Pretending the days after Sept. 11, 2001 were some kind of gauzy Hallmark special when we came together as a country is nauseating and ahistorical. The country went completely insane and has not recovered

"chosen by fate and the global oil industry" what a real one. HST absolutely nailing every bit of this. it was clear as day. i couldn't have put it into words anywhere near like that but it was 100% yes, so certain: this will make us erode and undermine ourselves. weakling reactionaries.

Nailed it. I agree. Up to that point, I naively believed the late 90s economic boom was the "peace dividend" after the Cold War. I continue to believe we could have kept it in some form with a rational reaction to what was a massive but containable act of terrorism. Our most powerful preferred war.

Trump has essentially lost WWIII without starting it. We have no allies other than Netanyahu who led Trump into the Iran war which has now morphed into America alone vs the BRICS coalition. When Xi comes to DC it will be to dictate the new world order. Game Xi.

I have always said that 9/11 broke our brains as a nation. It was batshit to live through. It was a lonely time to be able to see the lies as they were being told. The music was pretty bad during that era too.

Countries are not collective minds, though they are treated as such rhetorically. Not everyone went insane. Many individuals in politics and media "went insane" or maybe just fell back on their worst instincts. They did their best to spread the insanity and are still working hard at it.

It was gauzy here in the City for a few months afterward, with ppl looking deeply in each other's eyes, holding their hand, sincerely asking "how r u doing?" and patiently awaiting a reply. People were genuinely nice. It was pretty cool and a contrast to normal rushing & myob baseline here.

A notable exception was Mayor Giuliani who threatened New Yorkers with arrest if they went anywhere near GZ and ordered police to confiscate camera of anyone tryn to take photos. This was the beginning of the fascist reaction which has only gotten worse since then.

The other thing was, so many ppl were still "missing." That held up any feelings of finality for the remainder of the year, at least. There were homemade"MISSING" signs all over downtown. Picture of, usually, a young person having fun in better days, the tower, floor & co they worked, and contact #.

I think it will fall on the Millennials and Gen Z to reinvent the peace and normalcy that we had in the 1990s, even though they never lived it. I don't know why humanity has to destroy the good things they have so others have to recreate it. I know it's because humanity forgets its lessons.

Don’t recall the 90s being all that peaceful. My military based brothers kept the new one through my teen years and i recall most of the 90s being a random series of the US military in conflicts from the Gulf War, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo…

Now if there was an attack in New York City 25% of the country would cheer because they view NYC as filled with violent immigrants led by a Jihadist. Bin Laden’s goal of getting the USA to overextend itself in the ME, depleting itself seems to have been achieved. Trump would call him a winner.

The ongoing legacy of 9/11 is that we got the so-called "Patriot Act", a cynical wish list of the most Un-American and Un-Constitutional bullshit imaginable, that they had ready and waiting for the next available disaster.

they originally pushed "Total Information Awareness" with a freaking eye in a pyramid logo! then they dropped the logo and did it anyway.

A year later, 2/3 of Americans believed Saddam Hussein had something to do it so yeah, it's been twenty-five years of angry drunk uncle

Ward Churchill is a pretty flawed dude, but his essay "Some People Push Back: On The Justice of Roosting Chickens," that was published on 9/12/2001 nails a lot of shit, especially considering the last 25 years, and what's happening in Palestine and Iran today.

He caught A TON of shit for what he wrote at the time, but it took some serious fucking balls to publish that take THE NEXT FUCKING DAY.

prescient. though we've always been in eternal war against some country/enemy for our history. In the history of the U.S since missiles were developed, Jimmy Carter is the only one not to use one.

While he complained about the ravages of age when he killed himself...I honestly believe part of his reasoning for checking out was that he saw all of this coming and wanted absolutely no part of it. He knew. He was done.
