20 years or alternatively whenever they stop selling it to you you couldn't buy a copy of any pokemon game more recent than let's go pickachu/eevee from nintendo even if you wanted to, so they should go free

OG marathon? I'm pretty sure Bungie released the source code for that, as well as giving the Aleph One community rights to distribute the assets alongside their engine

This is reminding me of how bad of a state MCC is in and Halo modders for all the games kind of being left for dead after being served barebones undocumented tools

there’s so many games i wish their source codes were engine public id tech style for the enrichment of all culture. we all deserve to have free access the code and documentation for kingdom hearts 2. to save action games

much of the games industry’s explosive growth was due to open source technology and mods allowing rapid experimentation and a shared language in a creative field but if you’re a corporation you don’t care about that you just see all the league of legends money that blizzard did NOT make

Imagine trying to get games like Fallout 3 or NV working but you didn't have to rely on a cluster of community mods holding it together like digital duct tape, instead you could do it like Quake. Download a source engine and point it at the art files, done.

I do actually think there needs to be a threshold past which something like DOOM becomes part of humanity's cultural heritage and all copyright and trademark disappears. And "x years after the creator is dead" obviously isn't working

I’ve said for ages that there should be some kind of milestone of success / influence that just automatically puts something into the public domain. It would be so cool to see what people could do!

I genuinely believe this. For thousands of years we created art from a shared set of mythologies, stories, characters, because these things OBVIOUSLY belong to all of us, being artifacts of our own culture. But now Pokemon can say "no we own this concept, you can't make art of it"??? Insanity.

huh. i just realized Quake is so nebulous that it basically already is, as long as whatever you make out of its assets isnt called "Quake"... we could build a whole new industry out of this...!!

i remember in the interviews back in the 90s someone (one of the johns?) said something so close to this that for a second i thought you were deliberately referencing it...

iDTech 5 and 6 being open source won't really do you any good unless you have a personal data center to cook your megatextures with

The benefits of an open-source game engine you can't develop games on without specialized equipment are not obvious to me, but then again the most game development I've done was for a 200-level college class in Game Maker.

Respect to the freedoom people making it so Doom mods can run without a copy of Doom but Doom’s code being public domain while it’s assets aren’t is very odd

There's a fair number of games that effectively feel public domain. Everyone is already making Doom games, you have as much chance stopping them as killing the totally not just a spin on Tetris games.
