I expected the cuts would be bad but I'm honestly stunned and sickened seeing how many great journalists the Washington Post just lost. People who nailed huge investigations, documented war zones, exposed horrific crimes, dropped all at once for failures they did not cause.

So many billionaires are about ego, and there has to be somebody with money out there, whether it's performative or genuine, that could start a newspaper just to look like a crazy winner against all these other assholes.

Our media ecosystem needed a major overhaul. And maybe a lot of journalists are waking up realizing if they don't start telling us the cold hard facts our country will be gone too. I'm hoping the good ones create an alliance and start the first free press of our new age.

Bezos needs to sell the damned newspaper. Why he has decided to kill it other than to protect Trump makes no sense.

The Washington Post is rapidly becoming an everyday rag. It USED TO BE a great newspaper with investigative reporting, but no more. I don't doubt that the cast-off journalists can be picked up by other news channels, maybe not newspapers, but news channels.

I have a feeling these firings - cbs too - plus the general outpouring of legitimacy from the large news outlets will inevitably have the opposite effect the ultra rich are hoping Long term they just released them from editorial control, it only takes one voice to inspire change, now they can speak

it'd be cool if a non-right wing billionaire (there *are* some, right) would step up to hire them all with a goal of saving the original intent of the fourth estate I am naive and a dreamer, you see

Billionaires are not poltical; they are power hungry narcissists! As long as they have control, they could careless! They yearn for those things that sometimes we take for granted, love, joy, family and community! Really, look at their miserable lives, raping and torturing children!

THERE ARE NO GOOD BILLIONAIRES OR WE WOULDN’T BE IN THIS NIGHTMARE. I’ve been screaming this for decades. We (progressives/nonMAGAS) have no opposition for FOX either.

If not, then MacKenzie Scott has been running a pretty good simulation of a "good billionaire". I have a relation who since a personal tragedy decades ago has spent all his time doing good things with his wealth. Good people exist everywhere. They may not be the ones you hear the most about.

BUT- and I suspect this is your point- a system that allows for the accumulation of such disproportionate wealth by a few is fundamentally undemocratic and unjust, as power will always flow to wealth, & wealth to power. We need a society where no individual can gain so much power over others.

I’d rather not have media owned by any billionaires. ProPublica is a good model. Also The Guardian. But, this model is contingent on reader support and that has proven to be very difficult in a world with limitless options, most of which seem geared to trick us into clicking on garbage.

Hoping the nyt implodes as well ... especially Mags Habberman CANCEL YOUR WAPO SUBSCRIPTIONS 🗞 CANCEL YOUR NYT SUBSCRIPTIONS 🗞 Please support Independent Media 🙏

I hope that a whole new national newspaper will evolve, owned and supported by journalists and the public to offset the unemployment of all these journalists. I would donate or subscribe. Anyone else thinking the same thing?

This is what happens when we as a society allow billionaires to own media platforms. Journalism isn't centered around loyalty, the second media puts loyalty and profitability over journalism it gives away it's credibility

Greener pastures. You will be welcomed. bsky.app/profile/marc...

If you were a journalist or creative that was laid off by the Washington Post and you want to work for an independent, pro democracy news outlet, Democracy Docket is hiring. bit.ly/45Qaw4K

What can we do for you all? Honestly? I hate to see the Post like this go, but it feels very intentional. Can you move to other companies? Can you get a less slightly less cruel Billionaire like Christy Walton to start WaPo2?

In Hungary journalists started their own newspaper, when one of orban’s cronies took over the old one. Telex. They still bring quality news. They started it with money from their old and new readers. Maybe the WP journalists can start their own newspaper.

It looks like deliberate destruction

Everybody has it backwards. Billionaires aren’t buying up these institutions to make money. They’re buying them to kill them. Same as the oligarchs destroying government and social programs and things like weather forecasting and regulatory bodies. They’re creating a world they control completely

The parasitic financier media will not tolerate actual journalism. They will find it unprofitable in the same way pharma companies find cures unprofitable compared to chronic treatments. Working people need to talk to family, friends, neighbors and coworkers to promote a laborist movement.

All part of the effort to allow the corruption of Trump, Bezos and their billionaire peers to proceed unexposed and unreported. Democracy does indeed die in darkness.

We at the @postguild.bsky.social are raising money for the hundreds of journalists the Post just laid off. This goes to the people who are hurting, not the Post. Or if you'd rather, go subscribe to an independent journalist. Support is hugely appreciated. www.gofundme.com/f/standing-t...

gofundme.comDonate to Washington Post 2026 layoff fund, organized by Rachel SiegelOn Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, The Washington Post laid off hundreds of journalists. We ar… Rachel Siegel needs your support for Washington Post 2026 layoff fund

Post Guild leadership needs to step up here. Everyone not laid off needs to leave, set up a rival site. The post is just a masthead at this point. There is a sizable base that has unsubscribed over the last year that would support this in droves.

Bezos’ intention was clear when he bought it. He degraded it immediately, removed its independence and now is laying off staff in large numbers. Post subscriptions will continue to fall off a cliff but Bezos does not care. He has achieved his goal of using the Post as supplication to Trump.

After the wildfire, the renewal begins. Shoots sprout one by one from the devastation, grow better and sustain life. It's the talent, courage and ideas that define the future.

I worked at the largest daily newspaper in my state right out of high school. Yes, it was forever ago, but watching newspapers die over the years has been painful. This one has been coming for the past few years. Democracy has died.

If we understand the Bezos Post not as a news organization, but as a machine that spits out propaganda intended to insulate its owner from the mercurial wrath of Donald Trump, the evisceration of its capability to function as a news organization makes perfect sense.

What the Post FORGOT to do is take away their pens and paper. Did the Post honestly think that laying them off meant silencing their voices? Without editorial direction and restraint, those journalists have nothing to stop them from blowing the whistle on their former employer...oopski!

I'm guessing the mass layoffs were because they documented war zones, exposed crimes, and nailed huge investigations. The narratives the regime wants isn't about exposing corruption and all, it's about suppression. I hope they get hired by independent media sources that don't bend the knee.

Bezos is more interested in Money, than Facts or Freedom. I suspect he is just as calloused about human lives as Dumper! NYT is 4 ties as popular as WP. Yet... WP: "The impact of the ostentatious slashing of foreign aid by President Donald Trump can be measured in human lives."

But hey, if it cheers you up any… The big dogs making huge salaries and bonuses that handed down shit decisions that killed the paper are still employed. Disgusting.

Remember the promises Bezos made when buying The Post in 2013? “The paper’s duty will remain to its readers and not to the private interests of its owners.”

It’s by design. It’s sad, disgusting and dangerous. Bezos knows that. Still he persists. For all the wrong reasons. And Trump is gonna decimate Amazon for him, too.

Lots of independent media are blossoming right now. I think there will be a lot of organizations eager to get some quality talent. This is what media revolutions look like in American history as far as I’m aware

It’s called oligarchy. You maybe new to it. Putin reigns in his oligarchs, trump is just a fucking idiot that sees the corrupt $ signs. He can’t rein them in. The US is now owned by the billionaires. Your fucked
