Posting on X and Facebook is not sufficient in this type of emergency, knowing you have multiple locations with children and vacationers not using social media! Get out of your bubbles, boots to the ground and haul ass to get the word out!

[1/2] Easy to blame local officials. NWS, despite their cuts, had been issuing guidance for days, and alerts the previous day. Local officials, who had no alarm system, finally posted on social media at 5am. Why did they not have an alarm system?

If it’s posted on X how would it show up in a person’s feed? I don’t use X but I use FB and I miss emergency alerts all the time on FB unless I search for them because they don’t automatically post to my feed even though I follow the emergency accounts.

The other question I have is how alerts are sent via cell phones. I use a number from a previous town/area code. Friends get amber/silver alerts that I don’t get and we are all sitting at the same table at the same time.

They failed tragically and needlessly, and those girl’s deaths rest unequivocally on republicans looting of essential services for regular citizens that aren’t billionaires. Thiel, Musk, and the Trump & Toadies killed those girls, but will never own it. They can’t even tell the truth. EAT THE RICH.

So if people don’t have an account on X, they would not have gotten any of these messages? If agencies are going to use social media as a primary communication vehicle to inform the public on potential weather catastrophes, they should at a minimum post on all major sites.

All those people in Texas can thank MAGA/DOGE/Trump. They are the reason these children are dead. Don’t pull a punch. It’s because they took the tools away so they can privatize it and make money.

Posting alerts on Twitter is one of their many mistakes. How many people have Twitter? What about emergency alerts that go to folks'cell phones? Did they not have that? It all stinks to high heaven. Those poor children and all the people who lost their lives, their homes, everything.

I think the timeline starts further back. When Elon Musk started gutting agencies that forecast storms and the agency that responds to emergencies. disaster, and many more like it, was foreseeable. This is just getting started. Much more tragedy. more death to come thanks to Trump and Musk.

Conservatives and many Democrats have been running errands for fossil fuel interests for decades. Fossil fuel corporations that in turn spent millions attacking science, and continued to increase production & emissions. Add in libertarians and others that want "small gov't" - and are anti science.

Facebook and X were main sources of alerts? Really? So, if cell service was down. Or WiFi not available, then what? TX seems to: wait until someone dies, then we’ll do something about it. Ice storms, Uvalde.

No, that's just where NPR went looking. NWS alerts are constantly available over radio, everywhere in the US. We've just become, as a nation, too dumb to operate radios.

It may just be that its harder to track down text messages quickly. I'm in Austin proper, not Hill Country, but I got flash flood weather alerts on my phone. But that would have to be confirmed by individuals or agencies, where anyone can check social media.

That’s what I thought when I read it, that a bunch of teen camp counselors needed to be getting freaking X alerts in the middle of the night? My phone’s weather app sends me flash flood alerts, that doesn’t happen in Texas?

"At some point in the morning, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick later said at a press conference, the TDEM Region 6 Assistance Chief had "personally contacted the judges and mayors in that area and notified them all of potential flooding.""

500 1000 on the ground🤷🏼‍♀️ All the videos I saw, I saw some people from the community clearing a bridge, I saw some guy poking around an area just cleared of water. I saw a couple of boats with a couple of people each rescuing people in trees🤷🏼‍♀️

There were people helping, doing a lot of work to rescue….And I’m very thankful, but after the fact. Where was adequate warning? Official systems in place? Prevention? Just asking.

Social media? Please, if you can, follow up with some real journalism that asks local people if: a) they received Wireless Emergency Alerts (cell phone network push alerts) b) local authorities directly calling or visiting them.

