Me: "Hey LLM, can we flip a background-image without using CSS transform?" LLM: "Yes. I'm programmed to make you a happy camper so I will first pretend there is a solution before telling you there is no solution."

The fact that it actually corrects itself later on is actually good and desirable behavior by the LLM. Earlier models wouldn't do this at all, since their training rewarded internal consistency over correctness. You can tell since then they've put effort into making it steer itself back from errors

What work did they steal? If I learn from what you put out in the world, am I stealing from you? If I mimic your style how is that stealing? Is your distaste for AI biasing you? Not judging just asking. I am using AI, not for much, especially not to create drivel. A small part of what I do create.

do you know what the GPL is, if so, how do you square the circle of GPL code being sucked into an LLMs weights without that license being applicable? the GPL also counts if you only read the code, hence clean room designing needing to be a thing

this is a common result with LLMs when their "reasoning" is disabled, enabling it and setting an appropriate effort level prevents this from happening

I can think of ways: 1) Embed an svg using a data url make that embed the image and let the svg do the transform 2) Flip it server side 3) The paint api, although I'm not sure if an image can be passed to the worklet. (needs js) 4) js + canvas + element(#canvasid) (only ff) or URL.createObjectURL()

For 1) the image would have to be embedded inside the svg itself as a data: URL. That's not very scalable. 3) yes, per specs you can drawImage CSSImageValue from there, but Chrome only IIRC.

Interesting, I didn't know SVGs in background images have that limitation. I just had one more idea, flipping it in a service worker. That still needs js, but is otherwise transparent.

Yes CSS <image>, html <img>, and svg <image>, all use the secure animated processing mode, which disables external refs. For a no js solution though: bsky.app/profile/tris...

Asking for "obscure technique"? You can ab(use) EXIF, which provides an Orientation field. You can then control that orientation in CSS with `image-orientation`: jsfiddle.net/rgom5cd9/

Typically it will consume your miserly token allotment first, going down one rat hole after another, before admitting it is a silly regurgitation machine.

Was using transform (for the smudges in your other reply ;)) I couldn't find answers with a search engine. Was thinking maybe `background-size` behaves the same as scale, but MDN indicated no. Then I wondered if maybe there's some obscure technique I didn't know of, so searched with LLM.
