β€œI don't understand why this record isn't a hit, everyone I know has bought it." "You know everyone who has bought it."

We're selling shares in the end of the world. Not so much late stage capitalism as final stage capitalism.

I want to know how the sun realises the clocks have gone back and that it has to set an hour earlier. Does somebody go up there and change a dial? πŸ€”

Pretty much everything. We just refuse to accept it because we've forgotten all the bad things and magnified the few truly good things.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Struck me today just how little we're going to remember Farage when he finally goes away. He's just... noise. No real ideas, no ringing phrases, nothing that will linger.

What a weird world we live in - Ukraine hits a data centre deep in Russia - Irish twitter users see racist posts about IPAS centres in Offaly fall off a cliff

And now the best part: Bot traffic from the #Yandex network has plunged to near zero following the strike on its Vladimir data center. Bot traffic includes automated requests from search crawlers, scrapers and other online services. Twitter must be a ghost town by now.

I've always suspected the reason there were no subtitles for the Chewbacca was his dialogue was so expletive laden it couldn't be shown on a family film. Ditto R2

Bob Larkin’s cover to 1980’s Crazy #60 featuring Spock & Kirk from Star Trek and, from The Muppets, the Pigs In Space. It’s a great tragedy that nobody in power saw this & thought, this is exactly the kind of movie we ought to be making.

This is not just reactionary authoritarianism and clueless waffling; it's M&S reactionary authoritarianism and clueless waffling. (And Sainsbury's, too...)

My teacher brother has just informed me that his primary school kids now refer to anything shit or old fashioned as "Brexit". Which has made my morning.

Me to AI: DO NOT make values up. Use proven reference values. AI: I will use values from XYZ Me: That's great. Go ahead then. AI: <makes up a bunch of values completely unrelated to those in XYZ> 🀣

Manchester City cheated Premier League rules, the Commission found. Did it also cheat HMRC? We've examined the decision and leaked Mancini documents. We think City likely failed to pay Β£12m in tax. There should be a criminal investigation. Thread:

As I keep saying, not repairing a bridge imposes a cost on future generations, just not the kind of cost that is immediately visible in the accounting system

Seriously, "we spent all this money, and all we have to show for it is this worthless infrastructure that supports and enables the rest of the economy" is fully deranged. I hate it so much.

AI is a commodity. And yet the big firm's business model is based on ramping up prices in the future not reducing the cost of production.

David Bent@davidbent.bsky.social

"As an...economic historian...I know that β€œanything that can be mass-produced will fall in price dramatically when it is mass produced”....And yet I forgot it." @timleunig.bsky.social on battery prices & path to Net Zero. So. Many. People. Make. This. Mistake. timleunig.substack.com/p/i-was-wrong

I've been thinking a lot about friction, especially in recruiting. There are many situations where a certain amount of friction is required to prevent the system being overwhelmed. And we've made a lot of things too easy.

Daniel Knowles@dlknowles.bsky.social

Same thing with gig tickets. Bots already fight to get Glastonbury tickets and the like. That will get so much worse. A lot of things depend on friction to work well. Being an early adopter of AI agents is gonna be a lot better than when everyone has one

Hampshire police say man was arrested on suspicion of destroying ships or endangering their safety under the Aviation & Maritime Security Act 1990, criminal damage, criminal damage with intent to endanger life, & conduct endangering ships, structures or individuals under Merchant Shipping Act 1995

Emma Yeomans@yeomans.bsky.social

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

Imagine what Orwell would say about Farage!

This new academic year, I'm starting a campaign for all university lectures to be made from the top of a 10' ladder with the lecturer wearing a hard hat and a high-vis vest.

Stephen Kinsella@stephenstroud.bsky.social

Agreed. And then look at the job losses in the university sector. But maybe the media should ask itself why it reports in this way, as though the only β€œreal” jobs are those with helmets or hi-viz.

It's amazing how many job adverts essentially say, "Driver wanted. MUST have experience of driving a Ford Fiesta." (And will turn your down if your experience is limited to driving a Ford Mondeo.)
