www.sortiraparis.com/en/news/in-p... Philippe Jaenada’s book is a triumph. So hoping he wins, not least because the artist we collect, Lancelot Ney, has quite a prominent role in the 1949 cold case story of model Lise Cansot. H/t too to the splendid Luc Corlouër for his parallel book on Cansot.

I’ve been writing about ancient calendars and star maps. Then last night I walked the dog at dusk and as I got home, looked up to see a myriad satellites dashing across the dome of stars. So many of them! We’ve changed our view of the heavens so much. Are we now culturally trapped by technology?

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

The lock on the door that gives access to the organ at King's College Chapel, Cambridge looked very surprised that I noticed it. Found on the screen erected between 1532-36 by Henry VIII to celebrate his marriage to Anne Boleyn. #IronworkThursday

The hollowing out a priceless national asset, under a techbro vandal. As with higher education, this type of move might be tolerable if there was *any government policy at all* on what the ultimate plan is. But there isn't.

BBC News is a good example of big cuts still to come. Today, it has told staff of 100 more job losses, saving £5.5m. That's on top of previous cuts of £25m and £1.8m. But it has to get to a total of £51m in cuts - so still plenty to come next year.

Really quite struck by how piss-poor the UK coverage has been of the French riots, particularly from commentators. Superficial, know-nothing, self-interested, utterly unrevealing. An emabrrassment.

Strange to recall that in 1968 William Rees-Mogg’s Times led the way in denouncing Powell and sentiments exactly like this. What a disgraceful moral decline

Limoges city hall is now collapsing as the fire blazes through it. It’s an historic monument, constructed between 1879 and 1883. This is what it used to look like:

J’ai rencontré Philippe Jaenada au Bistro Lafayette, son QG. Heureux de rencontrer cet auteur, dont la prose sait si bien m’embarquer, pour écrire son portrait. A British consultant wins a contract with a German company. Good news for British exports. But travelling there to deliver the work may now involve work-permit restrictions. Brexit didn't just change how we trade goods. It changed how British people sell their expertise.
