Petrol and diesel prices are higher than they've been for a long time and people need help now.

This is a fucking atrocious policy. Fuel Duty needs to be higher actually, and all the proceeds invested into broadening the public transport network.

I'm sorry to read this. I was a member (& minor-league activist) of the Lib Dems in the early 2000s, and continued to be a supporter. But I don't think I can vote for a party that wants to cut fuel duty; it's crass populism, and where is the money going to come from to pay for this?

No. If people keep on voting for parties that continue to dip their wick in the hornet’s nest we helped create in the Middle East for fuel they need to suffer the consequences. Remove the freeze on it and build public transport, active travel options, etc. actual investment in infrastructure.

You can absolutely not pay fuel duty: by not driving. But since fuel duty barely covers the infrastructure and health costs imposed by driving, the public purse doesn't lose out when that happens.

Sorry, this puts my vote at risk. Voted Lib Dem most of my life but this policy stinks. Raise fuel duty, subsidise EV’s and public transport with the proceeds.

Ed Davey was a minister in the Con-Dem govt. He traded the lives of people on benefits for a 5p tax on shopping bags. Now party leader he's bragging that he's a king maker and trading the life of everyone on the planet for 10p off petrol. Shit person. Shit party.

Can you also discount the costs of buying ecargobikes, whilst providing adequate funding for cycling infrastructure and public transport, at the same time?

Completely back to front. Raise fuel duty steadily to push people away from combustion cars. Raise taxes to pay for better stuff, including better cycle infra and better public transport. You will be machine gunning migrants next!

Do pipe down, people don't want crummy electric cars. Forcing ICE cars off the road is exactly why the eco-loons will never be elected.

Wildfires, a desperate need for action to switch to EVs, public transport and active travel and you do this?! The only sense this makes is if you think votes from Conservative and Reform is a core part of your strategy. This is idiotic and really really self defeating.

No. Use the tax raised from people wealthy enough to run fossil fuel guzzling vehicles to subsidise public transport. Add nonprofit routes in rural areas. Free transport for the unwaged. So much you can do rather than let the rich keep £5 or £6 when they fill up.

This is an awful policy. I have a Lib Dem MP who says he is passionate about tackling global heating, but then his party's big announcement is that it wants to make fossil fuel-powered transport cheaper! It is bonkers.

This just reinforces the narrative that the Lib Dems have no vision. It does nothing to motivate, nothing to address underlying problems & doesn't improve anything. It's just bland and pointless & it also discriminates against those that predominantly use public transport & bikes. Rubbish idea.

This is a truly terrible policy. The cost is £2bn. For a 3 month cut. For a shade over 3bn according to the Campaign for Better Transport you could provide an hourly bus service from 6am to midnight to every town and village of more than 300 people. Now that would be transformational.

What about people who are using Electric Cars to look after the environment - that cut will make high street Electric recharge much more expensive than buying petrol. You can't be seriously suggesting that?

A modern EV is around 60-70% better for environment, plus they don't need the continuous, irreversible extraction and burning of thousands of tonnes of oil

Dreadful posturing. Anyone not driving a car, well bad luck. And when prices rise a further 20p? What then? Let’s stick with fossil fuels and you’ll keep subsidising it? A stupid, costly policy that achieves nothing and won’t win votes from drivers, but will lose votes to the Greens

Wrong! What needs to be done is to get rid of peak hour train fares. They have already got rid of them in Scotland. It will help more working people take public transport and put money in their pockets. Great for the environment as well. A win-win policy