So at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 AM, they are posting on X, and later on Facebook ????? Do they think citizens are scrolling Social Media Don't they have reverse 911 to alert people's phones? Weather sirens? Posting on just 2 Social media sites at 2-5AM seems extremely inadequate Not everyone is on SMs

So it turns out it is up to local authorities to activate reverse 911 NWS sends alert to IPAWS for local authorities, who decide whether to issue a reverse 911

In a news article about the timeline of warnings, all NWS mentioned were posts to their social media. I'm glad to hear people's phones did get warnings. One person who barely escaped their home before it was swept away said they had no warnings in the overnight hours, but maybe their phone was off

Also our Alexas with screens were giving weather warnings, but without sound. One oddity is that people keep talking about Blue Alerts — husband and I have lived in Texas our entire lives and have never heard of Blue Alerts. 🤷🏻‍♀️

In San Antonio here and I feel like maybe I've seen blue alerts a couple of times? Maybe? What goes off the most in my area seems to be Amber Alerts 🫤 I have legit anxiety about hail storms so I have close to 10 weather apps going off all the time with any weather event.

Sounds like nws forecasted heavy rain days in advance and flooding just after midnight. But it wasn't until 7am the police department issued a warning while the city said the rain was much needed. Nws did their job. The county is just incompetent.

They also send out WEA/EAS alerts. Radio, TV, and automated phone system. Those went out normally. No ides why they weren't listed here. As for the sirens... Be honest, do people you know actually take shelter for a tornado? What makes you think they'd remember and follow a flood siren?

The administration broke NOAA/NWS and no its supporters & legislators are blaming them. Its classic Trump. Break it, blame everyone but yourself, then claim you're fixing it. All because of #SharpieGate

When the disaster authorities pre-position boats and other flash flood emergency assets, maybe that is the time to remind people that they should have an active escape plan, stay alert to water speed and level, and move to higher ground when the water advances. And check the kid camps early!

A lot of the new admin like DOD, DOJ, NWS accounts can only post on X or Facebook. I see the same posts that are on ‘X’ in this article on Facebook. People should be signed up with whatever weather app they use for alerts. That’s how I get them on my phone (WeatherBug, local news weather, etc)

NWS local/Severe Thunderstorm/Tornado are the only reason I keep Twixxer. I also keep NWS open on my computer. I like Weatherbug for its storm tracks, but I hate that it doesn't auto update. I should prob sign up for an alert, tho, at least when we are traveling.

So you are only entitled to warnings if you live in the Zuckerberg/Musk world? Many of us either never lived there or have walked away from those hateful toxic platforms.

The timeline summary sounds like officials were indecisive and confused. Since the Texas government is clearly incompetent, maybe Trump should send in the national guard and marines?

And apparently using fucking Twitter and fucking Facebook as their notification system. Nowhere did I see that alerts on phones or weather alert radios were activated.

Flash floods kill. Emergency alert systems need to be strengthened not weakened. And you know who weakened this country in more ways than one. The loss of lives shows this. Why did trump allow weakening? For what purpose? Don't ask trump, he's too busy playing golf.

Most of the recreational use on the rivers in Texas are on private land. There is very minimal public access. Local government telling landowners what to do is not really a thing that wins elections in TX. Also, very likely that the local landowners are the local authorities.

“Texas bad” is such a stupid fucking response when DOGE came in, fired a bunch of people, left a shit ton of vacancies, and then that agency suddenly failed. For the love of God stop with your hate boners for certain states and start believing Trump’s bullshit. You are falling for it.

Also in what world does a rich property owner not want to know they should leave or die? That doesn’t even make sense. You are bending over backwards to deflect blame from Trump’s people whether you realize it or not.

My husband retired from the NWS. He said the forecasters send out multiple alerts to cell phones in the area. They warn theu weather radio, cell phones, sociql media etc this article confirms warnings were sent www.texastribune.org/2025/07/05/t...

texastribune.orgIn Texas region prone to catastrophic floods, questions grow about lack of warningWater rose fast along the Guadalupe River, causing more than two dozen deaths. Local officials said they couldn’t have seen it coming.

