Hierarchy from the perspective of a non-finance news consumer. Note: all Opinion is excluded. S-tier (can’t go without): Bloomberg A-tier (narrower coverage but high quality): FT, WSJ, Reuters, AP B-tier (good but myopic): NPR, ABC, NBC, CNBC, MSNBC C-tier (biased): NYT, WaPo, CBS D-tier: huge list

Hard news at WSJ has always been good and doesn’t have any stink of the Opinion page on it. They’re completely separate.

And that’s been true for a long time. I remember at my employee orientation at a buy-side firm in the 90s, the executive partner said that all employees should read the WSJ, except for the opinion page. He said to avoid it because, “it was run by Neanderthals”

I've been insanely horribly misquoted by one of their reporters, egregiously bad work. But I give most of their reportage the benefit of the doubt.

Incentives in finding and evaluating information. Money is a subject where our usual desire to hear what we want might be subordinate to our desire to hear what is true. Not always, but far more often than when wallowing in our biases has less immediate and personal effect.

I've had to explain to lots of people the last few years that finance is weirdly open about how much trump sucks and how talking about exactly why trump/maga sucks is critical for actually beating the street.

Also strikes me as the area of news that has the best and most frequent built in objective checks on the news reporting that allow reporters to evaluate their sources and methods and readers to evaluate the news. Monthly and quarterly data releases vs elections every 2 or 4 years in politics

these ratings so subjective I'm a big BBG consumer but at times, like NYT has a bias, and it's often a 'NYC/coastal' bias, not always political. And NPR, MSNBC over NYT/ CBS?? 🙃NPR is very biased ( as a 30 + yr NPR person) & MSNBC is'Fox of left'. add 2c: you want BBC for global news

NYT is A-tier for international news ex Israel, but even that’s improving recently as the winds have shifted

Agree to disagree. Though I think their coverage of things like the Ukraine War, the Ebola outbreak in Africa or the fighting in Somalia is better than most US outlets, though lags behind the BBC (this is their bread and butter)
