This is who Portland Police have always been. Except nowadays they don’t need possums, because they have weapons of war to abuse citizens with.

1981 / 1986 News@40yearsago.bsky.social

[March 12th, 1981] Portland police officers dumped dead possums in front of the Burger Barn, a popular Black-owned restaurant. This racially motivated act sparked intense civil rights protests, significant political fallout, and lasting community outrage in Portland, Oregon.

This Thursday, October 29, Portland City Councilors @councilorkanal.bsky.social and @counciloravalos.bsky.social are proposing an ordinance to limit the use of chemical weapons, like tear gas, in Portland. Check out this thread to learn more and take action. ⬇️

If you don’t let us use chemical weapons on Portlanders, we’ll be forced to use batons, tasers, and guns. Also, let us police ourselves… trrruuust uuusss.

Portland, OR is where the bird landed and gave Bernie the nickname Birdie Sanders. I saw him at a rally here on the Washington side of the Columbia River. The venue was so packed that he spoke about 30 minutes, unscheduled & unplanned to all US folkes that couldn't get inside the high school gym ✌️❣️

Portland Police are basically arguing that if City Council doesn’t let them use chemical weapons against Portlanders, they’ll be forced to quell our constitutional rights using batons, tasers, and guns.

16th isn't among the best but not the worst either. Many states should do better for their schools but most money ends up in salaries without much left over to help kids. OR has a shit Edu program because of terrible leadership in the Portland public school system.

Journey Church is definitely a white-centric MAGA church. Here the pastor claims to speak for Arab people who live in Israel. He also seems to think the history of people in the Americans started when the white people founded the USA. He's a white-centric revisionist.

It is wild to me that pro data center ads are being run on TV here in the Portland area. Nothing political just a 'set the record straight' type ads.

We need to pause this process – not one school should close before we fully explore our options to fully fund education. My office will do everything in its power to help. We need to retain and attract young families to Portland, and we can start by saving our schools. (1/2)

Hell yeah! Translating into terms creepy old men will understand: school closures will sabotage Portland’s ✨renaissance✨. Every gear of our local government should be aimed at growing Portland and making our governance structure support that growth - from schools to tax systems. Go, Mitch, go!

Councilor Mitch Green@councilorgreen.bsky.social

Over the last several days I've heard directly from parents who are scared and outraged about the PPS proposals for closure of their schools. They are calling for action from their elected officials at all levels. Today I have filed an emergency that responds to the urgency of these calls. 🧵

That's why I pushed for Keep Portland Housed and why our Unified Housing Strategy prioritizes preserving homes as we build more. Stagnant wages, healthcare costs and frayed safety nets affect mental health. Those pressures show up in our buildings, where residents need more support, not less.

John E Bartley, III K7AAY (D) NSSAR📎▼🐸 reposted

It's complicated. But these aren't just Home Forward problems. Our affordable housing system is under enormous pressure from federal funding changes, skyrocketing construction costs and the simple reality that everyday Portlanders cannot afford the rent. We cannot afford to lose the housing we have.

Cloven Boy@shopclovenboy.bsky.social

So what happens next with this? Or does the city just not directly have power to be involved? Sorry tagging you on this @candaceavalos.bsky.social but I’ve been following your committee meetings to get more informed and you know your shit. #AvalosForMayor www.wweek.com/news/city/20...

So-called “inclusionary zoning” is an attempt to outsource a key state responsibility—providing subsidized housing to poor people—to private for-profit actors so the state does not have to raise and spend tax money. It is profoundly neoliberal policy.

Novium@novium.bsky.social

It is also weird how ardently this incredibly neoliberal model is championed by otherwise leftist activists

Yes. The conservative scheme for education is a three-way split: high-priced academies for the children of the wealthy, religious instruction to brainwash the middle class, and a rump of prison-like public schools to discipline the lower class into obedience.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.
