The Democrats routing Trump would make then a party of past grievances rather than forward-looking optimism. They could have been better off losing this one to Trump than defeating him comprehensively, opines Justin Webb of the BBC

I would argue that making Trump a lame duck resident for the next two years would give Democrat presidential candidates the space to put forward their agendas. Right now, because of the noise from the White House, no one is paying much attention.

As an American Democrat who’s been miserable for a decade because his countrymen elected Republicans, I’ll suggest Mr. Webb take these papers and shove them up his nether regions

We pay this disgusting fascist propagandist a quarter of a million quid a year to spout his crap on the Today programme. Meanwhile the BBC is firing decent journalists and closing channels.

I just don't get how he is allowed to comment when well we saw what Lineker had to do and basically resign and then Webb does this nonsense ?? one rule ??

Webb says his D friends relieved at Trump 2024 win "Even Democrat-supporting friends of mine in the city seemed somehow relieved. Their own party would get a kick up the backside and if Trump could end illegal immigration, reduce inflation and combat woke universities, hey, maybe it's not all bad?"

And did he? Killed US citizens in so doing, inflation like nothing else, universities still hold free expression. Is Webb holding onto past bullshit in the face of reality?

The piece does explain loss of Latino support (violent mass deportations are unpopular) and rural disillusion (inflation, gas) "True he has effectively closed the border but he followed it up with an unpopular and occasionally violent crackdown on immigrants living blameless lives inside the US".

They...don't sound very Democrat supporting. Do we think it was someone at a dinner party and Webb fell for the "I'm saying this as a Democrat supporter" before repeating Republican talking points?

"I'm a long time Tory supporter but even I recognise that the capitalist system is broken, we need to tax billionaires to pay for free university education, and Polanski seems to be the only politician who gets it"

I don’t think it’s good journalistic practice to right about the opinions of your friends as if they were universal truths. Especially friends as srange and confused as his seem to be.

Sadly Webb has always been a Trump apologist amd so I’m surprised he has any Democrat friends. There was plenty wrong with the Democratic administration and pitch to the voters but the future of American democracy is a big price to pay. Maybe Webb would feel more comfortable with GBN.

Yeah, OK Justin. Maybe the people of the United States would prefer that someone removed the regime that is rounding people up and putting them in camps, shooting people in the street and stealing public money to enrich themselves and their friends. They certainly won’t be better off losing this one

One wonders if Trump will soon call Justin Webb as a prosecution witness in Trump's lawsuit against Webb's employer the BBC, such is Webb's latter day sycophancy.
