Just released: a new Nobel Prize lesson to share with your students. It's a deep dive into the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, which turned a giant block of ice in the south pole into a detector for mysterious particles from space. Use the Nobel Prize lesson in the classroom: https://bit.ly/4sB3oDp

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

gotta say hats off to all the writers pretending to do profiles of Silicon Valley CEOs just so they can add that one same paragraph, every single time, that demonstrates they're all insane freaks who do not know or like their own kids.

cool, cool

Best book review I’ve read in quite some time. I do not want to pay money for this book

Sometimes it just dawns on me how deeply weird and wild this situation is. A company making a crappy, unchecked and badly designed product, but thanks to pre-existing science fiction narratives they can aggressively tout their own failures and inadequacies as reasons for self-regulation

I can understand people considering one of the biggest beefs with the tech industry being that they’ve spent billions on building & running chatbots to make mediocre PowerPoint presentations for your marketing dept meeting so there’s no money left over for mecha manufacturing

you know this admin is so dumb and doubled-down on war that I think someone who was sufficiently motivated could get them to build us our first gundam

So I know most of you who follow me expect interesting insights about technology, science, politics, & philosophically cool stuff. But I’m pretty sure my pet lizard ate her own poop this afternoon while I was running errands & I’m a bit freaked out

I admit my culpability in this. When I see that Gizmo has laid down some cable, I usually wait until her heat lamp has dried it out before I clean it up because it’s poop & that’s gross. She’s never seemed to mind before & chill on top of one of her play structures

I didn’t think she was particular hungry still because she’d devoured a pretty big pile of lettuce & some chopped up apple earlier that morning. I’ve been hungry before when I go a while between meals. But what the hell?

This whole thread traces a disturbing story of one man whose ICE contract has deported about 10% of the population of his small town. He feels bad about it sometimes, apparently

So as I headed to Ingram for the first time in March, I wanted to know who the local faces of the national immigration crackdown were. Who was driving the black Dodge Charger? www.propublica.org/article/depo...

One thing I find really hard to deal with still is having found out, late in my Master’s degree, that a professor who was inspirational to my choice of study & career would hook up with a student every few years

I still can’t square the overall kindness of his personality & how inspiring he was to both male & female students, with his lifelong habit of periodic sexual predation

He died of cancer in his 60s shortly after I finished my doctorate & it was a genuinely tough mourning period for me because of our solid relationship. I can’t write him off as absolutely horrible but I can’t ignore the terrible things he did

As gross as the Amy Acton situation is, it's a brilliant demonstration of what I find most disgusting about the American extreme conservative: They think the will of the parent should always take precedence & control over the needs & happiness of their children. Even in sexual exploitation

This is why many American conservatives support "parents' rights," that a parent's power to control their children should be a right of those parents protected in law. I live in Canada, where every human rights law, including those of our constitution, say "No way!" rabble.ca/columnists/p...

rabble.caThere's no such thing as 'parents' rights'Parents have a right to raise their children in accordance with their own values, but they don't have the right to override their children’s own rights.

So when you wonder why some conservatives could think that a daughter who's encouraged her mother's hatred is worse than a mother who enabled her husband to rape her daughter, the reasoning becomes clear & horrifying. I can do whatever I want to my property bsky.app/profile/atru...

Q: Now that you know the backstory about Amy Acton and her stepfather and why she hasn't talked to her mom in so long -- her stepfather was indicted for rape -- do you change your mind about the ad? TRUMP: No. No. It's a mother speaking badly against Amy Acton. You don't know anything.

Having or endorsing an authoritarian parenting style most consistently predicts support for the MAGA or other far-right movement, more than religion, class, ethnicity, economic ideas

it's so obvious that every single tech motherfucker hates the fact that they actually have to have a product. their ideal business model is infinite investment money without having to care about silly little things like users.

Nash@radiodeadair.com

As a side note to all this "AI" horseshit, I really think Jensen Huang personally despises the gamers that Nvidia built their company on. You can see it in how he's treated by the financial press (they eat up every lie) and by tech reviewers (if you lie to them they never let it go, ever).

Read this whole thread about JK Rowling’s hideous yacht. A symbol & active gesture of malice & contempt for everyone

... an exercise in environmental vandalism. In a world plunged into climate crisis by fossil fuel consumption and oceans ravaged and polluted into death zones, Samsara is a middle finger raised to the rest of us. It says 'I'll do whatever I want and fuck you, your future and ...

A major point here is that so many companies spend enormous amounts of money making AI slop videos to manipulate & defraud vulnerable seniors & Meta is perfectly happy to sit back & take their cut

At a certain point, it might be easier to admit that you wrote an apologia for the world’s most destructive white supremacist and say you’re very sorry and you won’t do it again

This is literally what it means when we say "the government asked you not to believe your own eyes & ears." But Orwell's story was so over-the-top in its inspiration from Stalin that few would ever think about how it could happen in the West.

quick reminder that “die hard republican voters” are not the only voters that exist, and that the ohio GOP’s success over the last decade rests on winning conservative and moderate independents.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i don't think i've ever seen a campaign do a murder-suicide before (decent chance this drags down the entire GOP ticket in the state)

This is another example of the conservative refusal to admit that government can have a productive, helpful role in people's lives. In this case, it will likely cause terrible damage to American society & cost many people's actual lives

BREAKING: Trump's head of FEMA just told states to prepare to handle disasters on their own. The Trump admin's disaster chief told state officials they must increase their financial reserves and emergency capabilities to handle most disasters on their own — without federal help.

However much this may seem like a unique product of the Trump Administration, this decision for FEMA to abdicate its fundamental purpose is rooted in the same mentality that told Americans in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath, "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job"

With all the anti-aircraft & other weaponry he’s said he’s installing in the ballroom & plans to turn the new arch into a staging zone for drones & snipers, Kalshi should start accepting bets now on how long the siege will last