“All NWS flash flood warnings, including the one issued after midnight on Friday, trigger Wireless Emergency Alerts, the emergency push notification sent through cellphone towers to all wireless phones in the emergency area... That warning was updated nine times throughout Friday, each..”

National Weather Service was working just fine before January 20, 2025. Trump and his soulless cronies broke something that was doing its job. All of them, including those who voted for them have blood on their hands. I hope the memory of those children haunts them everyday.

I knew after Sandy Hook, when Republicans were unmotivated by the slaughter of kindergarten children to enact any kind of gun legislation, that they don't care one bit about the lives of people in any circumstances. It's appalling, but expected, that all Abbott offered to flood survivors is prayer.

Dude went for an early morning jog at 330 along the river and noticed little rain!!?? Sounds like fake story making to try to shirk responsibility. Flood water comes from upriver too. He called the governor at 4 am?? All part of the coverup.

If I was in Texas, Chip Boy, I would help with recovery. I'm not, so the best I can do is move to the mitigation and preparation stages to try to prevent future tragedies. It is constructive. I am sorry that entails calling out: If you had done your damn job, we might not be at this juncture.

So, the elderly on Facebook and the neonazis and bots on X were safe but what about everyone else? Texas always fucks up and pretends it was just God. Thoughts and prayers aren’t enough, Those people didn’t have to die you toe-sucking, inbred, loony gits. Fatalism, rather than science. 😞

They posted the warnings on more than X and Facebook? Hopefully those warning went out on more reliable sources. Many folks myself included do not have X or Facebook. 🌵

Remember when Texans were laughing & joking about their governor putting razor wire in the Rio Grande to drown women & children trying to cross into the United States? Now they want me to pray for them because of a flood? Sorry, folks, but my prayers were already answered, sadly they are dead~!

Dalton Rice said he didn't see a drop of rain when he was out jogging at 3:30 a.m. But I remember from my childhood people paying attention to whether it was raining upstream (not just locally), and if it was, I was told not to play in the arroyos.

Get ready to hear the “ he said she said.” Trump’s bs to ditch the blame should prove to be a real spectacle. My heart breaks for these children. Imagine their fear. If you are a parent, it is crushing.

In emergencies, why post on social media? Blast that shit on emergency sms to all phones. Get on TV. Then post to your own site, then post to SM. “It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”

I have no idea of this is not in fact what they did, I find it frustrating that our government is trying to require us to sign up to the current administration’s preferred private company’s website to receive information

Way back in the olden days we had telephone trees. When spreading the word, use what works - but it has to be 2-Way so that the sender get confirmation that the message was received & understood. Not just “delivered”.

Yes! Now I do have empathy for this situation. My husband and I often hike in the mountains, where there are no weather alerts. That said, it is daytime and we know the forecast when we leave the house, but nonetheless keep a careful eye out potential changing weather conditions.

"At some point in the morning, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick later said at a press conference, the TDEM Region 6 Assistance Chief had "personally contacted the judges and mayors in that area and notified them all of potential flooding.""

Well, take it up with NPR, who wrote the timeline. I would also guess that anyone living remotely, such as in the campground, may not have had those other resources. A weather radio is a likelihood. But whatever - someone massively missed out on their part of the information chain.

That article doesn’t say the alerts went out ONLY on social media. I think they’re just using social media posts as a proxy to create a timeline of when the alerts were issued.

Posted on X.... Posted on X.... Posted on X.... That's what the NWS And the Texas Division of Emergency consider public emergency broadcasting? Since X is nothing but MAGA crazies now, does that mean that they only care if Trump supporters get the warning?

Fascinating indictment of “whomever is responsible for notifying citizens of severe weather situations”. I’m thinking this is a state issue. It looks like the NWS did their job. Someone was supposed to issue an alert… to phones… to radio… to emergency responders… and that didn’t really happen.

