I don't think we disdain the center-right enough. First, they rode nativist populist tigers to power to get their tax cuts and deregulation; Then, they lost control of their own parties to those tigers; Now, they sit in lucrative jobs as columnists writing about how it's all the left's fault.

Are they "centre right" though? Still feel the likes of Sunak are further over than Gauke/Grieve/Stewart/Warsi, the traditional centre right...they feel truly politically homeless currently, though can't feel sorry for them

Old enough to remember (in May this year) when Wes Sweeting called upon the country to rejoin the EU as part of his leadership bid. Since then, tumbleweed. Can’t even find the coverage on Google any more (apart from Facebook pages) It’s like it’s being airbrushed away. news.sky.com/share/13544904

It’s the very same mistake the finders of AI have made. It’s a short term win win mentality with zero consideration of the chimera they’re ultimately funding. And fuck the consequences. Wasn’t me gov attitude. For which all of humanity pay.

Think of a family. Dad works to feed, clothe, house his wife and two kids. Mum and kids do their bit to do housework, cooking, shopping etc. That’s socialism Dad works. Keeps most of his pay, gambles, drinks, goes out alone. Kids and mum poorly fed/clothed. That’s capitalism Simple eh!

When push comes to shove it’s not about calling for bad things to happen. The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights was written for a reason and anyone who wants to dilute or change any of those human rights should be not be considered central, they are far right enablers.

Lots of the replies here are seriously wide of the mark, determined to make enemies of the very people who would have been the most valuable allies. One could just as easily, eg, blame centre-left remainers' obduracy over Brexit for ruining a potential soft Brexit compromise. None of this is helpful

Your point was that it's dishonest and dim to blame Remainers? Because that didn't seem like it was your point. But if your point was it's dishonest to suggest Remainers were responsible for the disaster of Brexit, which was brought on by conservative racist dickheads, then apologies for missing it.

The latter was not a *centre*-right line ofc. In any event the replies here demonstrate my point. People are keener on cheap, inaccurate tribal mudslinging than they are on the compromise that effects more inclusive and productive outcomes. And all are punishèd.

If you knew he was abhorant and dangerous but were perfectly happy to let Farage drum up the vote for Brexit because you thought it was the surest route to UK-EFTA or whatever dumb shit you convinced yourself would magically happen, I'm just not that interested in hearing from you in public life.

I seem to recall this was part of the reassuring lies peddled by the likes of Hannan in the lead up to the referendum. Once the vote was in, the hard lines were revealed and EFTA became a fantasy lifeboat for remain voices who could feel the argument slipping away.

Always better to hold up Norway as an example than Russia. However I think alot of Remainers screwed up after the result by trying to refight the battle instead of building support for a soft Brexit

It is utterly unfathomable to me that anyone still courts Kwarteng's opinion on economics or politics. Just a complete broken, unserious country that allows that to happen.

Then you’re not centre right. You’re just right wing. The centre right’s problem is it thought its job was to be moderate and ageee with the hard right half way so they keep making concessions until there was no centre left.

I guess the centre right‘s real problem was having erected free market radicalism as an ideology with little credibility after the financial crisis with the votes of mainly older people roughly 2/3 of whom just wanted govt in safe moderate hands, 1/3 of whom just hate foreigners.

Yes, best post here. What is their economic offer to working age people? And social conservatism is of little interest to vast majority of anyone under the age of about 40. So all that's left is culture war bollocks to boomers.

Unpopular opinion: Part of the problem with Oxford PPEists in public life is that none of them ever bothered to study the elective on international relations in the era of the two world wars, or learned the appropriate lesson.

Probably still would. Everyone on the right thinks they are much closer to the centre than they are because they are all on X sniffing each others farts and thinking it's representative of the country.

Never in history has there been an example of a fascisty type being satisfied with getting what they are demanding - they always push for more and more extreme positions. Eternal shame on anyone who could see in plain site what Farage is and who still helped him.

agree but at least in Britain, Labour have also been legitimising nativism for years and are now in a bind because of it (in terms of counterproductive immigration policy and Brexit). As far as I know, left parties in Denmark and in Sweden have also embraced nativism.

All true. In fairness, and having served ministers of varying degrees of integrity, there was another faction to the centre-right that disagreed, but Johnson duly purged it. More than one half-decent ed sec was lost that way. There were the unwise and then the craven.

You're right of course but do add in the left wing boneheads who were all too happy to let Farage make the running on Brexit with not a word about how he and his people are enemies of ordinary Brits because you thought it would open up a golden Lexit

I feel that & those going on about Labour not being pure to their utopian vision damning; the very ppl trying to turn the Tory mess in favour of social justice & fairness. I find those assaults worse sometimes to bear. I just want better health, education, housing, opportunity for ordinary ppl.

