Wow, Free Presbyterians, aren't following the Pope. Did they ever ? Ian Paisley used to rage about the Pope. I'm not sure the Vatican ever gave much thought to him. Protestants, are a pretty wide spectrum of ideas, most being, but 'a spit from popery' according to Free P friends in Belfast 😊

He's lost the American nutjobs that call themselves protestants, that's not the same thing. I happen to be the descendant of a very old French protestant family (since the 17th century) and the pastor quoted pope Leo THREE TIMES at the last office. (Apparently "boo" wasn't the expected reaction)

I have read a lot. I've never read the Gospels. Like most people, I know a lot of stories, the Beatitudes etc. The Jesus the Pope is representing conforms with my idea of what's in the Gospels. I am going to have to read them, to try to understand the Evangelical Jesus. Right now, I don't.

Thanks. I understand that the Gospels were written some decades after the events described, and that nobody knows who the actual authors were. But in trying to assess whether the message within is being honestly interpreted now, that's not really important.

Went to a Catholic elementary school, with religious education every day. These are the kinds of messages we breathed in. Hegseth obviously thinks of Jesus in terms of tattooed slogans, like "Cape Fear's" Max Cady, or someone in a biker gang. No idea what kind of Jesus rural Evangelicals mumble to.

What is this urge to defend the indefensible? "liberal" is not "bad" nor "conservative," "good." Knowing the language takes us out of hypocrisy and delusion. "Losing" Protestants? Is the Catholic Pope now running for office? Like a common lying Republican?

I'm quite surprised by how many non-Catholic Christians and even non-Christians, including atheists, support the Pope on this issue. 🤔

What’s striking to me is that my 83yo Lutheran mother, quite small-c conservative and brought up steeped in a strongly anti-Catholic tradition, is totally behind this Pope and disgusted by Trump. I think that says a lot.

Exactly. I was raised Catholic but laughed at them even as a child (seriously, they have too many irrational quirks without even Biblical justification, like the sublimated goddess worship of Mary and the whole pray to the saints bit)...but these days they're the only religion that gets a pass..

Egal was.

It's so weird how they criticize the Pope for supporting the things - migration, peace not war, taking care of those in need - that the Church has preached since...the beginning.

He's only lost the douchebag wing of protestantism. And really, who doesn't count that as covering themselves in glory?

Confused. Protestants in UK believe King is the one with God’s ear, not the Pope. Protestants worldwide don’t have a single leader, each denomination has its own set of leaders. Why would anyone think otherwise?

"Reverend" Wells' tweet and the fact that both Francis and Leo are the best Popes in my lifetime (at least) should explain why my virulent disgust towards religion per se, its backwards repression and fascist-supportive cultlike ecosystem, does not necessarily apply to the Catholics of late.