Local authorities have to interpret the warning for its potential impacts and put in place advanced plans that are appropriate to the risk. Hard to do that when you don’t understand and you don’t have a plan, other than: “It’s never rained on the 4th of July in the Hill Country before. 🤷‍♀️”

Why were the alerts on X? Not everyone follows X. Were there radio/television alerts? Phone alerts? It would appear there weren't, so people didn't receive the warnings.

If prayer works then why is Trump President? Prayer is a strange thing. Repubs prayed to rip healthcare and food stamps away from millions of Americans . Dems prayed to feed the poor, help the sick and show compassion for immigrants. God chose the evil path?

Cook County in Chicago sends texts to my phone for severe weather and activates warnings for tornados on my phone. Got a storm/tornado warning on my phone a year ago for my location in a rural area in Alberta, CA. Local TX officials rely on fucking social media. This is their disaster preparedness?

“All we know is that prayer does work,…" Governor knows more than that. NPR is always too kind. The story is: NWS Tweeted warnings w/ out following up otherwise. Local officials made decisions based on their feelings. There are no “plans” for evacuating all the recreational sites on the river.

I don't understand this at all. NWS is relying on Twitter? There is an EAS system, or there was one not so long ago, that emergency preparedness people should have available via the appropriate receivers on radio frequencies, not internet alarms via Twitter. WTAF?

I wonder how knowledgeable the NPR reporter(s) is(are)? Reporters often don't know the engineering workings of their stations, they're pretty insulated from the nitty gritty...at least in my experience

I agree with several other posters that officials on the ground lacked a certain sense of urgency. Relying on posts on FB &/or X to alert people of imminent danger is just plain reckless. Heli otters, door to door, phone alerts...they could have done so much more.

Look at all those experts at “DEI” gymnastics! This is what all of America needs to brace for, in any situation. This is the inept govt response we shall get for just about anything! It is all starting to sound the same - isn’t it? Well, some FAFO is going to be absolutely deadly; Lord help us.

After reading the article, it seems like a lot of the blame is on Texas state and local government officials who didn't call for evacuations after being given warnings.

When, if ever, were emergency alerts put out on cell phones? While I understand this administration is Very Online, folks at sleepaway camp aren't checking Twitter. Texas has the ability to send flash flood warnings via cell phones. Why is there no reporting on that?

Well here they are. Not like a Twitter thing our phones just start going off if there's a tornado or severe storm warning in minnesota. Woke me up at 1 am because a tornado touched down nearby. Not excusing this mess thoughm you need actual people running through a rural campsite warning of it.

I know they can do it. I lived in Central Texas for 10 years and I got frequent flash flood/ thunderstorm/ tornado/Amber/Silver alerts during that time. I also know that area reasonably well. Service isn't always great, but it's not like you're in Big Bend or something.

Remember, Ted Cruz and his ilk fought tooth and nail for federal funding for AM Radio not because it’s the bastion of conservative talk no not that of course not. No, because they need it to alert people of emergency situations. Guess that was horseshit.

Warnings should have gone out to mobile cell devices, no mention that they did. The NWS also utilizes the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) service, which is a free notification system that broadcasts alerts to cell users in the threat area when certain weather warnings are issued. No X or FB = screwed

This is because Fucking Felon Moscowbitch wants Twitter to be the only place where people access info from government agencies. Including weather alerts.

Not sure why there wasn’t a camp director with a weather radio for alerts or that there wasn’t a plan for a known flood area. This was apparently a legacy campground for wealthier families so finances shouldn’t be an issue. My local golf course & municipal pool seem more prepared. Very sad.

A couple of questions I have from this timeline 1. Do the local counties/ cities have emergency alert systems? 2. Did they activate them or rely in only in social media to get the word out?

We know there is a natl cell phone alert system. Remember 45 testing it? We were told it would also do regional alerts. Why aren’t we using that when states lack resources to set up their own? Some people would still miss it—ffs, it makes 0 sense to post dire warnings or evac orders on twitter.
