NEVER list something as free, ALWAYS put a nominal cost on it, unless you want to talk to all of the most insane people on the internet

giving stuff away on Facebook marketplace and buy nothing groups is such a wiiiild experience. The amount of labor and communication people need to come grab a like, free plant or end table is unreal

In my experience it's quite the opposite. There is no haggle, no complaints, nothing. Can't make it any cheaper can I? Also lots of people feel uneasy accepting something for free and would bring like a pumpkin, chocolate or some eggs from their garden in exchange. Pretty nice experience

> unless you want to talk to all of the most insane people on the internet Isn't half the point of the internet that we have the privilege to interact with the most insane people on the internet?

Also, pricing the stuff means to explain people why don’t you want to put an automatic 50% off discount just so they reached out to you.

Once had a woman say I was compounding her grief because a plastic bird bath I listed for free after moving into our house had gone already 🫠

I once put one of those ancient TV/DVD combo things on the street in London. Realised I'd forgotten the remote. Went and got it from the house and walked back outside to find that it had already been taken.

This was a lesson I got told in my teenage job - we could have offered some classes for free but the boss was adamant that people only care if they have paid a bit.

I once had a series of chancers - including one person who wanted me to deliver to frigging Carstairs (from Calgary) - message me about an office chair I was giving away. I relisted it for $10, a guy came to pick it up and I just told him to take it because I was glad he didn't fuck me about.

that said, I recently sold a desk top. the guy said he'd be there at 2:13pm, and not only was he bang on time, he gave me the $20 without haggling!

hey i can talk to the most insane people on the internet right here on bsky dot app (laudatory and pejorative both, sometiems in the same person/post) (i would never give things away just because i would never interact with others that much i would find a way to avoid the need altogether)
