I do think when historians look back the period the exact moment where it flipped and started going the other way won’t be anything any politician did but my Minneapolis neighbors weathering the worst of the regime in the streets, rallying together, fighting back, and winning

Would have ended Trump 2016 immediately, we'd have a majority on the Supreme Court, we'd still have USAID, we'd still have Roe

It's all machine opcodes and punch cards for this guy. Don't want to be reliant on "automated systems" like "assemblers" and "compilers", that's "cheating"

Treemans@treemans.bsky.social

Then I'm sorry but uh Maybe it's not for you? You are not only cheating the system, but also yourself. Becoming reliant on automated systems to produce your own creativity. Have fun i guess but its nothing id ever want to touch.

THEY ARE NOT POWERLESS TO STOP HIM! Go back to Washington, stand on the steps of the Capitol and demand Johnson and Thune recall the House and Senate, and impeach him. THIS IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK! THERE IS LITERALLY AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL! (It's called the Constitution.)

Jon Cooper@joncooper-us.bsky.social

Republican lawmakers are incensed about Trump's dismissal of Ukraine — and powerless to stop him. That frustration hit a new peak on Monday as they sought to address Trump’s decision to purchase Russian diesel, waive sanctions on Moscow, and potentially stop sharing intelligence with Ukraine.

saw a poll showing Talarico up only two points and I decided it's time to Doom Again. Polls have all skewed D in the past ten years. I think we'll get the House but not as much as we think and I really can't imagine the Senate going. Look for Florida being called barely by sunset, as usual.

❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this. Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.

you wouldn't smoke or try heroin but you certainly would study these drugs under a microscope, run experiments on the substances directly, etc. Bender is still making claims like OpenAI is hiding "calculators" behind their models so they can fool people into thinking they can do math now.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

It is absolutely bananas that one of the most prominent anti-AI experts in America is talking like this. Talking to ChatGPT isn’t like doing heroin or downloading child porn. It will not hurt you and has no ethical valence. It will help you understand the nature of something that is now endemic.

ah yes, "grade school logic", which brought us such bangers as "did not!" "i know you are but what am I?" and "my dog ate my homework", not to mention lingering theories of Santa Claus while the Tooth Fairy is working overtime with grade schoolers

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

To all the quotes and replies gleefully dunking: The post below is unquestionably true, it's literal grade-school logic. If you read it and think "That can't be right, this man is idiot" you should recognize that something has gone wrong with your own thinking.

the line is when the being has a central nervous system and brainwaves. do LLMs generate brainwaves? no! why assume "consciousness" when you dont even have brainwaves? why is "can figure out a math problem" some magic line? dogs and ants can't do math yet are conscious! brainwaves!

I can’t believe that this debate somehow gotta stupider after I left it. Taking the demand to prove a negative and turning it upside and calling it an affirmative claim is not a thing. Your vague feeling that LLMs might be conscious is just a vague feeling.

"Bowling balls aren't conscious" is a strong, affirmative claim. It implies a lot of specific things about consciousness. It requires strong evidence. “We can’t say for sure if bowling balls are conscious” is a weaker, cautious claim. It doesn’t make any particular evidence about consciousness.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Again: “AIs aren’t conscious” is a strong, affirmative claim. It implies a lot of specific things about consciousness. It requires strong evidence. “We can’t say for sure if AI is conscious” is a weaker, cautious claim. It doesn’t make any particular evidence about consciousness.

there’s an uncomfortable nuance probably worth diving into about the ethics of using generative AI to ship code versus generate art assets versus clone a person’s voice versus push slop to the algorithms. I truly don’t know where the line is. it’s frustrating

here he goes again with the crayons-and-play-doh characterization of consciousness this kind of thinking buffets my theory that not everyone is actually conscious, people like Will are actually machines.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

I think the evidence is that for thousands of years we pointed to things like our ability to reason, to communicate, to create and demonstrate creativity, to recognize feelings in others and respond to them, as evidence of our own consciousness, and suddenly machines are doing all of that

all of these same things were said about word processors vs typewriters ("we produce documents faster, but now we're bogged down doing tons of revisions! Productivity has gone down!") and computers in offices overall. It even has a name, the "productivity paradox". It resolves after people adapt

this is misleading because while it describes this phenomenon, it doesn't conclude abandoning AI and mostly recommends firms need to get better at code review. I can review well written code, which I directed at a high level, *a lot* faster than I can write it. That's the skill you need to have.

Butlerian Jihadist of House Dornick@shimminykricket.blacksky.app

Basically AI allows software engineers to produce shitty code *faster* and in higher volumes which increases the amount time spent on code reviews and revisions nullifying the productivity gained from producing the code in the first place.

Susan Collins was asked tonight about the FBI pay-to-play probe of her inner circle. Her answer: "false." False? Her donor is in federal prison. His $150,000 went to a super PAC backing her. The inquiry closed after Trump took office. Try again.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Let me just explain the arithmetic thing real quick; I'm seeing a lot of people not understanding what it's supposed to show (or was supposed to show in 2023). First, let's agree that an LLM is a Stochastic Parrot, a description which I find poetic, useful, informative, and basically correct.

Colin@colin-fraser.net

I really wasn’t trying to start a fight with Prof. Bender but now that she has created a long thread subtweeting me and her disciples are all yelling at me, let me just say that this is the crux right here. She seems to respond as though I am describing something a priori impossible.
