Hey! So, on top of emailing/calling Discord to tell them why this is bad, I recommend canceling nitro as soon as March hits (or sooner!) AND sending physical letters if possible! Chances are, they'll try to make it harder to call and email them! And try to get bigger voices talking about it, too!

I've had my Discord account since 2016, I could've been 9 years old and still be over 18, did they put any thought into this?

First they start that AI bullshit and piss off the moment they realize we're not in for that ride. Now this. It's almost like they want their own platform to die.

upside is that having it lets you cancel it, which is what they track - if you never get it in the first place, you are mostly irrelevant as far as profit stats go (not like that's a bad thing)

Every company thinks they're this once-in-a-lifetime unicorn that can repeat the mistakes of all their predecessors but somehow be the only one to away with them. With the rise of open source options + rising public anger with surveillance tech, they don't realize how replaceable they are.

I'm genuinely thinking this is a saber rattle of yet another tech company trying to get grift capital, in this case by throwing their lot in with surveillance data freaks In a wide range of areas this won't fly so the bigger question is who shows up to break ankles & become a widespread replacement

I think mentioning fascism here feels out of place. It could be replaced with something that doesn’t shift the discussion into politics, but instead keeps the focus on safety and privacy, imo

Everybody should be asking Discord what they have done since last year to protect this information that they weren't doing last year. And when you realize they have no plan, that they are serving their users up for an exponentially larger breach, stop giving them money.

No? How would the data of "this user is 18+" go to the servers to change the flag so that you can access it again or how would you open discord in general? it doesn't work without internet at all.

the statement says the selfies or id never leave the device which aside from being a lie also implies that you could do it without internet but yeah now that youve pointed that out even if they didnt send personal information out they would still need to send out the thing to change you to verified

if I had to guess how it works: - they send through the internet some program able to process the video - the video gets locally process and probably a lot of anstract data gets saved - that data is send over to confirm your age -the server unlocks the 18+ rights maybe though manual action of a dev

Oh it gets even better. I tried to email them, since the online form is broken/disabled, and of course they say the don't monitor their email anymore and direct me to THE NON-EXISTENT FORM.

Whats the best alternative here? I don't feel like Ventrilo is going to replace my group chat and Revolt is not in a finished state. That being said Revolt needs more open source contributors!

"behavioral signals like signs of working hours" That's nonsense. What distinguishes someone working irregular shifts? School hours? Part-time work? Time zones? It's just sprinkling meaningless sugar on a turd in an effort to make it more palatable.

Shit man, I have 12h shifts at a dead car dealership. I be on discord calls watching my friends game while I’m at work 😂😂😂

I know a few companies that USE Discord for work, so is being online during work hours a red flag? Or is being away from my computer a red flag? When I worked in corporate software, I was on mobile Discord *during* work. There is too much variance in the human experience for metrics to assume.

2016, here. What, do they think I was 7 years old when I opened my account? They're going with "ID or face scan" because that's easy to farm out to another company, not because it's the best way to verify ages. (How many teens are we going to see using their parents' ID cards?)

It's actually a good thing because when you are doing illegal stuff on discord and get Banned from it, it's way harder to just create a new acc and do it anyway.

You SURE about that Discord? Cause people will drop you like a Hot Potato and not pick you back up because they'll find other means to chat online with folks that do not require proof of age (some people said they are going back to AIM or IRC if this actually goes though)

Unless "other ways to bring users back" includes "actually we'll use age verification that doesn't involve legal ID," then no. (My AO3 account is 17 years old. Why can't I use that for age verification? It's at least as valid as "let me show you an ID card that I promise is mine, really for true.")

Matrix *home*servers (which actually let people use it and build channels on it) do but there are many options including matrix.org, the "official" homeserver. There are also many options for you to pick from if you don't wanna deal w/ them

Discord is actually LESS useful than some of the old tools anyway. Was in a raid group for a game recently and we were all bemoaning being unable to do something that was very easy in Teamspeak. (RIP Teamspeak.)

