the main reason to go after the rich is that if you don’t the entire structure of your society is predicated on the whims of people who are entirely disconnected from ordinary life billionaires are simply too dangerous to exist, and any budgetary stuff that comes out of it is just a bonus

There's a lot to unpack there, but it's mostly cherry picking scary sounding stuff (to the rich anyway) about taxes being the Golden Calf that kills productivity. Which is a stupid thought because the root cause is money being used to create more money without the pesky in between of production.

After your first billion in total wealth, you should get a plaque, a nice gala dinner thrown in your honor, and taxed at 100% for every penny you earn after that and IDGAF if it's "unrealised earnings". It shouldn't even be a thing. People who get a billion dollars should just give up, retire and

let other people have a fucking turn on the machine. And yes, that includes taking your business empire, breaking it up and selling it, and letting 10,000 local chicken places start up instead of 10,000 KFCs.

We need to bring back high marginal tax rates and remove the incentive to strip the profit off everything everywhere.

Also if we shouldn't do it because "Billionaires will complain and leave", not only is that rewarding spoiled brats for their shitty behavior, but that's also a bluff they do.

that would be the best outcome, how awesome would it be "Bezos, Zuckerberg and Musk renounce their citizenship" - yes please! Like where are they going to go ? Good luck!

It’s no coincidence that the prevalence of billionaires and their obscene wealth in America is directly correlated with the lack of structural accountability holding this administration back. This is far beyond financial equality. NOBODY should have this level of power over their fellow citizens.

100% - like the reverse of the "trickle down" justification - whose primary effect is to make rich people richer - any other benefit is purely coincidental Going after billionaires is justification enough - any other benefit is coincidenctal but welcome

Wealth is the power to allocate resources and labor. Why does it make sense for unaccountable individuals or self-interested closed entities to have more allocative power than entire societies? Why can economists not understand this basic fucking fundamental of the study of economies.

Pweese don't hurt the poor defenseless billionaires! They're just little innocent beans that want to be left alone with all their ill-begotten wealth so that they can *checks notes* manipulate politics, the economy, and the environment, thus making things measurably worse for everyone else!

"Going after me for restitution after I stripped your car of all its parts, gasoline, and safety devices won't magically 'fix' your broken vehicle."

We can take their wealth and burn it and it will still be a better world. The world's richest man bought himself into our government and has set off a global Holocaust with the destruction of USAID. That right there is the last argument any of us needs to end them.

I mean it could be net negative for the fisc and still be worth doing! The concentration of power is the problem and it’s not a problem of resource allocation.

Hence my proposal that after 100 megadollars, the tax rate goes to zero and you are contacted by the mausoleum service who will take all further earnings to build you a fitting resting place

Nearly every story with Dragons as antagonists has a lesson that boils down to, "When someone is hoarding all the wealth, you kill that motherfucker and bring the gold back to the peasants to jump start the local economy." I see no reason to assume that would be any different in real life.

For one, it absolutely fixes budgets. Secondly, however, to your point, yes, it has been shown time and again that extreme wealth inequality is detrimental to democratic governance itself. Every billionaire is an open threat to our human right to self-governance.

that's a smart way to put it. haven't exactly thought about it that way before but you're right. my thought has been that the basic social contract is everyone agrees to be governed and in exchange the government works for the good of everyone. billionaires inherently pervert that to their ends

it’s true that a functional welfare state requires more of a contribution from society at large than just soaking the rich can provide, but that’s besides the point soaking the rich is a goal unto itself

it is quite literally a global security issue, as the very rich are in some cases more powerful than entire governments

You can go after them on so many fronts that can even appeal to right wingers like national security; remember when Elon shut down Starlink for Ukraine because he had a call with Putin?

It valuable, though, to distinguish between people (and private corporations) with such wealth that it distorts political power like a black hole and those who are very wealthy compared with everyone else (multi-millionaires, for example) but don't post quite the same problems for democracy itself.

Just make every penny over $1bn at 100% tax - no write-offs, you can't donate it or split it to family, DNGAF if it's capital gains or whatever: every penny after gone. Go fuck off and retire, and let someone else have a go on the machine for a while.

It’s a problem in general, I agree, but a huge part of it is Citizens United. If the ultra rich‘s political influence would be reduced by limiting their financial donations, as it’s the case in many other countries, it would already be a huge step to reduce the threat.

Just cut off donations at 100 per person - or, hear me out - make campaigns funded by the Federal Government at $10m per candidate. NO donations. No PACs. NOTHING. All campaign funding is from government, and when it's gone - I hope you did a good job. Guess you'll have to run on POLICY!

Is that true though? I feel like broadly distributed taxation is virtuous, but also extractive taxation on the wealthiest seems more than sufficient to raise revenue to fund a functioning welfare state, at least in the USA.

The numbers just don’t add up. The US is huge and as rich as these goons are they aren’t even close to covering even the most basic expansions of the welfare state. Too, most of their wealth is phantoms; Musk isn’t sitting on a pile of gold, he’s borrowing against future earnings.

It cannot be overstated how corrosive wealth inequality is on every level It erodes the social fabric and institutions, but it boils away the billionaires' brains too

And even robber barons of the past did things like build hundreds of libraries and other cultural and educational institutions with only their name on them as a price. Meanwhile the current crop of billionaires only invest in buying politicians and media companies to further their own interests.

When you come across a person with hoarding disorder, who is behaving dangerously to themself and others, the correct response is not "they worked hard for those thousands of newspapers and *earned* them"

Reaganomics must die its been around my whole life. Billionaires must be eliminated and a new platform of must be established.
