Raises a really good point about objective "truth" in these markets. To some Trump hasn't started a war, when to the other 99.999% of us that aren't absolute fucking idiots, he HAS indeed started a war. These aren't cleanly objective facts like the winner of a race with photo finishes

Given that this guy's job is covering the IDF for a pro IDF paper, there's a good chance the tiny detail is something like "the armed terrorist" actually being a "crying toddler"

It's the most likely addiction to result in death of the addict, financial ruin, and ruination of the lives of the people around the addict. But more importantly, they are probably the most annoying kind of addict there is.

I dunno.. I get your point, but I've known more people die from Heroin than gambling Not saying there isn't a direct intersect between the two, but direct causation needs a stewards Bet you a tenner eh? (off colour joke.. probably shouldn't have made it)

I grew up watching 140 baseball games, 50-60 basketball games and every single football game and countless college games for free on local TV There were definitely some gambling-affected games but not like today 1970-1990 really was a golden era

That was the exact reason sports gambling was banned in the first place. There is a reason that boxing match fixing is one of the most widely used tropes in media... because sports gambling always brings about a plague of match fixing and cheating.

I think it's like Prohibition: is the harm from banning it worse than the harm from legalizing, taxing, and monitoring it? I would have said yes, but casinos, leagues, and states have no incentive to restrict gambing in ways that reduce revenue, so that guardrails that should exist don't.

I don't think it's comparable to alcohol. Gambling is inherently a predatory industry where one side is exploiting the other. With alcohol, you get cut off if you drink too much. We have laws about drunk driving. There is a lot of restrictions on alcohol advertisement.

The leagues are likely the vulnerable point - if betting corrupts the leagues, the leagues and their players are out of work and the casinos don't have anything to sell bets on (and have more potential to lose if the outcomes are rigged), and the money from casino ads won't cover the losses to them.

Banned in America, the rest of us managed to have sports gambling without losing our minds for generations!

I don't mean this as a judgement in any way, just an observation, that the average left of center person is becoming a fire and brimstone prophet about our violent, decadent society in the streets, and a sexually-liberated gender egalitarian in the sheets.

Can't wait to find out in 20 years that Polymarket expanding to take bets on current events was actually a move influenced by the USGov in order to outsource harassing journalists to regular citizens.

This would be really bad if he was, say, a sports reporter. It's significantly worse when you learn that he's a military correspondent.

Every time I see something like this that makes me think back to Zac Gallen and 2023. He was pitching and left the game in like the 2nd-3rd inning. Betters online were openly bitching about losing thousands of dollars because he left early and hoping he was injured because of it.
