How about mandating they look like this or safety orange and you get a fine for painting it other than orange Like they do with kids guns? There are actual legitimate reasons for these to exist

I notice Meta is putting a lot of ads on podcasts where you hear the voices of users gleefully asking "hey, meta, find me a .....restaurant". They are trying hard to make it sound like just using your phone. So...just use your phone, ok?

I've made my arguments elsewhere on these glasses. Zuckerberg hasn't ever cared about people's privacy. I think that was clear at the start up of Facebook. He's always struck me as someone who would ~ more than willingly ~ give any data he has to governments, Data Centers, or who knows?... IMO.

Literally watched a video of a blind person getting these glasses that help her see the objects in her hands... but we are on a 'hate-wagon' by the weirdest losers using it incorrectly. Guess we need to give up driving cars because of drunks & give up on mass transit because of crazy passangers.

Just calling them spy glasses instantly informs of an intent to invade privacy. I notice they now call them "smart" 😂 glasses ... ... but we all know they're pervert and weirdo glasses. I suspect you'll only wear them once because your mates will fall about pissing themselves laughing at you.

"Restaurants, theatres and pubs in the UK, including Wetherspoons, have even joined in on the backlash, banning the Meta glasses over privacy fears."

Incomprehensible that these things were ever considered to be a "good idea" in the first place. Idiots. OF COURSE THEY WILL BE MISUSED!

Or harassers, kidnappers, cops etc People are like "ban them from nightclubs", but they're also trying to make it "about the kids"; I don't think there are kids in nightclubs The truth is that people don't want to be filmed doing creepy shit, or film cops

Almost nobody seem to care about the mass surveillance, it's not the main argument, which is suspicious in itself The post owner has 0 posts about Flock, for instance

These things are privacy disasters and also potentially dangerous when driving. They will cause the deaths of many people as people watch social media while speeding along the roads. We don't have the legislation to deal with this yet.

Meta: “Our glasses have always had an LED light that activates whenever someone captures a photo or video for their gallery.” Meaning what, it’s up to individuals to be vigilant at all times and initiate the confrontation to try to get the video deleted? What a degradation of 3rd spaces and privacy!

The sad thing is the original Google Glass could had some pretty cool uses in the hands of hackers and homebrewers. Of course adding AI only cranks the "Glasshole" stigma up to 11.

Walt Disney and Steve Jobs just made things they liked. Their personal taste was their lodestar. They were certain that what was to their taste would be to consumers' tastes, too. So does Mark Zuckerberg. The difference is that Walt Disney and Steve Jobs were right and Mark Zuckerberg is wrong.

I can see them being useful for people who want to record close up stuff like someone who repairs electronics but has a YouTube channel. Apart from that though… eh…

This is my third post about this. I have two pairs. I'm in my 70s. I used them for language studies. It really helps. I can hear the pronunciations better and the apps can hear my pronunciations and correct them. I like him. Everybody is not a pervert.

I always saw Meta/Google glasses as “You’ll think it’s ‘innovative’ whether you like it or not! 👊😠” (And whatever happened to Google glasses after movie theaters cracked down on piracy?) As for “Social shaming” mob-mentality however…I can show you a few battle scars fighting the good fights. 🤕

I actually wonder if we can’t fight tech with tech on this one. Like what laser frequency can just burn that camera out in an instant? You’d have to use something not on the visible spectrum so you don’t blind anyone and I’m sure this is doable. Could probably be fitted onto a hat brim.

‘Perverts’ or people advocating violence on people with no proof of that? Sounds great. Stick your laser up your **** and see if it helps

Capitalism built on the shoulders of the patriarchy does not protect women and children. Never has. Never will. Who do you think this surveillance tool harms the most? Women and children. Tech specifically designed to protect stalkers, rapists and pedophiles. No matter the influencer spin.

Imagine the amount of fights that will occur due to these. Still, like Tesla, they are not meant to make money. They are merely something tangible, something you can see to justify tech wealth. The real money comes from government contracts. Zuck is not a UFC fan he was at the fight for a reason.

Only a little creep like Zuckerberg would approve the pervert glasses. Bet he wishes he was wearing them here, he’s like a teenage boy catching a glimpse having never seen a pair of tits before

I don't think they are capable of feeling shame. It's obvious to me that their greed wiped out any inkling of humanity they may have once had. The oligarch mentality.

I'm in my 70s and I have two pairs. I like them. I don't really wear them in public. I wear them and I purchased them for language study. I find them very helpful when studying language online. I can hear the pronunciations better and it picks up my pronunciations better. Everyone is not a pervert.

Wife was talking about those glasses the other day. Told her she was only ever to refer to them as pervert glasses.

I have a question. I understand the anger because it makes men perverts, but could it not also make it possible for women to film men harassing them? I am against those things, but we all know: this will not be stopped…

I think most people would like to say they want high freedom until they're forced to think about what freedom even means (particularly freedom for everyone, including people who would harm them). Humans can't handle too much freedom tbh. It's why we gravitate so naturally to cults.

What I want or think does not have any effect on what the markets want. If we ban these devices they will keep on popping up from everywhere… Banning them needs a police state to enforce the ban…

Social shaming, within reasonable limits , is a soft but essential form of informal governance without which all social civility would vanish. Much better then enforcing everything through formal enforcement . Underappreciated

Great-so a little light coming on is all the warning you get that you’re being recorded. So once again it’s “victims need to do better…” Shame these things out of existence please

They could have started recording minutes or seconds before you entered the “scene”, so you wouldn’t have had an opportunity to even catch the little light going on. The glasses should be banned.

There's a saying in Ireland "Lit up like the Kish Lighthouse". If you are recording using these glasses you should be lit up like that, and be making a sound like a truck reversing. But it will only take someone a day to patch the firmware so no noise/lights are made. Just ban the damn things.

Considering Ray-Bans are owned by EssilorLuxottica (which owns 100s of brands, including up and down the vertical supply chain, and dominates the market), not surprising. The conglomerate is big on wearables and AR glasses. If Ray-Bans or Oakleys take a hit, they'll swap it with another brand.

Just gotta meep on calling tgem pervert glasses, and hopefully the stigma will prevent them taking off. But 7 million units sold is a big number already. 😬

it is bound to happen, the awareness was there. The companies ignored all warnings, and then gave them to celebs, influencers and ICE knowing that nobody wanted them.
