It must be galling to people working in sweets development that the pioneers of chocolate bars basically got it bang on with their first gos.

I must thank @youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com for being so enthused about the De Gaulle film meaning i got off my arse to actually see it. Glorious, just glorious. Am not obviously a war film fan but this managed to be both funny and tremendously moving. The entire Bir Hakeim section? Incredible.

This has inspired me to seek and book (only part 1 for now). I am v much ready for a rush of French patriotic emotion.

I don't remember it being as good as this.

Let’s have another look at the time Nigel Farage went to the US to bad mouth Britain, but ended up getting his arse handed to him by the US Senate.

Very interested to see the UK version of this. Wild to discover that drinking 1 drink a week puts you amongst only 30% Americans.

No helpful comments but just to say I also did my radiators this weekend and it is probably my favourite house job?

Marie Le Conte@youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com

alright fellow mascs just bled my radiators, which predictably led to a drop in water pressure, and usually know how to bring the pressure back up but turns out my boiler situation here is, huh, unobvious - do we think these are the two bits I need to open to bring the pressure back up?

Movie posters that could only be put up in British railway stations, one of a series of probably one.

Honestly given this and the photo of the Physics guy, if I ever won a Nobel Prize I would absolutely not want someone taking a photo of me. For various reasons.

Just in! New Nobel Prize laureate in literature Anne Carson stands surprised in her kitchen in Reykjavík, Iceland. Stay tuned for our exclusive interview with her coming soon. Join us in congratulating our 2026 literature laureate - send your greetings in the comments.

I also think a byproduct of this would be better retention - most teachers love their subject and time spent working on that (meaningfully) is time well spent. I have been teaching a new spec this year - new texts and AOs. Pretty much all my work for it has been done at weekends or on holidays.

10/10 What would teaching look like if we genuinely organised it as a mature, learned profession? With protected space for teachers to think, learn & deepen their craft. Not take teachers away from classrooms, but make them better equipped for what happens when they return.

My OH however works in an industry where time is built into the day for courses, classes, in house lectures. He finds it astonishing that we're expected to do all that *outside* our working hours.

8/10 If we believe this, time becomes an uncomfortable question. Professional learning can't perpetually live in INSET days, twilight sessions & whatever remains. Protected professional learning isn't asking teachers to work more. It may require schools to deliberate on what we should do less of.

The extent of the PISA gap between England and other western European countries in particular is extraordinary In reading, the 25% most disadvantaged young people in England outperformed the average for all students in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway and many other countries

It's just weird isn't it when the British Museum is running a sold-out exhibition, when The Odyssey reports $1billion at the box office, when the V&A has just opened the most innovative and accessible museum model in Europe....and this is what our minister for research comes out with.

Margot Finn@eicathomefinn.bsky.social

A cheery message from the new minister responsible for research funding for the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences (and the subjects that the majority of UK taught undergraduate and Masters students study).

This day our cook maid (we having no luck in maids now-adays), which was likely to prove a good servant, though none of the best cooks, fell sick and is gone to her friends, having been with us but 4 days.

One reason England does so well is our second generation immigrants outperform their peers which is not true in most OECD countries. We are also very good at integration. And it's v sad that this is never acknowledge in debates on immigration.

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

New PISA data out England is now top ten in all three areas (reading, maths, science) and the second highest performing country outside of east Asia (after Estonia). This is a huge public policy success.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

Once again, the biggest problem with violent far right thugs making our streets dangerous is not that they might not vote Labour.

So many juvenile ideas about what rebellion & revolution are. Dolly put money & time into things that helped people she might never meet. She gave of herself musically AND made her fame a vehicle for generosity. Sincere, unswerving, true charity. Only revolutionary because too few w/ power try it.

I understand why students do this but as a HOD English it's so depressing.

Ben Zaranko@benzaranko.bsky.social

Students are increasingly shifting towards university subjects with higher financial returns (economics, maths, law) and away from degrees that don’t pay (English, philosophy, performing arts). The same trend is evident in A-level entries. Students have become more discerning. A thread... 🧵

Something tells me that universities won't be blamed for high graduate unemployment in the way we are blaming schools for NEETs...

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall.com

This will be a national crisis- adding to the profound generational inequities which already bedevil Britain. Working class kids have long not had the support they needed as the mass employment industrial world disappeared. Will we repeat the mistake with graduates? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
