As they say, *ahem*, some personal news: After 20 years in journalism, including a decade at CBC News, I'm moving on to something different. I’m launching my own independent practice as a Data & Storytelling Strategist. Yes, I'm giving up a stable job in order to hang up my own shingle. Why? 🧵👇

Well, congratulations Robson. This is a bold move. I've consulted, on and off, for more than 25 years, and can attest to its highs and lows. Always keep a close eye on your client pipeline, even when you're run off your feet. Good luck!

Good on you for pursuing change in the way you see best, using your immense talents. It's a loss to the CBC, to be sure, but I'm hoping it's a net gain to the bigger picture of fighting misinformation.

Robson, best wishes in this new chapter. I’ve always found your data analysis insightful and look forward to continuing to follow your work here on Bluesky and on LinkedIn.

Sorry to see you leave journalism—a big loss for the Ceeb and for Calgary journalism. But this sounds like an exciting step. There are some real upsides to going independent. Congrats!

Thanks, Jeremy. I really appreciate that. It feels like a step into the unknown, for sure, but it's good to hear positive words about going indie! Looking forward to the learning curve.

For me, you've been a highly trusted source of news and analysis. I'm sure there are individuals and organizations out there who would jump at the chance to harness some of your expertise, so wishing you great success in the new venture!

You were the hardest working reporter in Calgary. I miss that city so much. I moved back to Edmonton 10 years ago and I regret it everyday. I have no life outside of work because of my hectic schedule and there is absolutely no one to date here. I feel like maybe I should marry an American.

All the best to you Robson. So much I could say - but perhaps most important: your daily updated virus/cases/immunization visuals during the pandemic's waves were a *key* part to us preserving sanity and staying COVID free until well after our 3-generation household all received 2 doses each. Kudos!

Oh wow that is really validating to hear. I'm so glad that information was so directly useful during that scary time. The real power of data lies in how it's used to help people, imo, so that warms my heart. Thank you!

Same! Getting that u6 vax took so long! I can't wait to see what you do next Robson. Your cbe absence data scraping was my intro to scraping data... and now I'm hooked. I've also learned so much about data viz from your visuals!

Hi Robson, I have a full time job but do some web development on the side for fun. If you ever need help on that aspect of your project I'd love to hear more about it.

Thank you for the reporting you have done on the toxic drug crisis and other public health issues. You will be missed. As families, it means a lot when the stories of our loved ones are told. 💜

In part, because I’m old enough to use phrases like “hang up my own shingle.” Journalism has been a slice, but it’s time for something new. The industry has also changed SO MUCH since I started out as a newspaper reporter back in 2005. (I didn’t even have a cellphone then!) So I'm changing too…

These days, traditional news still plays an important role in society, but there are so many other avenues for communication. Unfortunately, many of these new avenues are, um, a bit lacking when it comes to facts, evidence, context and clear communication of important ideas.

I’ve seen so many people and organizations doing important, meaningful work who struggle to break through the noise of our modern information ecosystem. I tried my best as a journalist to highlight this type of work and information. Now, I'm taking a different approach…

With my experience at the intersection of data analysis & public communication, I’ve given myself a new assignment: To help people & organizations uncover insights in their data, craft credible narratives about the meaningful work they do, and share it with the audiences they need to reach.

That's a good question. The exact shape of all of this is yet to be determined but I still expect to maintain a public presence and put stuff out there just because I think it's interesting or important and in the public interest.
