Talarico on trans athletes: “I’m always going to stand up to politicians who bully kids to score political points. My faith teaches me that every child is made in the image of God…I’ll always fight to make sure our student athletes and every sport is safe and fair. Those are not mutually exclusive.”

"My faith " There is something infantile in the presumption that somebody else has a responsibility to give your life meaning and point The truly adult view, by contrast, is that our life is as meaningful, as full and as wonderful as we choose to make it.

Don’t give a toss about his faith. Prefer not to know if he had any at all. It has no bearing on the ability to do the job for which he is interviewing. I hate it.

I've always felt that the various governing boards of specific sports all deal with this issue appropriately and compassionately, heavy on the science, and light on the toxic judgement of people without basic knowledge of the issue. I hope we find our way back to sanity.

This is the only answer. Using the same standards for wrestling, track & field, basketball, softball, baseball, target shooting, weightlifting, etc... makes no sense. Individual sports can handle our own eligibility.

They used to, but they have all been either ideologically captured (such as in the case of the IOC), or have capitulated to the Trump administration and banned trans athletes (such as the NCAA, and they will likely never unban them).

After the 2024 election, I wrote a series of emails to the DNC. I implored the DNC to effectively, and compassionately, deal with the Trans rights issue in a way that put that issue to bed. Unfortunately, the DNC refused to listen, and now every time a MAGAt opens their mouth they bash Trans people.

You’re stealing a joke from the Slap Chop guy? Lol Stealing bits is one thing, but stealing from an unfunny conservative woman beater? Lol perfect. So much for protecting women.

It wouldn’t matter, they don’t listen to us. Countless articles are published all the time talking about us but basically never to us.

Oh here we go, he's suddenly not progressive enough. He's not perfect. He's not 100% in alignment with the single issue that you care about, which is a non-issue for 99.999999% of Americans. You all are pathetic and are falling for the conservative issue trap yet again. For fuck's sake.

Hey, what’s more “falling to into the rights trap”? Standing up against their war on trans people or beginning to echo what the right says? Just say you want us gone. You fucking assholes always act like saying “hey, you changed your outlook, this sucks, you shouldn’t do that!” is purity testing.

In case anyone was wondering fairness in children's sports was never addressed in the Bible. Using it to shield from his own bigotry

We are all made in God’s image, be we trans or cis, queer or heterosexual. Every color, every creed, every exceptionality is of Him. To deny the truth of trans existence is to deny God. So many, in their arrogance, have allowed hate to replace the love of Christ. The flock is more wolf than sheep.

This is not the courageous and moral answer I hoped for from Talarico. Protecting kids means understanding risk. Trans kids are demonstrably at enormously higher risk. Protect them.

Imagine if he talked about gay kids like this... or Black kids... "I only want them in sports if it's safe.." That's such an obvious dog whistle answer.. the premise of it is that some trans people aren't safe.. He's trying to rationalize segregation.

Hope he wins the election so trans kids will be treated equally and fairly instead of if Paxton wins and they are treated like the spawn of the devil.

I hope you grow the rest of your brain and one day it takes more than a smile and a nod to trick your stupid ass. The options in TX are a Klansman in a hood and a Klansman who lies and pretends to be a good guy... You support the one without his hood on... I support neither. Have a nice day.

Some aren't. Depends on the age of course, but it was common and is widely accepted in trans circles that trans women and older girls should only compete after some time on HRT (or blockers for younger kids) A high school senior who's just started transition shouldn't go straight onto the girls team

You are intentionally conflating things being overly fair and things being safe. If a big tall strong girl transffered from another school it'd be the exact same level of safety Trans people do that so cis people won't hang us in trees. That's the actual reason.. use your brain.

It's not "trans people do that" though, it's that there's a good deal of evidence that male puberty confers real physical advantages that almost entirely go away with hormonal transition. That's why those rules exist.

