I've started doing something similar for fun. In this paper with a vector image I embedding a picture of my son with a balloon. It's faint but if you zoom in you can see it (you have to download the PDF). It's open access though. doi.org/10.1007/s110...

For a cancelled game I worked on, I hid little illustrations of Danny Devito in a couple of textures, which made or programming lead angry for bloating valuable file space. But I figured that would be a way for me to know if I ever saw my textures elsewhere (plus, it’s funny).

Capital gains should be taxed when the assets are monetize, whether that's via sale or via loan

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

And Lindsey Graham should be remembered as someone who, on his very best day, was a sniveling coward with a moral compass that pointed only to power.

Hey @proptermalone.bsky.social did you folks discuss this guy on the podcast?

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.

It's obviously dumb to apply how-to-win-elections logic to non-candidates who are reacting out of moral outrage. But standing by this position is essential because if Matt acknowledges that his ability to predict what makes candidates successful is wrong, it kneecaps his entire approach.

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

If you were to take everything that was wrong about the democratic party, distill it down to its essence, and pour it into a human shaped mold, it would look like Matt Yglesias when you cracked it open.

It's a choice (a bad one) to tell readers this driver "passed too close to cyclists" when there's video evidence showing he drove his car into them, made contact and hurt someone. Fellow journalists: we can explore the nuances of punishment for drivers without obfuscating their dangerous behavior.

People even if you think AGI will create treatments or cures for different kinds of cancer, please do not start smoking. Even if those treatments are created they will likely suck. I'm not saying they wont work but they will likely be painful, have many side effects, and wreck your body.

Language barriers and national cultures are important, but they look tiny next to the deep cultural divide that separates LaTeX users from normal humans.

It is amazing that essentially 100% of the responses to this are lawyers saying “because renumbering is hard”. That is both true (Word sucks; human search and replace is very fallible) and an extremely, extremely solved problem here in the year 2026.

I must confess that when I'm walking down the sidewalk where I live I often encounter people speeding down the sidewalk on ebikes and electric scooters. I have yet to encounter someone on and ATV. I think we lack social norms about where and how these bike and scooters should be used.

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

It's fascinating to learn how many more kids die in ATV accidents every year than in e-bike accidents, then observing that there is a moral panic about kids riding e-bikes but not about kids riding ATVs.

In general everything is a struggle. And if we give up on our side then the other side will make progress. Or more progress. Just because you have lost something doesn't mean you should concede defeat. You have to keep up the struggle. And you must do so assuming the other side will as well.

you can’t really rebuild the same thing in terms of diminished state capacity but it’s not a monotonous decline, you can build something else that does a similar thing or the same thing and it can do it better whether or not we specifically are capable of that in a few years, tbd

This may sound good theoretically. But if my kids school wants to start at 9 instead of 8 then the employers of the parents for every kid who goes to that school also must change when their employees have to come to work. Then the people who deal with those companies also have to shift.

Another reason publishers may want your email is AI scraping. From listening to the @404media.co podcast. They ask folks to get email links for their free reporting because it was the only way to stop the AI companies from scraping their content because these companies do understand consent.

Local inference (running LLMs on your local machine) is getting pretty cheap and it works really well. We will eventually be able to run open weights models (models that have been trained on the frontier models and have comparable abilities) in our house. They may not be the best..

Josh Marshall@joshtpm.bsky.social

These sound like non-trivial problems.

But they are pretty damn good. Hardware is expensive now, but in a couple years when you can run basically Opus or Sol in your house, it will be difficult for Anthropic or Open AI to compete with that. It's like the frontier labs didn't plan for or even consider commodification of their products.

I feel like this describes all the folks in the IDW and associated secular gurus.

The average rationalist is in awe of the idea of intelligence, wants to be around it, wants to attach themselves to the prestige and feeling of it. They want to legitimize themselves via association and involvement. This is not a movement of born iconoclasts or autonomous high-agency individuals.

"The purpose of SlutCon is to help men who are scared of women to start liking women, by putting them in proximity of women who likemen and aren't scared of men." Isn't the bullshit of this statement kind of betrayed by calling it SlutCon?

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

The bizarre culture that’s sprung up around Silicon Valley AI companies - which overlaps hugely with rationalist and effective altruist circles - appears to be seriously pressuring some women into attending sex parties for the sake of networking. This is, needless to say, horrifying.
