the primary reason no one trusts the pro-ai stance of “tech always replaces jobs, move on to the next job” is because ai is promising to replace jobs people who get laid off typically turn to, for example, uber driving. there’s zero welfare state in the US. what’s there to do?

They genuinely do not understand how labor and capital are related whatsoever. It’s like when a man doesn’t realize the shower doesn’t clean itself because he’s never witnessed it being cleaned. They think everyone just has infinite money, they’re confused why everyone doesn’t own a tech company 🙃

That and the fact that their tech runs out of "data" centers that burn through a city's worth of electricity per day, deplete precious water resources, dump toxins into the ground, make people sick, & demolish property values so people can make memes, fake photos, & porn.

They will KILL US ALL, AND SOON, IF WE DO NOT WIN AGAINST THEM. NOT JUST ELECTORALLY. An entirely new political economy is required and we have months and years, MAYBE, not decades, to implement it fully.

Like, I know that for techbros lack of foresight is a prerequisite, but it really is wild how surprised they are when people push back on their, "in our glorious future you'll all be unemployed and poor; isn't that awesome!?" bullshit.

The problem is that TechBros and all people above a certain wealth level currently totally forget that in a consumer goods based economy somone has to buy things. So if they employ no one anymore, or lower wages even further, they shovel their own graves.

This is why they want to shove the unhoused into their prisons for profit that the taxpayers ultimately end up paying for. First they make it so you can't afford your home, then they charge the state for your prison cell.

I think it’s worth remembering that the TechBros don’t care how many people buy their shit, they only care how much money they get. Income inequality is no problem for them: if 10% of the population has 90% of the money, that suits them fine, if that 10% is buying their shit.

i know what my answer here is if this is the reality that’s coming for us, but capitalists probably won’t be happy about it

I dont think it has any purpose outside capitalism - the industry is like every other tech effort, creating fake value to lure investors, and ultimately creating a bubble to seek bailing out. The products themselves, if they worked, only exist to replace already deeply exploitative labor.

Like, if the apps all did everything the promised, they would just be profit margin flexors - cutting the most vulnerable, least benefitted workers out of the system entirely. Working isnt bad - being worked to death for nothing is bad. Boiling the oceans is bad.

Nope, Capitalists hate UBI. Because all off a sudden they have to pay more and make sure that working conditions are at least bearable. Because people have a choice.

It is also that it is the current version of the tech hype, crypto, NFTs and the metaverse are previous examples. Also if you understand AI, you know GenAI doesn't learn, it copies and better models that do learn have narrow applications. Current models overpromise their potential.

Grew up watching Star Trek. The show instilled in me a sense that technology can be a force for good. But it ALSO instilled in me an instinct that this is only possible when technology is used for the good of everyone. So many people have lost that second part.

Creating more jobs by making a 20 hour work week the new full work week standard - same payday as currently 40 hours - would be a way to go. But can't do, because that would mean less money for in money drowning investors.

When I see the tech bros making yet more money on their little delivery robots (two of which in Chicago have driven right through glass bus stops, breaking them) I think, they seriously needed to take the few bucks DoorDash Grandmas were making after being laid off? They want everything.

There is also a huge difference between AI taking a job and a job being removed due to automation. With Automation they are removing jobs that are tedious and cause harm to workers via repetitive movements. They add jobs in QA and in maintenance that didn't exist before and are less taxing on ppl

Some people did loose jobs when automation become more common, but overall more jobs were created and people's quality of life was improved significantly and some people got a better paying job on top of that. AI does not do any of that and only hurts people and communities. FUCK AI

“AI Won't Cause an Economic Collapse due to Job Shortages“ an op-ed for Politico written by a man who will never suffer any repercussions from an economic collapse due to job shortages

A million percent this. If AI was regulated, made the entire system more efficient, and essentially removed the need for a societal rat race to survive, literally zero people would be against this.

The fundamental issue with AI really boils down to just because you can doesn't mean you should, and I think a lot of people are going to figure this out sooner than later. Ultimately this kills the value proposition being pedaled to us today.