It isn’t though. I had to come into the comments to even understand what the hell he’s saying. I wish people would just say what they mean. 1) I think kids should play sports if they want to. 2) I think some kids shouldn’t be allowed to play sports.

No, Republican-lite bigotry and dipshits like you who are indifferent to it are why Democrats lose (and are HATED by those they should be fighting to protect). You’re a spineless coward and everyone sees it but you.

And believe it our not, you’ve made my point too. Good job! You’ve stuck your nose into topics you know little to no nothing about, pretended to be an authority over people who know more and then made yourself a victim. Just like every other cis dude does.

yet you don't say what is wishy washy. hell my son due to medical reasons was on growth hormones and steroids which would have disqualified him from a number of sports, is that bigotry? I am fine with that and you almost certainly never gave that a thought at all.

If by “didnt say it how I wanted” you mean “didn’t make it clear exactly what he meant” then yes, that’s true. There is no literacy issue here. Talarico is being deliberately vague and using “safety and fairness” as a transphobic dogwhistle.

That is NOT the point of this post. I found this answer unclear and wishy washy. Disappointing. If you cannot see that, I cannot help you.

For what, saying he’ll protect trans kids and doing nothing in the face of our rights being stripped away? No. He’s worse, he’s decided “maybe I should skew anti trans!”

For reference: ALL the anti-Talarico ads here in Texas attack his support for trans kids and the LGBTQ community. Meanwhile, Paxton denies trans people exist or have any rights whatsoever, and brags about all he’s done to marginalize LGBTQ Texans.

The Right has become bereft of any actual socio-economic-political policies, as evidenced by EVERY discussion with a liberal rapidly descending to “what is a woman?” and/or “what’s your position on men in women’s sports?” And when did MAGA become so invested in “protecting” women?

Image of god needs some data. 5’2” blue eyes redhead or 7’3” dark brown hair. Can live in the hard vacuum of space or the great depth of oceans. Voice like Sheri Lewis or James Earl Jones.

I remember in Junior Highschool in Central Texas, we had a masc girl that played Center for the 7th & 8th grade boys fb team. Nobody inspected their genitals, or made a fuss about it. Everybody thought it was cool that they could hold their own in a full contact sport in such a competitive state.

Perhaps all publicly funded sports should be coed. If people want their kids to compete in same sex leagues, then they can organize and fund it on their own.

oh for fucks sake. Sports are inherently unfair. If your 6ft 3 then you have an unfair advantage over someone who's 5ft 3. Trans kids do not have some inexcusable unfairness in sports! it's literally just culture war wedge issue and I'm sick of it.

You might want to read about the history of women’s sports, too. If you’re getting into reading and all. (Hint, they weren’t fought for by feminists, but imposed on women when they beat men at their own game)

If the sport had separate divisions based on height (like how wrestling has weight classes), you would be right. We do not have basketball leagues based on height. I agree that it is just a culture wedge issue, and that there is not an advantage, but your argument is nonsense and hurts our case.

A major improvement over his last horrific response. But still leaves MUCH to be desired. And his position on wanting to ban healthcare for trans minors is a non-starter.

Paxton would be bad for trans people in the short term. Talarico, at least according to his last interview (this is an improvement) would be worse for Dems in the long term, as he would vote with republicans, *and* is facilitating the “labourification” of the Dem party, which would be catastrophic

It is the choice. No one here with a brain will vote Paxton as he’s awful all around. But Talarico positioned himself as THE progressive, inclusive choice then pivoted to this bigoted position recently. Red flag for me. Will we have a Fetterman on our hands?

Fetterman, the guy who progressives pushed after concerns were raised about his history of chasing Black men with a shotgun? Because the ‘normie lib’ was too much to swallow? Meanwhile Talarico is… against bottom surgery for minors. Which isn’t a thing anyways. What is the issue again?

It’s not that much of a pivot, though. He was saying this in January. His position on sports is in line with what my circle of Austin liberal friends have been saying for some time. Demanding ideological purity on an issue that impacts less than 1 percent of the population is a fools errand.
