there are genuine “the Mongols didn’t actually invade anybody” truthers on this FREE website that’s entertainment no LLM could generate

I guess I can see why you wouldn’t think Russia was waging a brutal colonialist war in Ukraine if you also put scare quotes around the word “colonialist” in reference to the literal Mongols, lol

I’m actually a big fan of Mongol history and find them to be fascinating but like, I’m pretty sure they themselves were very clear on the whole “yup, we’re 100% conquering you guys by the sword and the horse” thing

specialists would have better takes on this but i also got the sense the Mongols being pretty straight-forward about their goals being “acquiring land and resources” without wasting much time on ofty religious/moral justifications was also a key reason they were pretty religiously tolerant

in quite a few ways you’d rather have a conqueror who just wants your stuff and to extract tribute going forward - and who isn’t really interested in the Moral Fabric of Religious And Racial Purity

If you have specialist skills, you count as tribute and will be taken to the capital to be permanently settled there or given to one of the various generals. Also those generals are debating whether killing everyone in particular regions to make more pasture for horses and aheep is a good idea.

as others have pointed out, one can imagine how mad Genghis Khan would be if you tried to claim he was really just doing a little bit of friendly cultural interchange

well, it's (probably? i'm too lazy to check) truethat russia doesn't keep stateless people. can't conscript the stateless, after all. russian & soviet method has always been to strip ppl of identity by russifying them, while still withholding the benefits of being ethnic-russian

As someone who grew up in Russia, having seen both the USSR version with relatives in command positions in the Red Army, as well as Russia of the 90s with entirely different set of relatives going into, the wild world of private businesses, my response to the quoted post goes something like this.

Russia not using phosphorus because they care about people claim is particularly funny. We're talking about Russia that shelled a Nuclear Power Plant in Zaporizhzhia? That Russia. It takes a very dense denialist to be able to take any *decade* of Russian history and argue for moral high ground.

Despite this or any other arguments these people make, the fact that they're doing apologia for a country that has murdered millions of people throughout its history and continues committing war crimes in Ukraine to this very day is really all you need to know about them.

My recollection of what I'd read on their history was essentially that they had no interest in governance, were happy to leave that to whomever was already doing it (and was left alive) so long as the river of wealth flowed to them rather than the previous capital.

It reminded me of the Gothic invaders of the Late Western Empire who would leave as much of the administration standing but placed themselves at the top of the tax collection mechanism. "We want the wealth, however you make that work".

Perhaps on average, but uh... Belgian Congo? (I'm actually really curious about the ground truth on this one, do you know if there's any scholarship on "morally upright" vs "fuck it we're getting rich" colonialism?)

With that in mind, one might even be able to circle back around to that "it's not colonialism" the argument under the premise that there's a dispositive (if purely semantic) distinction to be made between a tributary vassal and a colony.

They say that's one of the reasons the Romans were so successful. Wade in, kill the army, then go "oh you have a thunder guy called Zeus? Yeah, we have him, we call him Jove but whatevs, nice temple BTW, tatty-bye, marching on Gaul now"...and also why it fell apart after adopting monotheism

Byzantium is an interesting study of this too. That era of conquest was pretty different from later empires; that so many ethno/religious nationalists see themselves as liberation projects today proves the fallacy in retrofitting power theories. See also: Viking raiders vs the Raj England became.
