Holy shit. This reminds me of the frightening long-overdue mega quake/tsunami which is supposed to hit the Pacific Northwest any minute now. The last one was nearly 300 years ago & involved tectonic plates. The only reason we know about it is through Native American oral histories.

I got there in the end. First I was trying to slow down the timer in my head then I just watched the beginning time and the end to figure it out. Still - pretty damn fast!

Vancouver and Vancouver Island and the Pacific Coast in Canada have no seismic stations. I have read that Canada is dependent upon the US for seismic warnings. And I fervently hope that is not the case.

Yes it would. We are integrated. As I suspected we would be. I hope our alliance can always ensure this sort of cooperation. I'm happy we are still deploying firefighters to US disasters.👍

The mid West and East have more than I expected, perhaps bc of the New Madrid fault? I heard the big quake in the early 1800's knocked books off the shelves in DC

Canada has spots light up, as well as what looks like the western coast of Greenland and Mexico (an area around Mexico City stays lit up and flashes during the entire thing).

It’s related to the type of seismic instrument, not all seismic stations can be used in this type of animation. (So there are more stations in Canada and Mexico than what can be shown here).

This earthquake occurred at a subduction zone boundary where the Pacific plate dives beneath the North American plate. But this was a strike-slip earthquake inside one of the two plates, meaning the two sides of a fault slid laterally past each other rather than one going under the other.

I'm from Chile... I've been in plenty of earthquakes... I'm even old enough to remember the 1960 earthquake (I was six years old), which I believe was felt all over the world, and triggered a huge tsunami.... some places in the world, it's like you're sitting on jelly (geologically speaking 😏)
