Stock buybacks are the ultimate confession of failure of leadership. "We have money that we can't figure out how to use to make the company better. So here, you can have it."

It’s called “cashing out”. Short term thinking from a board that chose $. Make it illegal? No, it’s the investor’s choice. The can chose to contract, remain the same, or increase market share. Today, they chose to contract.

GM killed my sister. She was in a car accident that she should have walked away from but there were issues GM knew about and decided not to fix bc paying victims & their families would be cheaper. If any of the issues had been addressed, she’d be here. The cheapest fix they didn't advise on was ~$3.

This why they outsourced AUTO jobs in Ohio cities never returned NEW AUTO EV jobs in cities like Dayton, Beavercreek, Vandalia, Kettering etc it wasn't labor COST it was GREED !

In the abstract, stock buybacks ARE a reasonable way to return capital to investors when the company doesn’t have a compelling other way to invest it. BUT companies keep giving investors outsized rewards and screwing their employees. We need to shift laws and incentives much more towards workers.

Same reason we don’t have a working immigration policy. Or tax policy… Hell he’s even the precedent for a mentally compromised president. Real trailblazer with cross dressing being one of most successful movies. Oh right can’t forget about the gun control

Stock buybacks as we know them started w/ Reagan (of course). Dems have held the White House for about 20 of the last 40 yrs since then. In all that time, why have they not rewritten tax codes to fix that corporate loophole?!? Why are we even voting Blue when they let terrible GOP rules continue?

Stock buybacks only happen when the company gets other people to sell their stock When other people sell their stock capital gains taxes are collected Making buybacks illegal reduces taxes collected The money from selling stocks after taxes is used to buy other things or invest in other companies

NEW GM CARS SUCK no mechanic will even fix them not to mention they trace you and can turn your car off at any time. let them buy back and break up. invite more Toyota and Honda to your nation instead or let the US slide in to a 3rd world nation as is currently happening

I don't understand how all of you are so dum. bsky.app/profile/isho...

THE MONEY DOESN'T PHYSICALLY EXIST. It's just data on servers shuffled around, deleted from one account and added to another. I don't understand how you all see it as some impassable barrier when the food, homes, and medicine exist, but just get left to rot. You morons need to grow the fuck up.

When SHTF again for GM there should be no public bailout this time. They never learn, just like the banks…take, take, take. If it is true capitalism they want then when they falter again let them fail for their greed and arrogance.

They should return all the money lost to investors when they filed bankruptcy and restructured with a new stock symbol years ago. I lost quite a bit on GM stock and promised never to buy it again. And I haven’t, Ford for me.

Owned Ford since before the auto industry crash. Ford never took the bailout. That impress me. GM filed bankruptcy and went insolvent. Got the bail out, rebranded and left investors with nothing after tax payer bailout. I was one of the shareholders at the time it went “belly up”.

Oh,its worse than that. There will come a point soon, where the economy does this, and customers not buying do that. And GM will announce plans for bankruptcy{IE:too big to fail},and that GM needs a government bailout AGAIN.Meaning its GM CEO's and owners making money any way they can. Greedy Mofo's.

Back in 2008 when GM was on their last leg, WE bailed them out. They were allowed to walk away from many environmentally contaminated sites like the Lansing Verlinden Plant and the Lansing Craft Center. These sites, hundreds of acres sit vacant 18 years later in the city of Lansing. Useless.

$7.25 an hour Federal minimum wage has not been increased in 17 years Workers are losing Healthcare and food assistance Corporations and rich people get tax cuts What have Republicans done for the working class in America?

Its the only thing keeping the market afloat. Since 2008 thats it. Its why wages won't increase, or why everything is shit. Buy back stock only concentrates wealth for those who already have it

I don't have a problem with stock buybacks. I do have a problem with the chasm between the top and bottom pay levels. In a well-run, successful company the CEO, the investors, AND all workers should win.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but buybacks are literally the logical equivalent of dividends, except unlike dividends, they don't require investors to pay taxes until the stock is sold. That's it, that's the entire difference.

You don’t have to make stock buybacks illegal. Just rule that share sales by any owner of a company that has bought back its shares do not qualify for capital gains preferences. Voila(!), no company management would dare do it.

This is what almost every company is doing with the money they saved in taxes from the BBB. So trickle down doesn't work, had been proven not to work. Companies don't invest the tax savings into manufacturing or creating new jobs and hiring people. They invest the money for their shareholders.

A stock buyback is a company's way of saying, "We have no plans for the future to invest in so we're going to pass our cash back to the investors and bankers.".

It's the looting stage of an empire collapsing. GHrab all you can, when you can, for tomorrow may never come. The leaders all know it and are prepared. While the rest of us are given the farce of an 'election' to play with.

Despite being bailed out, subsidised, promoted and protected for decades all 3 big auto makers have done nothing to innovate. Still making gas guzzling huge autos & not much going in the EV lines. China has 2 models that will destroy the GM small EV market, management doesn't care, just throw money.

No, stock buybacks shouldn't be illegal (I have an extensive background in investing, finance and economics). If the company felt better returns could be made through expanding the business, they'd do this (generally speaking). Some markets are mature and growth slows. Buybacks are legitimate.

(A working person earning a living is not the same as a company manipulating the market with stock buy-backs to increase their profits and if you think they are the same I think you're the one who needs a deeper conversation. Goodnight.)

GM may be greedy. The idea of "stock buybacks should be illegal" is a really stupid take that really shows zero understanding of how economics and corporate finance work.

Stupid take👆🏽. Buybacks were always illegal until 1982 when Reagan the moron made them legal. Corporations did just fine without them prior to that.

Privatizing immense corporate cash windfalls for share repurchases instead of investing in workers, clean tech, and R&D drains our industrial base. Public wealth and market stability should foster green innovation and good jobs, not short-term Wall Street enrichment.

Special thanks to former Fed Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan for being first to allow stock buybacks through structural shift in corporate finance during his tenure: 1987–2006, where companies transitioned from paying dividends to repurchasing shares.

The problem with sayed is he doesn’t know when to stop an argument. I was nodding along with him until he said the last line. Stock buybacks are a legitimate use of capital. Binding a company’s hand on this will ensure that they will do dumber more deleterious actions. While Sayed is a talent

The rage is the money was not paid out in highly taxed wages. The misunderstanding that buying back stock to reduce the supply means other people had to sell, and pay taxes on the sale. That the money from the sale is used to invest in companies that want to grow.

Buybacks are simply letting owners sell their stake back to the company. Prudent for GM as they haven't been successful competing in EVs or autonomous driving. Probably due to unions and bureaucratic mismanaagement. Trying to compete where they are disadvantaged is throwing money away.

Not against them being illegal, but there should be some strict requirements to not only protect workers, but also to benefit them.

Stock buybacks shouldn't be illegal. Only they should be restricted to the point of any Corporation that holds debt. Shouldn't be allowed to buy back stock. Especially since the interest they pay on the debt they hold is tax deductible. They game the system by hyping the share prices for bonuses....

The first thing Sayed has brought up that I disagree with. For starters, natural price discovery in capital markets is dependent on buying back obligations at the appropriate times. I am against any admin or its head who injects their opinion beyond their own processes.

They should buy back their L87s. They chose to outsource those crankshaft to the lowest bidder causing engines to blow up before they even get carbon. Marie barra could take her thick oil solution and used it as her personal lube

That’s literally all it does. They could send out dividends, like they used to do, but those are taxable. By buying back stock they increase the value of each share without anyone being taxed. It’s the entire point.
