky exposed the hypocrisy 20 years ago so they label him a communist traitor.

That settles it. Moving to Finland, ASAP! ;) I remember Civics class. Is it part of the GOP's "dumbing down" of the electorate that schools no longer teach civics? Curriculums have changed since the 80's.

The only way things in America are going to change is if we collectively agree to stop work and school, don't file taxes or give billionaires money, say fuck you to all the politicians, stop watching the news, take our money out of banks and go back to the barter system. All at once.

This is great for the children of Finland. It’s really too bad USA hasn’t learned a hard lesson that America children need to be taught how to recognize propaganda in their future.

Wow - these are amazing skills to be teaching kids. I WANT this for our U.S. children! (along with free education, universal health care, and an amazing public mass transportation system).

Obviously President-elect Musk hasn’t realised yet because he hasn’t abused domestically elected officials in Finland like he has in UK, Germany, Brazil, Australia, Netherlands. Democracies need to ban Xitter as foreign electoral interference. By all means, he can continue in S. Africa.

That won't work in this country 😭.. we're dumb as fk.. 😂 can't do healthcare it's too hard.. 😞.. we banned books and just ignore things, and say it's to soon, 😂, then just say thoughts and prayers 💞..

And Finland is the happiest country in the world. Everyone should go to Helsinki and learn from the charming and warm Finnish people. It is heaven on earth, and the red squirrels are absolutely adorable there. Education is central and encouraged. Be. Like. Finland.

I received a couple of odd responses about demographics of Finland. In response, Finland has immigration & beautiful diversity like any other wonderful place where people have opportunities. The Finnish people are incredibly humane and care about each other. It's literally palpable being there.

I encourage everyone who is interested in eliminating the desperation that causes crime & having a thriving society to learn from the lessons of Finland. No country is a utopia though Finland is the closest I've seen.

Though the US may not be successful in adopting all the wise and humane Finnish policies, the general ethos of funding education & providing social media literacy are two of the most crucial ways to protect people from voting against their own interests.

Thanks for sharing that delightful detail. It does not surprise me at all, the incredible warmth, joy, and generous hospitality I experienced among the Finnish people shows a glimpse of what a society can be when desperation and fear are extinguished.

They rely on the propaganda to maintain power so of course they don't want to teach this with the urgency we know it deserves. Some schools are already teaching it and there's curriculum materials available-just teach it fellow educators. I think teaching might become a subversive activity again..

Everyone should take a look at the state standards. In most cases, there is probably a standard in the language arts curriculum that deals with creating multi media presentations. Some states may have a separate set of technology standards as well.

When schools tried to teach digital literacy in U.S. they were quickly hand tied with forced standards that focused on the quantity of verifications vs the quality of verifications 1000 outlets say "snow storm" in death valley. Yet you're standing in death valley with clear blue skies. You're wrong
