for some reason my brain automatically recognises the A button on a switch controller being on the right, so usually i don't have much of an issue. However, when a game gets ported over and doesn't change the traditional button layout to match, i feel it. looking at you, FF7 remake/intergrade ports.

X is on the bottom for playstations. I commonly jump between all three systems and it's not that hard. I'm old. The arthritis has slowed me down but I've still beaten every dark souls game ever made and most of the nightreign cracked out bosses.

Ya think that's bad, the game I play the most has the Sprint and Crouch controls reversed from Every Other Game, literally, and sure you can change the buttons around in settings but when the act of crouching is called Shifting by everyone in the community... It feels wrong. The game? Minecraft

Idk how but I have a real time translation in my brain for different button inputs, even in qte’s I never have to look down at the controller and sometimes the games inputs don’t even match my controller but I still manage somehow

I played injustice with a ps4 controller on steam and all the inputs were xbox, but I never needed to look at the buttons in the qte’s, I think I’ve just spent too much of my time playing games lmao

What really bugs me about Switch controls is how many games use B as Confirm. I've always locked in the thought of "A" is "Accept" and "B" is "Back. But now "B" is "B'Okay" and "A" is "Aight, Imma go Back now"

Nintendo is wrong, Xbox is right. "But the Nintendo controller came first!" "In Japan they read right to left so the buttons make sense actually" I don't want to hear that shit. Nintendo is wrong and you are wrong

Nintendo went first on this, for BOTH button sets. B was on the left, A on the right, in 1985 on the NES. Y left, X right, on the super NES. Microsoft thought it would be fun to switch BOTH. Like wtf? Come up with your own letters then. Why didn't they commit to the bit and put L/R wrong too.

I know this isn't the same, but I've had two Chevys in a row. They switched up the volume and station change controls on the steering wheel. It's been 2 years and I still turn the music down when I want to change channels or switch channels in the middle of a kickass song. Burns me up!!! 🔥

The Xbox controller is derived from this! The original Xbox essentially just added a second analogue stick to the Dreamcast layout, which used a truncated set of face buttons, dropping Z & C from Sega’s previous 6-button controllers.

Yep. The Dreamcast ditched the Saturn 3D controller’s Z & C buttons, and that carried on to XBox since MS helped a lot with the Dreamcast. Not sure *why* Sega dropped the 6-button layout though.

Yup. I use the 8BitDo controller on my PC, and it pops up with XBox controls in games, but it’s printed with the Switch labeling, and to boot in my brain I think of them as the PlayStation controls (e.g., cancel is “Circle”) 😂

I don't even know why they don't just let you set it to your preference either. My game (still in development) does it and I'm a solo dev. I got Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam and I use the DS4 and I have Xbox glyphs forced on because I dare use my DS4 wireless.

Oh yeah, using DS4 gave me no end of grief in the past too. I always appreciate when devs let you manually set which controller you're using instead of trying to automatically detect it.

This lost me the original final boss in Sonic Frontiers 🥲 I had an 8BitDo with Nintendo-style face buttons, but my computer recognised it as an Xbox controller, so A = B & X = Y 🙃

The thing that irritates me is that you use the the A button the most on both consoles (in FPS games) but they’re in different positions. Takes me 30 minutes to reorient when I switch between them, lol…

I swap between Switch and Xbox and my brain is wired for Xbox way more so I'm always pressing the wrong thing on the Switch. Recently got a Retro Fighters Defender for my PS1 and PC and my brain struggles with the D-pad placement and the shapes instead of letters. Neat controller, though!

The order is swapped because of PlayStation devs in the West thinking "cross" meant confirm and circle meant back. Something tells me if cross and circle swapped colours, they wouldn't have made that mistake.

Microsoft copied Sega which is also a Japanese company. The Nintendo layout makes more sense because the button at the right is more accessible, so it should be the "main" one (A button).

Nintendo controllers are just wrong. Everything other controller more or less has standardized button functionality EXCEPT for Nintendo who has no good reason to continue making us suffer.

The only company that does it wrong is Nintendo. If you go from Xbox to Sony, the accept and cancel buttons are in the same spot, Nintendo is the only backwards company. Just another Nintendo thing I guess.
