Sources tell me Danielle Smith will force Edmonton to repeal its zoning bylaw. Smith's UCP loyalist friends in Edmonton Neighbourhoods United, whose agenda lost in the last election, asked for her help, just like she helped the separatists. Local democracy is dead.

Once again, for the politicians, business leaders, and journalists still actively posting on X/Twitter: why? You're using a platform that's owned by someone who's trying to break up your country. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

There it is. Elon Musk now advocating for Alberta separation. That should perhaps be one of the biggest reasons to vote to stay. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

Listening to UK talk radio this week, once again struck by the inchoate grievance of even mainstream right-wing Caller after caller who cannot name a single real problem, yet are overwhelmed by panic that the country has been taken from them and they are losing somehow

It’s slightly maddening to see people take a generationally charismatic politician in the most media-concentrated city in North America and say “anyone could replicate this!”. It’s like pointing to Taylor Swift and saying “See? It’s easy: you just have to write good songs!”

This post is unavailable.

“Tell them about it” is particularly galling, given how fragmented and dysfunctional our information ecosystem is. Municipal, provincial and federal governments in Canada can do things that help ordinary people, but almost nothing breaks through the social media bubbles of the average voter.

The new Canada West Foundation report on the costs of separation begins with a ritual recitation of grievances by none other than Ted Morton, in case you wondered whether the business community has figured out the role it unwittingly played (and plays) in advancing the separatist cause. 🧵

This isn't the first time the USA has placed 50% tariffs on Canada. In 1890, the USA's Tariff Act was touted as a way to build up American industry, but the true goal was forcing the annexation of Canada. It backfired and made Canada stronger. This is the story. 📸 LoC 🧵1/10

Folks are understandably taking @mattyglesias.bsky.social to task for the 'HR training' focus, but I am struck by the inability here to recognize an educational failure. It is *your* (/our) job to explain to those voters that the collapse of democracy *will* have a greater impact on their lives.

So much this. One can be opposed to what Israel is doing without being anti-semitic. We can quibble over whether Israel has engaged in genocide (I think it has). I don't think we can quibble over repeated war crimes at scale and with much repetition. 1/2

I am speaking for just myself here but I think one reason it is obvious that whatever I say here about the Israeli government isn’t motivated by anti-Semitism is clearly I’d feel this annoyed if Norway kept doing this

This is why I spent the last decade beating my head off my desk, trying to convince people that there is no way to please unpleasable right wing reactionaries. They don’t want to fix anything, they *don’t want to be happy*. They want to be very angry at people they hate and wish harm upon.

This graph shows two things, 1) obviously that the cameras reduced speeding, but 2) that the improvement kept getting better over time. Speeders tend to get one or two tickets and then learn and change their behaviour. This isn't a cash grab, it's an extremely useful intervention.

It's Jamie@sjamieit.bsky.social

The City of Ottawa posted the raw speed data from before and after Doug Ford banned speed cameras and the effect is so obvious it's not even necessary put a line marking when that happened. This chart shows the percentage of drivers going 15km/h or more over the posted limit.

Five alarm fire for democracy in Canada. Not just Alberta. The whole country. Not hyperbole. When we take away effective representation, we no longer have a real claim to being a liberal democracy. If Alberta gets away with this, other provinces will follow.

Today, Danielle Smith and the UCP caucus unveiled plans to rig the next election: A new motion indicates the UCP's plans to manipulate the election maps for the next election in their favour, and without any requirement to consult the public. This has never been done in Canadian history. /1

They are literally making it up as they go along. When they don't like the outcome, the Smith government rigs the process. It's a worrisome pattern for those who care about procedural fairness and institutional forebearance. You know, real conservatives.
