I got a great question on my Ramadan thread: do Muslims also need to avoid consumption by proxy in videogames? Does consuming in-game food or drink break the fast? Basically: does your character have to go fast? The answer is no, unless you happen to be playing Sonic the Hedgehog.

Yes, and not just Muslims in Ramadhan but all human beings at all times must immediately stop playing all video games forever. This is the only way the human species will survive.

Heh good one! Someone once was surprised i killed animals in games as a vegan. I said, I'm killing humans in games so why would I feel any differently about virtual animals! Although I don't play the hunting type games that glorify real life hunting.

Same, sometimes I will play a game vegan for a bit and then I’m like “there’s no real animals here, just code” and then I become a menace riding horses and trying to trample deer to death in rdr2.

In a game I play, a character said she was a vegetarian so I went out of my way to not give her any meat even though it had no effect on gameplay! Other players thought I was being weird, but at the end of the day, it’s just a game. Playing it in a way you enjoy is what’s most important.

Heh. Also, if the character in a game is explicitly Muslim*, should you have them avoid consumption? *Come to think of it, are there any game PCs that are explicitly Muslim?

Islands of the Caliph has a realtime system and requires the player to do prayers at the correct time and observe Ramadan (and it's also a great game if you like retro RPGs)

My Mormon mother wouldn’t consume alcoholic beverages in World of Warcraft…but she had the BrewFest mount, so I asked how and apparently she let my dad and brother play her character, since it wasn’t a thing they worried about.
