since I seem to occasionally post things that other people see I figure I should write a pinned post. I'm a 40-something professional nerd who has Thoughts on things, some better than others. I live in Calgary, Alberta with my wife and two cats, but I'm originally from the UK.

WHO INVENTED NUMBERS MOTHERFUCKER??!?

I've been meaning to get around to posting the full details, so what the hell - why not get it out while it's still Vuln Week: Anthropic's mech interp driven security model is built on a fundamentally incorrect assumptions. Let's dive in, starting with this paper: www.anthropic.com/research/nex...

About a year ago, I got really into making glitch art exploring the edge cases & failure modes of machine cognition. This had some unexpected applications. Here’s the result: recursion.wtf/posts/claude... I've shared the relevant logs & artifacts with Anthropic, and the matter is under review.

It's not just advertising: if I use AI assistance, I'd rather disclose than not, because I want people to be aware that it was not entirely my own work, even if I have checked it over myself. People have a right to know whether they're interacting with an unassisted human, a centaur, or a machine.

good fucking lord. "less impressed by self-awareness" buddy I think you need to look in the mirror.

it's unfortunate that a lot of arguments imported from the US are being rehashed in the replies here, because it's going to drown out the actual ways in which Calgary can make sure we're not getting stiffed.

Jeromy Farkas@jeromyyyc.bsky.social

Calgary, what are your views on large AI data centres? In the coming weeks, City Council will begin discussing rules for future large-scale data centre applications. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the opportunities, concerns and what we should consider as we move forward.

"municipal leaders don't care about our thoughts" *municipal leaders ask the public for their thoughts, get yelled at* sigh.

Jeromy Farkas@jeromyyyc.bsky.social

No need to jump into personal attacks. I'm asking for people's thoughts.

"people should be vaccinated as recommended and they should be encouraged to do so, and I personally think people are stupid if they don't" and "I don't think governments should force vaccinations on people" are not mutually exclusive opinions to hold.

surely with everything going on right now we can see that giving governments any more power over people isn't ideal... right?

I don't give a fuck if this is unpopular and I will die on this hill (and risk the resulting "gottem!"s that will come my way).

how all of these conversations would actually go

Philip Bump@pbump.com

Even if this were viable as a concept (that there's an afterlife; that it allows conversations with others; that enslavers are going the same place as you), who cares? Oh, are you mad at me, Ben Franklin? Tough shit.

not only was the referendum stupid, I'm annoyed that I had to waste my time indicating it was stupid with my votes.

saying hello to our son _and_ seeing the separatists get their asses handed to them? today was a good day.

ladies and gentlemen, our dipshit premier.

Danielle Smith: "Just look at the Liberals under Justin Trudeau. They had a near-death experience in December 2024, and then they woke up and said, 'Oh, gee, we better steal all of Pierre Poilievre's policies, otherwise we're not going to get reelected.'"

don't get me wrong I have my criticisms of Carney but fuck me sideways if you think the LPC is currently enacting the same policies as the CPC would have done had Poilievre won.

"next time around" fuck off you grifting twat.

Jeffrey Rath: "Next time around, we'll have a leader that believes in independence in charge of the UCP. We'll see how it goes when there isn't a premier in office that's rigging the outcome of the referendum."

absolutely bat-shit insane brain-cooking going on. folks, I'm begging you to realise that datacentres have been a thing longer than most of us have been alive, and that they host many things including critical infrastructure. if you fuck with them, you WILL get a free ticket to "find out".

Good. Don't turn over 911 services to people desperate to turn your backyard into a CSAM generator. You shouldn't have in the first place but maybe this will teach you not to do it again.

Yes, because a lot of “leftists” are kids from right wing households, who realized they held a left-coded core position (usually lgbtq rights), but have never rethought any of what Fox News told them about liberals.

realryanwhorton.bsky.social@realryanwhorton.bsky.social

They use liberal the same way Glenn Beck and all the 00s Fox News guys used liberal in the 90s to early 00s. Big damn red flag for me frankly

I don't particularly give a shit about robots - they're robots - but I think doing this kind of thing says more about you than you might realise.