Discord managed to overshadow Slack by offering easy video chat & a single account across servers. However, Slack now has video chat & streaming. (It lacks a few other features Discord has, esp for free accounts. But it'll definitely work for "friends chat group" servers.)

slightly less easily, tbh, because discord has positioned itself not just as a chat service but as a sort of quasi-forum replacement. think about how many things that would have been a forum or even a wiki are now contained entirely on discord servers.

Personally, my biggest concern is that it might make downloading some mods a little harder, since I know a few game mods who put their new releases exclusively on Discord. So if those servers get marked as "mature", which will probably be fairly arbitrary, let's be honest, that could be an issue.

Which is a thing that a few communities have been warning against for a while. Where once knowledge was accessible on some community or hobby forum, on a webpage anyone can access, now you gotta join and shovel through a discord server. Hopefully this is a wakeup call that shows some new migration.

Very empty treat seeing as no one ever stopped using it and moving to a different platform throughout these many years of the client getting worse with each update. Full of pop up spam ads and taking way too many resources.

Maybe we'll see a return to old-school forums. Many have lamented the fact that Discord is not indexable, despite being a common place for user support and troubleshooting.

It cannot be replaced easily. The number of communities where all of their information, resources, and data are housed solely on a discord is many, and it will not be a simple task to preserve/archive/transport those communities. So much information is held in servers. This is a big problem!

This, sadly. Also there are some of us who use bots for accessibility issues (for us, it's PluralKit) that don't/haven't/can't just switch over to another platform. For the "average" user without those issues and no complex communities to speak of, sure, maybe it's easy. That's not everyone though.

Notice how they aren't even asking for credit card details anymore? It's so clear they just want face and id data for privacy invasion. Also remember how long they let NSFW cub art on discord because they were into it and then pinned it on one person and kicked them off and pretended it was fixed?

Discord seems to think I'm not a veteran of hopping platforms. I'm a god damn grand fucking master of navigating enshittification by now. My Trust Thermocline is *very* shallowly located these days.

it's also a centralized platform which is prone to government pressure like Discord and others. We need to use decentralized platforms such as Matrix or XMPP to prevent this type of thing from happening again

Hell to the No!!! This is the worst thing right now and also something discord is not great at keeping (private information that was leaked while back). I would move to a more safe place that’s better than discord if they do this.

“Hi, we asked for your opinions on a survey and we’re going to do the exact opposite from your suggestions/concerns.”

It's more like "We have already made up our minds and nothing you say will ever change anything, but we would like you to fill up the form because we are 110% certain that you are okay with this and we love to feel validated."

Well, if this goes through, I suppose that's one more subscription I will drop and look for a replacement. I really miss the old days, when you could just USE a program to do what the program was DESIGNED to do.

Aww, I was a little disappointed Discord didn't have a "reason for leaving" field on their Nitro cancellation page. Of course, by now, I think they can probably guess the reason for all these.

yeah no, if I got to cheat my way around the teen settings then I will. I do not trust anyone with my private personal info despite the fact they should already know Im well over 18. parents should supervise their children, the internet is not responsible.

I thought it was local laws like Australia's or Britain's recent internet laws that Discord wants to add to their platform worldwide, not credit card companies. Although I get what you mean.

maybe selectively for a handful but idk it doesn't seem to have worked as an en masse rule shift, every day the trending tab looks like this it's really funny

They literally don't have a choice. The options were either stop accepting credit/debit cards, or remove the mature content.

AFAIK it's worse than that, recent legislation in some US States and the UK means they could actually be sued for NOT doing this. So yeah it's a pain in the ass but we should be getting mad at the legislators that have demanded these changes, not the companies forced to comply

Nah just get your communities to set up on an alternative. Discord will lose fuckloads of profit and then we can point to it as an example the next time a company wants to fuck around

It's actually a good thing because when you are doing illegal stuff on discord and get Banned from it, it's way harder to just create a new acc and do it anyway.

you know.. wild guess but i think its a good idea to get rid the UK of globalist to prevent stuff like this happening in the future

Im vaguely curious if this is discord just deciding to become worse for the fun of it, or if its a direct result of the usa turning fascist and them having been ordered to collect as much data as possible

Personally, I think that less than six months from your last major ID-related data breach is a perfect time to start requiring IDs across the board.
