The switch from the age of confronting an empty browser search box - which forced you to identify your own desires - to the age of auto-playing content social media platforms has harmed our psyches: discuss.

I can see it might be soothing for an stress-free break from choices. Assuming the algorithm actually serves up what you need. That said, if I accidentally end up in Reels on instagram, with the swiping and the automatic serving up, I panic and quit out of the whole thing. I am a Bluesky girl

Initially I thought, "what's there to argue here?" and then I realized civilization already did this previously, just at a slower pace and with more difficulty due to lack of easy community surveillance. The latchkey kid is one who is in more danger, but who can explore absent forced guidance.

Are you interested in bugs? Well, as long as no one's looking you can go out and catch that firefly and choose what to do with it (for good or ill). Now? "Why did you catch it, it's cruel!" "Why didn't you pose with it!" "Why..." all with a camera and GPS to track you.

Desire and access have always been gated, only now the eye is connected to an eternal database that remembers the sin of curiosity. Which is all to say...desire is possibly not the right thought. Maybe, it's about the ability to resist the inundation of other things that crush curiosity.

The fortitude to engage in curiosity outside social media is really about our ability to chart our own paths regardless of what the greater world finds novel. That social litigation and curiosity should not be tandem partners for a young mind.

Social media that simply serves up Whatever the Algorithim Wants in automatic play-mode is a parasite upon human attention, degrading our own ability to identify what we even actually WANT at any given time: discuss?

Absolutely. How many times have you opened your phone/tablet/computer to do something and got drawn into a social media feed that made you forget what you meant to do in the first place?

I think this is a different problem. You go to an app you don't actually need for whatever it is, you're only going to look at it for a minute, then whoops it's 20 min later & you forgot the original thing. This isn't because you didn't know what you wanted but because the feed was more appealing.

The problem I think Faine is identifying is, like, you want to listen to music, you open up Apple Music, which isn't the wrong app for your goal, and then you're just staring at it going "what *do* I want to listen to?" because you're out of practice at picking what gets played to you.

Part of it is that people often have aspirational preferences that don't always match their revealed preferences. Until recently, resisting the temptation to indulge the latter so one could focus on the former was a sign of virtue and discipline. Now it's "proof" people can't be trusted to choose.

Agreed - and also insulting I severely dislike the banal assumptions on which the rec algos run - life as seen thru marketing focus groups and never accurate

So actually yes, we have studies showing that eg you can clicker train yourself even though you are fully aware of what you're doing. Eating a piece of a favorite candy after completing a task (or a step of it) makes you more likely to do the task in the future even though you know what's going on.

i feel like this too contributes to the erosion of hobbies as well. why discover something that you have a genuine interest in and can build skills in when the algo is designed to placate that as much as possible

The all compassing theme of current affairs is 'removal of agency' not just the web, but any expression of self-agency and free will IMO the main reason the trans community is now targeted, bodily autonomy is the epitome of self-agency Same for the way they try to age-gate the web

the search for pixel peril continues. Also the implicit notion that current historical stretch is anomalously {bad} {mad} seems grotesquely ahistorical. People sent to jail over "satanic reetooal aboos" are still alive! UK still has laws against "subliminal ads" on the books!

well! is it nuts to suggest the architects of this transformation had zero non-animal gratification related searches when looking inward - no desire to learn or grow - besides power and domination, and so unwittingly made these changes that have made the internet a psychotic mirror of its builders

when we are presented with options we limit our thinking to those options more often than if we aren’t told the options and figure them out. That’s the prevailing Titanic sinking theory currently. Once they had more detailed images the truth became known iirc only 1 person had theorized the reality
