"Don't Engage, Just Block" absolutely IS the Bluesky motto. The notion of a "Bluesky Elder" is vaguely ridiculous but the ONE THING that we oldheads are good for is telling the new folks that blocking without engagement is praxis, and encouraging them to do it early and often.

"Don't Engage, Just Block" should be the Bluesky motto. We have a chance to start over and make this place better than the other place.

I’m no longer engaging. MAGA is only here because they need us as a vehicle for their hate. We don’t need them, or want them. I’m here to spread love and positivity, while we resist the dark forces.

not too piss on your piniata, but as an 'oldhead' i have to say that is an idea beyond shitpoor. why would you not try to suggest that they stand up for what they believe in? what you have told them to believe in? how can you believe in something you can't even VERBALLY defend?

It also may help to guard against bad blocklist curators. If I'm in a chill mood I'll unmute a muted reply and do a manual review of the post & account. So far they've all deserved it, but you never know.

Please make it the motto so maybe folks will ease up. This seems more to be a “pull someone aside when it happens” sort of thing. People are adaptable and catch on pretty quick. On my feed at least, the ratio of these “culture tips” to the incidents they’re depicting is going asymptotic. We get it.

Yeah, I already did this recently. I was so used to the toxic battle waging on over on X it was almost a habit to engage. But the truth is that I don’t owe toxic people that engagement. This feels much healthier.

That is it, exactly. I'll let them troll the mirror. It's engagement that keeps the conversation going when it needs to die a quick death so we don't reinforce their behavior. I think it's apparent enough THAT crowd is entertained by conflict. I'm not here to entertain them.

At the other place, I used to try to engage and was so often attacked that I used bad language in response. Years later, in the last days of a political campaign, my worthy opponent searched for certain uses of said words and blasted them out to the local paper and to FB.

Sounds good to me. I am A OK with blocking Covid with a vaccine and toxic waste dumps, bots and swamp drivel but I do engage in fact drive debate at a respectful distance and clear terms of engagement

Completely agree. Don't feed the trolls. Block and don't engage. It's not something 'entertaining' to do. It's disruptive and destructive. Just walk away.

I’ve also started using “Containment not Engagement”. It doesn’t work to challenge trolls, they don’t want to change their minds and get their rocks off on having someone try to engage them in conversation.

I hear ya. Unfortunately, fighting in the muck for the last two years of X got me addicted to the thrill of virtually punching Naz!s and their proxies in the face. I may still need to spend time over there each day until I wean myself off that unpleasant substance abuse. Can't do it cold turkey.

But it's what they want us to do. It makes them feel powerful. I ran into one of those people, called them out for it. They told me to block them. Nope. Censoring is what the other side wants and I'm not playing the censorship game!

I used to think “know your enemy” was a good way to stay informed. I didn’t necessarily engage, but I rarely blocked. After this election, I know all I need to about the people I disagree with. I’ve already pre-blocked people I’ve seen posting here.

Blocking is effective and offers peace of mind. We are too far down the rabbit hole to “listen”. I was constantly bombarded with content I did not want to read and in no way fit any algorithm related to me. It was all hate and propaganda.

What, you don’t like flipping through the first few posts in an account and thinking, “Why yes, this person is a genuine cretin and threat to everyone’s mental well-being”? I’ll double-check once in a while to be sure about dismissal but have yet to change my mind.

Different standards, Pat. I’m not here to find cretins or devil’s advocates. I’m here to chill. And anyone I don’t want in my feed is gone. Feel free to block who you want, buddy. No shame.

Oh, totally with you on this. I like this little conceptual space and want to keep it as cretin-free as possible - and have the block list to prove it. Most are an easy block at first mention. Once in a while it’s like, “Am I reading this person right…okay, yeah, [button].”