I've said for 10 years that I feel like I'm in the Tomorrow Belongs to Me scene in Cabaret where Max explains that the Nazis are just useful thugs who will drive out the communists and allow the centre to hold power then the village fete degenerates into a spontaneous Nazi Youth rally...

Absolutely, he knows exactly where it's all heading. There's a brief cutaway to MC back at the club as they are driving away and he just gives this very knowing look and slight nod - it's a genius bit of editing and it gives me goosebumps each time I see it.

This is such a good post. And, despite 14 years of centre right govt that has obviously resulted in everything being worse, the majority of journalists still fail to offer any analysis or ask any questions that go beyond a basic centre right narrative. "Where is the money coming from?" etc.

The problem we have is that these people were supposed to be the cordon sanitaire on the right. Insert your preferred chocolate teapot/inflatable dartboard/etc. analogy here.

Some of us have been shouting about the center-right and its collaboration with fascists for more than a decade, liberals called us "alarmists" 🫤 S'almost like the alarm needed sounding or something.

Like the centre-right in the UK that first did hardline austerity when interest rates were at rock bottom after the financial crisis, then thought they could do a Brexit referendum and win, and then finally handed power to the most corrupt British PM in modern history.

65 working from age of 10 to & still working today. What I have learned in this time is that the political landscape really hasn't changed much but the labels stuck on it definitely have & every label are media driven. Far Right to Far Left all Labels with very little meaning to the average person.

Tbh I'm not even sure if there is a centre-right party thesedays? Maybe the Lib Dems? Labour have fully embraced being a right wing party along with Tories and Reform. The real truth of the matter is that these Parties have just been bought out by rich people and serve them instead of ideals.

I guess that's my point. The "center right" lost control of their own parties because the populists they allied with realized they didn't need them anymore and seized control.

LibDems are doing "Stop the boats" racism now along with "beware of immigrant barbers". After what they did with austerity I have no problems describing them as right wing too

Economically speaking all parties are at best, centre right. They still embrace the creed of private sector knows best, small government, low taxes (for the wealthy and corporations) trickle down bollocks that gave us the 2008 financial crisis and from which ordinary people have never recovered.

The Islamic Republic began the same way… Centrists/leftists in Iran supported the 1979 revolution by Islamists. These centrists/leftists assumed they would mitigate Islamic extremism and take power of the new democratic republic once the Shah was removed. It didn’t turn that way.

Grieve was still using Parliament to resist Johnson’s Brexit strategy after losing the whip. To treat the One Nation centre-right as accomplices rather than among Faragism’s most consequential Conservative opponents is ahistorical, sectarian nonsense. 2/2

I find this truly contemptible. Philip Hammond, Dominic Grieve and the other victims of Johnson’s 2019 purge put principle before party and, in several cases, knowingly sacrificed their parliamentary careers to resist the populist capture of British conservatism. 1/2

I can see your point but that’s not really what happened. By 2015 UKIP were already a major forcesecond in 120 seats and 4m votes. That pressure had been building for years Camerons referendum was an attempt to deal with the problem, not create one. He just expected the British public to be clever

No end to my disdain for this cowardly stain. David Cameron made a massive mistake that wrecked the UK and then strolled off singing, scot-free - straight back into his profitable protected privilege.

Facebook would've been evil without Nick Clegg's help though. David Cameron put in motion an extremely damaging global impact event in response to a split in his party and voters, and then utterly failed at delivering the campaign and safeguarding the process.

True. I just finished reading Sarah Wynn-Williams' book "Careless People" and from the offset, the author's vision of idealism believing the platform could improve global connectivity and communication was doomed as Zuck never shared the same vision - his was always about money.

Yeah I think this is an overlooked aspect. Cameron utterly failed to present an argument for Remain, assuming it was a foregone conclusion. Then stated he would deliver whatever the result, then he resigned and buggered off leaving the country in the lurch. www.theguardian.com/politics/201...

theguardian.comDavid Cameron: I will stay as PM if I lose EU referendumPrime minister says his authority rests on holding the vote on British membership, not winning it

Horrible individual. He "thought he'd be good" at being PM. He's the reason we're where we are now...and this coward ran away to his pathetic shepherd's hut. A truly detestable man...it's about time he put his hands up, open himself to scrutiny.

I stood in front of the TV that morning as he resigned and literally shouted at it ‘that foolish man doesn’t even understand what he’s done and we’re all going to pay’. Like everyone I am sometimes wrong, but at times like these I wish I was wrong more often.

The sight last week of Cameron talking about prostate cancer screening when he and Osborne butchered 40% out of PHEs budget and effectively destroyed the NHS capacity and capability will be his legacy.

Osborne for me. Too thick to understand the economics of austerity and simply doing what opaquely funded right wing think tanks told him to. And then he drifted into all manner of sinecures for doing their bidding
